Is E3 Dying? | Electronic Entertainment Ennui

Live streaming technology has changed the way gamers around the globe perceive the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Gone are the days of scouring magazines for second-hand interpretations of the biggest and best reveals from the preeminent trade event in the gaming calender. Now, the most talented developers, most prolific publishers, and most powerful hardware manufacturers in the world are given the opportunity to connect with their audience on a first-hand basis, beaming their heaviest of hitters directly into the living rooms of the people buying their products.

It's rather telling then, that over the last few days, that very audience has taken to social networking sites in force to express their apathy, their disappointment, and occasionally their outrage at an annual event that is steadily shifting from a freight-train of digital euphoria to a rather more pedestrian rechurning of last year's reveals. Are the sunny streets of Los Angeles about to bear witness to the death of E3? Or can something be done to turn public opinion around and get the fading exhibition back on its feet?

Is it too late for E3?

E3 2012 Reactions | EA

It was strictly business for EA at their showcase. No frills, no surprises, and nothing new to particularly cheer for. Battlefield Premium had been blown wide open long before this week, Dead Space 3 and Criterion's efforts were known about well in advance, and the rest were simple reminders of existence through new trailers.

We were treated to half an hour of shooters that brought nothing more to the table than we'd seen a couple of months back at EA's showcase. Everything got dumbed down and breezed through speedily with only two things really worthy of note.

The first is more interesting due to what it might mean for a different publisher entirely. The capture of the UFC licence is a big one, particularly in the US, and with confirmation of THQ having laid off their UFC team, it's yet another indication of Brian Farrell's company ruthlessly streamlining.

The other was Dead Space 3, which looked both unfamiliar and distressingly like something we'd seen before. It was weird to see Isaac with a similarly dressed chum, odd to witness him stumbling around open spaces, and frankly the gameplay footage reminded me more of a Lost Planet-Mass Effect mashup than either of the two previous games in the series. What was with the careless bullet-spraying? Does Dead Space really need co-op? Why is Isaac fighting a thresher maw?

Dead Space was a fantastically focused slice of space-based horror. Its sequel upped the action, whilst still retaining moments that would relief one's bowels of their contents. But this? This looks like Visceral's Resident Evil 5, make of that what you will.

E3 2012 | On Location At…EA

In sharp contrast to Microsoft's slower start, the packed crowd in the Orpheum Theatre was absolutely buzzing. "Dead Space 3" were the words on everyone's lips (regardless of language, since I was sat next to a German outfit and Playboy Brazil), with Isaac's latest outing easily the most anticipated game of the presser. Whether this newfound verve stemmed from genuine excitement or an extra coffee/Gatorade quaffed in the poorly-managed queue wasn't entirely clear, but the intimate stalls hummed with myriad predictions, bets and the latest leaks.

Brilliantly, Plants vs Zombies got the biggest cheer during the opening montage, rivalling even the dapper Jonny R and his promises of a humble, celebrity-less convention. You sold us that blatant lie last year, John Boy... and we were ready for the 'Playmaker,' UFC President and pals this time around.

Our depraved Necromorphic lust was soon satisfied thanks to a showstopping trailer that brought the house down. Drop-in cooperative play was formally announced, quickly followed by an action-packed demo that eschewed horror for balls-out carnage and brotacular banter. It looked great, but more like Lost Planet than Event Horizon. Will fans dig on this new direction?

"Will EA sell Madden XP as microtransactions?" muttered all and sundry, though not so loud as the hulking quarterback could hear us.

Warfighter Demo Reminds Us That It Still Exists

Like so many of the spots in EA's press conference today,Medal of Honor: Warfighter's moment to shine seemed to be a time for treading water as much as anything else. A new trailer, some more gameplay footage, a fresh chance to ogle the tweaked Frostbite 2 engine...and dear god it's a tasty-looking game.

In the extended video shown today, Tier 1 Operators land in Somalia's Pirate Town in an effort to bring order to the country's southern region.

This game continues to confound me by appealing to me in terms of concept and aesthetics, and then completely boring me in terms of execution. Hmmm.

EA Capture UFC License

Multi-year Contract In The Bag

Among the ten reveals of EA’s press conference, UFC president Dana White came on stage to make a rather shocking announcement that EA had signed the rights to make UFC licensed games. This comes after the moderate success of THQ’s latest effort, Undisputed 3, which was warmly received by industry critics earlier this year.

This is a huge acquisition for EA after their attempt to hustle in on the action with their previous effort EA MMA, and THQ must certainly be hurting from this announcement. Although we weren’t given much news other than “it’s happening,” we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any further developments as E3 progresses.

SimCity To Release In Feb 2013, SimCity Social Announced

EA Maxis’ Lucy Bradshaw announced at the EA E3 2012 press conference today that the upcoming SimCity would be launching in February next year, along with its glorious multiplayer components, so don't spend all of your Christmas money in January. In fact, just see if you can get your folks to do the present thing in March, that'd be way easier.

Needless to say, there was absolutely no talk of the controversial internet requirement, just a breezy trailer that has made us want the game more...if that was even possible.

Bradshaw also confirmed the existence of SimCity Social, which will be bringing the SimCity experience to Facebook with the tagline "More City, Less Ville". I'm not ashamed to say that I'll probably play the shit out of it.

There are trailers for both below...

Visceral Games showed off the first gameplay footage of Dead Space 3, confirming that the game will incorporate drop in-drop out co-op, and showing off a gameplay video that seemed far more concerned with rattling off rounds than blowing the limbs off of creatures that have just made you poo your pants.

Hmmm.
