COMMENT | PS4 hits another sales milestone - how Sony definitively won a three-horse race

The PlayStation 4 is bringing home the bacon in extraordinary amounts for Sony. Their latest financial report spells it out in black and white: over 22.2 million consoles sold worldwide and $11.5bn raised for the PlayStation division, buoying up the stagnant PlayStation Vita and PS TV.

It's an impressive showing for Sony's powerful machine, but more impressive still is how they managed to achieve it in the first place. Looking back over the last eighteen months, we can see an astonishing campaign of smart, ruthless and successful decisions that put Sony's console clear ahead of the current-gen competition in terms of sales... even though most of the biggest exclusives are still many months away.

Nintendo lose millions as PS4 overtakes Wii U | 2013-2014 financials

Can Mario Kart 8 plug the money hole?

Is anyone else sick and tired of hashing over sales data and balancesheets rather than talking about games? You know, seeing as we're gamers rather than marketing executives? Unfortunately it's technically my remit... and in fairness I haven't broken out the Nintendo flogging paddle in a while. It's getting a bit dusty, despite heavy use last year.

In fact, I don't really want to use it now that Ninty's annual financial report has released to the public - they probably deserve it, but kicking someone while they're down seems seriously unsportsmanlike. Another disastrous showing for the Wii U has led to a net loss, as their floundering console failed to gain any traction over Christmas and actively burns money like some sort of cash-powered blast furnace. Brilliant games notwithstanding.

Nintendo: Iwata takes pay cut as profits slump

Wii U burns a hole in their pockets

Nintendo has revealed their latest sales data for the period between April-December 2013, and as they suspected, it makes for a sobering read. As their profits slump by 30% compared to last year, coupled with continued sluggish sales of the Wii U that might not even hit their brutally culled sales projections, Iwata and the Ninty top brass have accepted a 50% pay cut in an act of contrition.

It's not all bad news, though, as the company is still just about hanging onto a net profit overall, while the 3DS and key software are selling like nobody's business.

Uh-Oh: Square Enix To "Shift To And Focus On" Online, F2P & Mobile

Square Enix' latest financial report has raised eyebrows right off our faces, in that it details a somewhat controversial new gameplan. Going forward, the publisher intends to massively ramp up their freemium and mobile offerings, and shift their "overseas studios" to developing online games.

Studios like Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, perhaps?

Iwata Faces Tough Investor Grilling: "We Do Not See A Dark Future For Nintendo”

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has been hauled over the coals in a new investor Q&A, wherein he remains defiant in the face of accusations of flip-flopping on stereoscopic 3D and failing to secure third party software support for the Wii U. Their ¥100 billion operating income projection remains unchanged.

Nintendo: Wii U "Still Has A Negative Impact On Profits"

Less Than 500,000 Sold Over Six Months

Nintendo have reported a small overall profit in their latest quarterly financial report, but blame the Wii U for underperforming yet again. It's a catch-22: sales are up, but the price cut means that they're still not making any serious money. Plus, "up" is a distinctly relative term.

All hinges, then, on this Christmas.

Sony Financials: Next-Gen R&D Hits Hard

Sony's latest quarterly financial report is exactly what you'd expect from a console manufacturer at the end of a generation: flat sales, but big fat research and development bills to pay.

Oh, and they're still a bit embarrassed about the Vita.

Nintendo has posted their latest quarterly financial results, which indicates a slight drop in sales and revenue, but otherwise a healthy and profitable situation. However, they're having to rely on the 3DS and its big hitters to buoy up some truly miserable Wii U figures.

PlayStation Financials Show Dwindling Sales, Forecasts 'Significant' Upswing

Poor Vita Performance Expected To Continue

Sony's PlayStation-specific FY2013 financial report is fairly unsurprising, in that the malaise surrounding the end of this console generation has lead to a major slump in sales. Still, the Yen's fluctuating value has contributed to the corporation's first annual profit in five years, and Sony predicts a major sales upturn in the next financial year. I wonder why?

It certainly won't be thanks to the Vita, which is predicted to bring home even less bacon.

Nintendo Posts Slim 2012 Profit

But Wii U Sales Still Painfully Slow

Nintendo has posted their FY2013 financial report, which makes for an interesting read (by financial report standards, at least). Though they has failed to meet their sales projections by a staggering 50% margin, an overall profit has defied numerous critics who foresaw another loss for the console manufacturer, and puts them in a strong position next to numerous loss-making publishers.

The TL:DR version is that the 3DS is selling very well indeed, but the Wii U is struggling to shift both hardware and games. If you want to know more, I've rounded up the salient details after the break.
