Microsoft Dismiss Valve Competition Threat

Does Microsoft see Valve as a competitor in the battle for the living room? Not really. Don Mattrick, Xbox president of Interactive Entertainment, has stated rather emphatically that although Valve are clearly  looking to innovate in that space, Microsoft's main competition will arise from more traditional, familiar names.

COMMENT | Steam Box: The Revolution Will Be Televised

Well it finally happened. Those of us who've been sitting on the edge of our seats since Valve unveiled Big Picture Mode, waiting anxiously for some shred of affirmation that the company behind Steam might be making their own TV-oriented console of sorts, have finally got a reason to jump and shout and hug and cry and yammer excitedly before realising that this thing is still well over a year away.

The Steam Box is coming, and its arrival shall shake the games industry to its very core, toppling incumbents who thought themselves safe, leading the charge of indie developers to all-consuming victory, and sticking the finger up at conservative suits previously desperate to milk the consumer hordes dry and stand in the way of progress in the name of profits.

Maybe.

CONFIRMED: Valve Are Making Their Own Steam Box

Hot on the heels of yesterday's news regarding the Valve-funded Xi3 Steam Box, Gabe Newell has finally admitted in a new interview that Valve are making one of their own (codenamed Bigfoot internally), outlining a few broad plans to hit the living room gaming space in a big way, and providing vague pictures of biometric controllers, a more open Steam experience, and several new digs at motion controls and Windows 8.

Newell: Windows 8 Will "Accelerate" Microsoft's Decline

Valve luminary Gabe Newell has elaborated on points made earlier this year, suggesting that Windows 8 represents an attempt to emulate Apple's success with the App Store. However, he reckons that copying a competitor's closed platform could serve to "accelerate" Microsoft's decline, not mark a reversal of fortune.

Indeed, the fact that he feels that Microsoft are in "decline" is interesting in and of itself.

Windows 8 "Not Awesome" For Blizzard Either Apparently

Blizzard And Valve Settle Their DOTA Dispute

The lawyers have been called off, the spud guns of suing put down, and the handbags hung up once more. Blizzard and Valve have settled their differences and come to an agreement on the whole DOTA situation, which has ultimately resulted in Valve keeping the name for commercial use.

Newell Opens Up About "Twists And Turns" Delaying Half Life 3

Bearded legend Gabe Newell recently made some odd comments about Ricochet 2, a game that Valve definitely isn't developing. Apparently a mix of 'positive and negative surprises' are holding it up, not to mention an unwillingness to tease the fanbase before they're good and ready to reveal. Considering Valve's love of the obtuse and coy, we can safely assume that he's talking about Half Life 3 or HL2 Episode 3... and why it's taking so damn long.

Newell: 'Draconian DRM Systems' Push People Away, Piracy Not Necessarily About Pricing

In a recent interview with Ben Kuchera, who brought up the used games mess and the pertinent topic of piracy, Valve guru Gabe Newell slammed what he terms "draconian DRM systems or anti-piracy systems", arguing that in many cases piracy has little to do with pricing models and more to do with better service.

"To us it seems pretty obvious that people always want to treat it as a pricing issue, that people are doing this because they can get it for free and so we just need to create these draconian DRM systems or ani-piracy systems, and that just really doesn’t match up with the data."

Newell: Apple Will Redefine & Replace Console Gaming

But It's The "Wrong Philosophical Approach"

Apple have made great strides into low-cost gaming thanks to the overwhelming success of the App Store, and many pundits believe that they're perfectly placed to make a foray into the mainstream. Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve (and utter legend of the highest order) is among them - and he "suspects" that they will launch a living room-centric product that will oust the notions of dedicated consoles. However, he also believes that closed platforms are the "wrong approach" to gaming that will backfire in the long run... and that a hypothetical Steam console would let its games release on competing services. We've got the full quotes and story below.

Valve's mind-bending, co-operative masterpiece was a tour de force in game design and narrative genius, and so we couldn't be happier to report that it has sold over three million copies since its April release. That's according to Valve's head honcho, Gabe Newell.

...But "Keeping Their Eyes On" L.A. Noire Tech

source

When we cornered Valve's Chet Faliszek for an interview at a recent EA Showcase, we were quick to ask him whether the venerable Source engine was finally running out of steam (no pun intended). His answer was that they'd "keep adapting it" to suit their requirements - and Valve have now confirmed that they have no plans to create a new engine in the near future. However, they are apparently keeping an interested eye on the facial animation software displayed by Rockstar's upcoming L.A. Noire. Valve also plan to stay out of the engine licensing race - and we have the full details below.
