EA Access subscription service on Xbox One points towards the future

We knew this was coming.

We've seen it across the other major entertainment mediums -- subscription services designed to offer consumers value, choice, and convenience. It was only a matter of time before a publisher followed in the footsteps of PlayStation Plus and PS Now, and it's happening sooner than we perhaps thought it might.

Not only that, it seems that the pioneer in this regard is EA.

EA Access has launched in beta over on Xbox One in partnership with Microsoft. The service went live earlier this week, giving a limited number of players access to four of EA's biggest titles: FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4. Here's the official blurb for good measure:

EA Access membership unlocks The Vault, a collection of EA’s biggest games on Xbox One ready for you to download and play.  During the beta, gamers will have unlimited access to four great EA games: FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4, with more titles being added soon. That’s over $100 worth of games for $4.99 a month. You can play these EA favorites as much as you want with the click of a button.

Here in the UK, you can sign up already for £3.99 a month. Stateside, there's a pretty damn generous $29.99 annual subscription option, but that's not been made available yet over here. Twelve months at £3.99 a month would run you £47.88.

If you want to get involved in time for Titanfall, this is a tempting deal for a new Xbox One. ShopTo have the cheapest price on the market right now and this edition includes a download code for FIFA 14. Unlike many next-gen versions, FIFA's upgrades in animation are immediately noticeable and it's quite the looker too.

Need the latest up-to-date clubs and stadia every season? Then FIFA's your game and it's never been cheaper than the latest flash deal at Game Collection. Sporting the usual updates and animation improvements, EA's game has once again beaten PES to the title. There's a strong argument that the PS4/Xbone version is the best version but that's not to say this version isn't one of the finest footy games yet.

UK Games Charts | 2nd November 2013

Plenty of new faces this week. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag steals first place from under the nose of Battlefield 4, which itself denies FIFA 14 and Grand Theft Auto V from their top spots. Football Manager 2014 and WWE 2K14 also make a strong debut, bumping the likes of Pokemon X, Just Dance 2014 and Disney Infinity off the top ten entirely.

UK BatGames BatCharts | 26th October 2013

Batman: Arkham Origins is all over this week's charts, storming in at an impressive number one. Even GTA V and FIFA 14 couldn't hold off Warner Bros' prequel, despite it receiving a relatively muted critical reception in comparison to Rocksteady's titles. Elsewhere, Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed has made its debut in ninth place -- whatever it is -- while Rocksmith 2014 has charted in fifteenth.

Otherwise, expect the same old faces and a LEGO blast from the past.

UK Games Charts | 19th October 2013

Little change, please. This week's chart sees one major new entry into the top ten, Skylanders: Swap Force, while the likes of Pokemon X and Y, Beyond: Two Souls and Just Dance jostle for position below. It's another strong showing for Activision's annual transmedia toy game, but sales are down 35% compared to last year. It's hardly surprising since Disney Infinity and the next-gen transition are both breathing down its neck.

GTA V and FIFA 14 still sit pretty atop the charts, as you'd expect, while Sonic: Lost World just missed the top ten and debuted in 11th place. It's a fairly impressive feat considering the Wii U and 3DS exclusive launch, mind.

UK Games Charts | 12th October 2013

This week sees three major new entries smash into the top five: the divisive Beyond: Two Souls and Pokemon's 3DS debut. As you'd expect, they're selling phenomenally well -- especially Pokemon X and Y that reinvigorate the series with superb 3D art design and numerous new features -- but it's not quite enough to unseat GTA V and FIFA from their lofty throne. We'll have reviews for you very soon on all fronts.

Interestingly, UK players seem to favour Pokemon X over Y, perhaps enamoured by the Fairy-type legendary. I personally picked X whereas Matt opted for Y, so we'll likely have a chat about Game Freak's effort in the near future.

Elsewhere it's a straight-up brawl between racing, dancing, Disney, Minecraft and Zelda. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

UK Games Charts | 5th October 2013

FIFA 14 and Grand Theft Auto V still loom large over UK retail, but there's plenty of action below. F1 2013, NBA 2K14 and Just Dance 2014 have all debuted in the top ten, while the Wii U has another relatively rare chart success in The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, clocking in at an impressive 4th place considering the low console install base. UK Games Charts | 28th September 2013

As much as we enjoy causing havoc in expansive crime sandboxes, us Brits do love our footy, as evidenced by FIFA 14 knocking Grand Theft Auto V off its pedestal this week. Though sales are down compared to last year's iteration, perhaps due to the next-gen transition, free Xbox One promotion and, erm, that Rockstar game, it's still selling strong and outpacing its markedly improved rival PES 2014.

GTA V sales have dropped 82% since last week, which may well be refreshed once Grand Theft Auto Online releases this week. In other news, Ubisoft are laughing with a couple of games in the top ten, while Disney Infinity, Minecraft, The Last Of Us and Diablo III continue to chart well.
