Celebrating The Weird & Wonderful: The Brilliantly Bonkers Games of 2014

Many people accuse videogames of stagnating and treading water, rehashing old ideas instead of pushing forward with new and exciting concepts.

These people are hilariously wrong. Or concussed. Or only play AAA games.

We live in an age when developers large and small have the opportunity to create innovative, crazy, uninhibited and plain bizarre games for our eager delectation, and that can shatter our expectations as well as our sanity from time to time. 2014 has been no exception, so here are some of the delirious delights we've sampled over the last few months!

I Am Bread

Celebrating The Weird & Wonderful: The Brilliantly Bonkers Games of 2014

We're all for equality in games, so being able to play as a piece of sliced bread is long overdue. No, really, that's the whole idea behind this wonderful little oddity. You'll control your crusty character in a desperate bid to reach the toaster, facing off against a surprisingly robust physics engine and devious household challenges.

It's the best thing since... no, I can't do it. I won't do it.

Goat Simulator Unleashes the Weird for £3.99

Goat Simulator | Humble | £3.99 | Review

Well, there's the most mental screenshot I'll be posting on the site today. Beginning as something of a joke game at a gamejam, Goat Simulator is now a real thing. Enjoy a day in the life of a goat generally wrecking shit, licking things with a ten foot tongue and giving dead-eyed bleats at traffic before charging at it.

Goat Simulator Review | Just Kidding Around

Goat Simulator is one of the first games that I've ever come across that arrives with a disclaimer from the developers concerned, actively warning people off of the game:

Goat Simulator is a small, broken and stupid game. It was made in a couple of weeks so don’t expect a game in the size and scope of GTA with goats. In fact, you’re better off not expecting anything at all actually. To be completely honest, it would be best if you’d spend your $10 on a hula hoop, a pile of bricks, or maybe a real-life goat.

And it might be right, you know.

For some, the thought of prancing about a pretty tiny, yet jam-packed sandbox as a crazy, bleating billy will seem completely pointless. Goat Simulator is a bit of an aberration -- a joke perhaps taken too far -- a broken, buggy mess that makes a mockery of game development and serves only as a flash in the pan designed to exploit today's obsession with YouTube-captured mishaps.

Goat Simulator is all of those things. Whether or not it's worth your ten dollars (or six pounds) will come down to how much of that you find amusing.

Goat Simulator is utterly baaarmy and I can't stop playing it

I had to buy it. £6.18 seems a paltry price for getting stuck into a game that should never really have existed. But the Internet wants what the Internet wants, and after the rapturous reception to the first trailer for Goat Simulator, Coffee Stain Studios realised that this utterly barmy concept had captured the imaginations of a fair few people.

It's fitting that the game releases today of all days, but Goat Simulator is far from an April Fools' gag. Instead what you get for your ten dollars is a playpen of anarchy -- a little sandbox of destructible environments, oddball challenges, and daft achievements to unlock. It's deliciously open to modding, and I can't wait to see what people come up with in the weeks ahead. It's another YouTube darling, like Surgeon Simulator and Octodad before it, though without the purposefully botched controls.

It's a game that lets you become a jetpack-clad goat wreaking havoc on a small town, and that's amazing. There's a review coming shortly. No, really -- that's not an April Fools' gag either.

Goat Simulator is now a real game, coming to Steam

"Okay Internet, You Win"

Goat Simulator may have started life as a joke Game Jam project, but has become so popular that Coffee Stain Studios are turning it into a real game. No, really, you can pre-order it right now. That's supply and demand in action.

New features include the ability to chase people around with park benches stuck to your tongue. Frankly, it's already GOTY 2014 material. Trailer below.
