Jenova Chen: "People Are Getting Tired Of The Same Things"

Thatgamecompany's Jenova Chen has spoken about how "lucky" he and his team were to land a contract on PSN, ascribing Journey's critical success to a mixture of timing, people growing tired of traditional forms of gaming, and a greater appreciation and affinity for development, which comes with time.

PWNCAST | Season 1: Episode 5 - Overheard At GDC

It's PWNCAST day, folks! This week we gush about Journey, rip Syndicate a new one, discuss the big GDC debate surrounding modern Japanese games, take a look at the Kara traiiler, and ask if Peter Molyneux is better off without Microsoft breathing down his neck. It's the usual mish-mash of industry insight, witty (and not-so-witty) banter, sexy fun times, and we have another competition in store for you.

Yes, that's right, we found an extra Xbox 360 copy of Mass Effect 3 floating around after our Tiwtter party earlier this week. So listen in to the podcast to find out how you could be in with a chance of winning.

NB. The competition will close at noon on Thursday 15th March.

PWNCAST | Season 1: Episode 5 - Recorded: March 9th, 2012

Topics include:

  • Unit 13
  • Journey
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Syndicate
  • Inafune vs. Modern Japanese development
  • That Kara trailer
  • Molyneux's departure

...and much more!

Bleszinski: "Notch Is The Games Industry's Justin Bieber"

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has lightly suggested that Markus Persson (Notch) is a little bit like the games industry version of Justin Bieber, insofar as both have enjoyed seemingly overnight success, though the true effort behind the scenes has been building for "a very long time".

Resident Evil Producer Agrees With Inafune, Promises To 'Expand The IP'

More "Offshoot Titles" In The Works

Ex-Capcom creative director Keiji Inafune had a few choice words for the Japanese games industry yesterday, calling it out as "closed-minded" and a shadow of its former glorious self. However, the father of Mega Man also suggested that studios needed to innovate with their IPs in order to succeed, and Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata has publicly agreed with the sentiment.

Kawata pledges to research "around the world" to ensure that Resident Evil games have international appeal, as well as offering several new spin-off titles for the Resi franchise.

Game Developers Choice Awards 2012 Winners

Portal 2 & Bastion Win Big, Skyrim Wins Overall

The GDC Awards were announced in a ceremony last night, and the winner is likely to surprise anyone. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took top honours, but impressively, Portal 2 scooped up no less than three awards including best narrative and design.

Bastion and Supergiant Games also won two awards for best downloadable game and best newcomer. Well deserved in our book, and we can't wait to see what they're working on now.

In terms of special awards, Deus Ex (and more recently Epic Mickey) creator Warren Spector snagged a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Dave Theurer won the Pioneer Award due to his work creating Missile Command.

We've got the full awards and nominations after the break.

Fez Creator Phil Fish Slams Modern Japanese Games, Says They "Just Suck"

It's all kicked off at this year's GDC, as Fez creator Phil Fish responded to a question asking for his opinion on modern Japanese games by saying that they "just suck".

The question was put to a panel that included Fish and Braid creator Jonathan Blow, following a screening of Indie game: The Movie. Fish's rather blunt response was "your games just suck", with Blow reportedly agreeing, calling modern Japanese games "joyless husks".

Dyack: New Eternal Darkness "Not Too Much To Ask"

It's not too big a shout to declare that Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was one of the finest games to grace the Gamecube. Although it didn't set the world alight with sales (pretty much the story of the Gamecube, that), it was a critically acclaimed slice of psychological horror. better still, Silicon Knights aren't ruling out a return.
