XCOM 2 is happening and humanity is on the offensive

So I was out at a preview event yesterday. "Never mind," I thought. "Nothing major will happen on a Monday."

Then 2K only went and announced a sequel to bloody XCOM.

It turns out that the mysterious game they were teasing, Advent, is none other than XCOM 2, which takes a very different approach from Enemy Unknown. 20 years after losing the war against the extraterrestrials and undergoing a brutal occupation, the remnants of XCOM are fighting a savage mobile guerilla war to take the planet back. We're the enemy unknown. Watch the trailer and let's have an overdue chat.

Alpha Centauri fans rejoice, because Civilization: Beyond Earth is looking seductively hexual in a newly-released walkthrough video from co-lead designer Will Miller. Sid must have been busy. Either way, the video is exactly the same as the demonstration journalists witnessed behind closed doors at E3, so enjoy your full access pass to what will hopefully be a seriously impressive 4X contender.

You'll see diplomacy, survival, exploration, hexagons aplenty and combat on multiple fronts, alongside a newly-confirmed October 24th release date. We've got our fingers crossed for this one (partly because we've been playing so much Distant Worlds and Endless Legend recently that our hands have deformed, admittedly).

Enemy Within Reception May Influence Future Games

XCOM: Enemy Within is looking seriously impressive ahead of its November launch, but lead designer Ananda Gupta would love to take on the strategy franchise again. Apparently it's down to Firaxis and 2K Games - and perhaps how well Enemy Within is received at retail.

Hello, Commander. XCOM: Enemy Within Officially Announced, Is Expansion Pack

Firaxis have finally blown the lid off XCOM: Enemy Within, which has been revealed as a major expansion for last year's sensational XCOM: Enemy Unknown (my personal GOTY). Enemy Within promises a "massive amount of new content" including maps, enemies, abilities, weapons and gameplay elements when it releases on November 15th.

We'll also be able to construct a genetics lab to tinker with our operatives' DNA. And mechs. Get all the details below.

The new global congress allows players to impose game-changing rules on the world, while Shaka is back to utterly ruin everyone on his starting landmass within a handful of turns.

Julian Gollop: Firaxis "Saved" XCOM From 2K's "Schizophrenic Approach"

Brand Had Gone "Badly Awry"

X-COM creator Julian Gollop has once again praised Firaxis for XCOM: Enemy Unknown, suggesting that the brand was in serious danger from falling back into the bad old days of tacky budget spin-offs that wasted the core strategic gameplay.

Firaxis: Fans Prefer "Big Fat Expansions" To Piecemeal DLC

According to Firaxis producer Dennis Shirk, Civilization players are more interested in revolutionary new gameplay systems rather than bitty little extras, leading to them publishing proper expansion packs rather than regular DLC.

Civilization V: Brave New World Interview | Tourism, Tomb Raiding & The Future Of Civ

Having sampled Civilization V's latest expansion pack in our Brave New World hands-on preview, we were keen to explore some of the deeper and persistent gameplay systems that Firaxis' latest offering brings to the experience. To this end, we sat down with producer Dennis Shirk to discuss the totally revamped Culture Victory, archaeology, tourism, new Civs and the future of the Civilization franchise.

Jonathan Lester (Dealspwn): Thanks for talking to us, Dennis. In an age where "dumbing down" and "shooter fatigue" are fast becoming buzzwords, why do you think that Civilization is so enduring?

Dennis Shirk (Firaxis): That's a tough one. I think it has to do with Sid [Meier]'s original design, you know, as Mel Brooks would say: "it's good to be the king." Letting players have all the decision-making throughout the game - they make all of the decisions in terms of what happens to their people and their civilizations, from the stone age to the space age - it empowers the player. You don't just play through and then the story's done, you go back and play a different story that unfolds in a completely different way.

You can do it over and over again. There's just limitless amounts of options for players in Civ V, or any Civilization. I think that's the genius of his foundation: there's a limitless amounts of possibilities in terms of what you can do.

Civilization V: Brave New World Interview | Tourism, Tomb Raiding & The Future Of Civ

Dealspwn: Let's get down to business: Brave New World. Your latest DLC pack totally revamps the culture system. Could you tell us about that?

Dennis Shirk: Sure! We basically changed the way the Culture Victory works. Before, you had a really exciting beginning of the game, you were building your wonders etc. But you got to a point in the middle of the game where you're just hitting next turn, you're just trying to get the broadcast towers that's going to make your culture blast. But you're just hitting next turn and trying to fill up your five policy trees, and it just wasn't as interesting or compelling as the other victories in the game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown | £12.95 | Zavvi | PC

XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been one of the most popular games of 2012 here at Dealspwn, it even nabbed Jon's personal pick for Game of the Year. This tactical strategy reboot of the old series has been met with widespread critical acclaim for maintaining its traditional values with just the right amount of modern features to bring in a new crowd. It's still not for everyone, so maybe give the demo a shot first.

It's always good to get the seal of approval fro the legend who created the original upon which your reboot is based, and Julian Gollop appears to be pretty pleased with the manner in which Firaxis rebooted his original game - UFO: Enemy Unknown - with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, saying that the team did "a great job".

Fixes S.H.I.V.s and Overwatch

Firaxis are hard at work on another patch for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. According to the in-progress change list, the update will make the Easy difficulty mode easier, improve roof visibility and fix some niggling leftover problems. Such as broken S.H.I.V. mechs, for one thing, not to mention erroneous aim penalties when standing still during overwatch.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review | The Right Decision

Platforms: PC | PS3 | Xbox 360 (reviewed)

Developer: Firaxis

Publisher: 2K Games

Choices have consequences, but most games tend to forget it. Barring the cause-and-effect of trigger, bullet and hitbox or grenade and explosion, only the best games force us to genuinely experience the ramifications of our actions - and even some of the shining beacons of our industry sometimes railroad us into decisions when push comes to shove. Many of us look back to the past for the freedom to make our own luck and our own mistakes, to franchises like Julian Gollop's X-COM, which gave us genuine agency over our... well... government agency.

In an ironic twist of fate, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is itself a product of action and reaction. 2K Marin's proposed FPS reboot lead to a backlash of staggering proportions (which might not have been entirely justified, frankly), but the demand for a strategic reboot spurred Firaxis into action, who were dead set on creating a return to form that lived up to the series' momentous legacy without compromise. Not only has the protracted battle against an implacable alien terror been re-realised with a stonking amount of player freedom in mind, but the veteran strategy studio has laboured to remove the tedium and fuss that's often inherent to the turn-based strategy genre, creating a game that delights in making its cavernous depth both accessible and visceral to armchair generals and action junkies alike.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review | The Right Decision

Never mind all that, though, because XCOM: Enemy Unknown ultimately presents us with a single important choice: should you buy it? At the risk of making the rest of this review completely redundant, the answer is an emphatic YES.

It's the right decision, and one of the best you'll make this year.
