With some fancy footwork (and doubtlessly some Euro 2012 hype), FIFA 12 has scored its way back into first place, putting it beyond the up-to-now safe hands of the Ghostly goalkeeper. Sorry, that's as far as that metaphor's likely to go. Future Soldier is down to second place after an impressive three week run, followed up by tortured and cathartic shooter Max Payne 3.
Lollipop Chainsaw, the brilliantly silly and exploitative cheerleading brawler from Grasshopper and Kadokawa, has managed to enter straight into number 4, which is a fantastic achievement for a new title - especially for a singleplayer only game.
Elsewhere, some familiar faces round out the top ten, though Modern Warfare 3 has slipped to 14th, losing ground to BF3, Diablo III and Game Of Thrones.

It's week three for the Ghosts at the top of the UK charts, with Cyanide's Game of Thrones the only newcomer to the list. Mario's Olympics bid creeps back into the top ten at the expense of Prototype 2, and elsewhere it's really just a shuffled deck of familiar cards, with Battlefield 3 climbing, and everything else bar the top three slipping a bit.

The Ghosts are still occupying the top spot as we head into E3 week, with Max Payne 3 sitting pretty in second place again, though both saw a reduction in sales, falling 35% and 39% respectively. Meanwhile, FIFA 12 is back up into the top three, pushing Dragon's Dogma down to fourth. Resistance: Burning Skiesmade its debut at #12, not bad for a Vita exclusive, and thus lending more weight to the argument that we need more Vita games!! Battlefield sneaks back into the top ten after hefty BF Premium rumours, and Diablo III drops down.

Sniper Elite V2 is still sitting pretty at number one this week, and the only changes tothe top ten are that FIFA Street and Prototype 2 have swapped places, and Assassin's Creed Revelations has jumped five places and bumped Modern Warfare 3 out of the list. one can't help but wonder if, instead of saving all of the money for marketing in the most saturated period of the year in winter, it might be a better idea to spend half of the budget dropping one or two titles earlier in the year. It's working for 505.

We have another newcomer at the top this week, with Prototype 2 yielding the number one position to Rebellion's Sniper Elite V2. Elsewhere, last week's COD news has helped bump MW3 back into the top ten, The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition has dropped ten places, but otherwise you'll find familiar faces in this week's top ten.

And this week's winner is...Prototype 2. Activision and Radical Entertainment have knocked The Witcher 2 from the top spot with a fine showing on release from their sequel to 2009's mass-murder simulator. Prototype 2 recorded greater launch sales than Kinect Star Wars and The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition, though it should be noted that those two games were platform exclusives (PC sales of the latter counting for less than 2%), but failed to match those of the original game despite a Tuesday global release.
The usual suspects make up the rest of the top five, with CD Projekt RED's critically acclaimed RPG slipping to 6th.

The nature of sports games, with annual seasons, transfer updates, and the quest for better and more brilliant ways to capture the various games that captivate crowds around the globe, is one of an iterative nature. These are games that release every twelve months, with fresh new rosters, fresh new features (hopefully), and a fresh coat of paint. Of course, when special events roll around, we've seen that yearly trend bucked, with full games released mid-season.
Such happenings have been somewhat controversial in the past, with specific games and full releases for the European Championships and World Cups dating back over two decades. More often than not, changes seemed almost entirely cosmetic, and detractors cried foul for being made to pay full price for what seemed like little more than a makeover.

But we should perhaps be careful what we wish for.

There's a new face in the charts this week (sort of), as Geralt of Rivia returns to take the top spot with the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Enhanced Edition. The Xbox 360 exclusive has dethroned FIFA Street, although the usual suspects make up the rest of the top five. 98% of the Enhanced Edition sales came from the console version, with 2% made up of fresh PC purchases.
The Witcher 2 originally made its debut in last year's charts at #5.

And just like that, the old triumvirate returns. After a week off, as Kinect Star Wars made a barnstorming debut, FIFA Street returns to the top of the charts. There's a little bit of reshuffling in the top ten, but otherwise it's all familiar faces.

Interesting news, sports fans. EA intends to launch the official UEFA Euro 2012 game as a downloadable expansion pack for FIFA 12, suggesting that they have heeded the call to stop releasing quite so many sports games over the course of a year.

Come tell it on the mountain: SSX has taken the top spot this week. EA's long-awaited snowboarding sequel has met with massive critical acclaim and sales success - a fitting reception for a beloved series.
Vita titles are still selling well after their second week on shelves, with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football charting well. However, FIFA 12 has gotten its golden boot in to retake second place, and Assassin's Creed Revelations has rocketed back into contention after unbelievably failing to chart last week.
Wii minigame collection Mario Party 9 has also weighed in with an impressive bronze medal, proving that Wii owners are still desperate for new games - and are a willing and profitable audience that Nintendo shouldn't be ignoring. This is especially impressive since GAME were unable to stock the title at launch.

Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning has had its week in the sun, slipping from 1st place and out of the top ten entirely. Instead, UFC Undisputed 3 has sucker punched before the glove touch (a notable new feature) and fought its way up to the top spot, eclipsing the usual suspects of FIFA 12, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and the Mario & Sonic Olympics tie-in. Be sure to check out Carl's UFC Undisputed 3 review.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 and The Darkness 2 are both selling well, and proving that sequelitis doesn't have to be a debilitating disease.
Skylanders has also managed to claw its way back into the top ten, which is an immensely promising move for the brave cross-platform, cross-medium breakthrough hit. Long may it continue.
As always, we've got the full chart after the jump with links to all our reviews. Hit it!

Not many surprises to be found at the top of the table this week, with FIFA 12 still sitting pretty in pole position. The end of January has seen a little surge from Modern Warfare 3, though, leapfrogging Skyrim to go second. Only one new release this week in the top ten, with Resident Evil: Revelations - bringing the survival horror franchise to the 3DS - made its debut at six. Zumba Fitness is still managing to outsell its sequel, but sadly office faovurite Rayman Origins has just dropped outside the top tier.

FIFA 12 is number one for a fourth week in a row with Just Dance 3 and Skyrim moving back into the top ten ahead of the FPS leviathans. But if there was any doubt as to the extent of the love that last year brought for Zumba, those doubts are banished, with both the original game - Zumba Fitness - and its sequel side by side at 6 and 7 respectively. The only new game in the top 40 - Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 - debuts at 12.

Drum roll please.
UKIE has finally released the full charts of 2011's highest selling games in the UK, platform by platform. As far as the all format charts are concerned, you probably won't be surprised to hear that Modern Warfare 3 has romped to victory - hounded as it is by EA's FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3. Serial chart-botherer Zumba Fitness managed to spectacularly beat Skyrim to fourth place, becoming the only game in the top ten to have not released in the holiday season.
Uncharted 3 and Gears Of War 3 both charted well on their respective systems, while Football Manager claimed overwhelming dominance on the PC.
So there you have it... and who cares? Sales are a poor way of judging games and systems unless you're a tie clip-wearing shareholder, but if you're interested, we've got the full charts below.

FIFA Street's producer Sid Misra has been pretty honest about the history of the franchise, suggesting that the overall quality of previous games in the series was lacking, particularly FIFA Street 3. But he says that the team has learned from previous mistakes, and that they've overhauled their approach to the game's engine and art direction for the upcoming reboot.

He shoots, he scores. FIFA 12 has held onto its New Year first place, officially making it the first UK number one of 2012. A great game, and thoroughly deserved.
In other news, Battlefield 3 has managed to beat Modern Warfare 3 to second place, and RAGE has leapt back into the top ten. The rest of the chart is dominated by familiar faces and our old friend Zumba Fitness. We haven't missed you.

Last week's charts are a little late thanks to the inconvenient public holiday and debauched merriment afforded by the termination of 2011, but the New Year sales figures are finally in. FIFA 12 ends the year on a high in first position, shadowed by Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 in second and third. Christmas Number One The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim dropped to eighth, though it's still a laudable position for a game that isn't part of an annualised franchise.
Elsewhere, the top ten is filled out by the same old faces, but the lower positions are more interesting. Skylanders is still selling well and championing its impressive cross-media potential, while the phenomenal Rayman Origins is also enjoying some well-deserved success. Pat yourselves on the back, purchasers. You made the right decision.

While Bethesda's gargantuan RPG isn't quite the David to Activision's Goliath - both are multi million dollar titles, of course - you can't help but smile to see Skyrim top the charts the week before Christmas. We'd all thought Modern Warfare 3 was guaranteed the top spot, but despite an 8% drop in sales, Skyrim held fast. In fact, MW3 isn't even peering up at Alduin and co from second place, as Just Dance 3 has leapfrogged it from third to second. FIFA 12 holds on to fourth for the second week running, while Saints Row: The Third enjoyed a suitable three place jump to claim fifth.
