Games at Retail: Adapt or Die

Last week finally saw HMV find a new buyer, ensuring one more traditional bricks and mortar business would enable gaming to have a high street presence alongside Blockbuster and Game. With most of us using online retailers to buy and pre-order games nowadays, you may wonder why we still need video games to be represented on the high street.

As this console generation winds down, we’ve seen a steep decline in game sales across the board. In 2012, retail sales were hit the most and dropped by over 20%. Game, Blockbuster and HMV barely survived, as gamers’ attention wavered. The original Wii’s bubble burst and there was a lack of any serious mass appeal products to renew lapsed players’ (read: more casual than you and I for example) interest. The numbers for Call of Duty are down and we’re repeatedly hearing of sequels selling only a shadow of what the previous game did – hello DMC.

So much rests on the shoulders of the next gen machines. Jaded consumers need to be blown away again with powerful graphics and innovative concepts that they can’t find on current gen consoles. If you think these things aren’t important then take a look at the Wii U. If retail stores can be a big part of the launch of next-gen consoles then they stand a better chance of being carried through with the renewed enthusiasm that gaming is crying out for and more importantly, customers might keep coming back.

Buyout Negotiations Making "Good Progress"

However, it's possible that the beleagured retailer will move to massively downsize their videogame collection or even stop selling them entirely.

HMV: 66 Stores Set To Close

Today brings us numerous reports that HMV are to close between 60-70 stores over the next two months. However, Hot UK Deals moderator Goonertillidie has posted up an internal list of the 66 stores in question, tying in with a report from MCV that mentions the exact same figure.

You can read the list on HUKD or below the break, and we wish the very best to the 900+ employees affected by this news. With luck, HMV will secure a buyer for the remaining stores soon, especially now that Hilco has assumed control of their debts.

Deloitte: We're "Fighting In The Trenches" For Blockbuster

Administrators aren't robots, you know. Deloitte's Lee Manning, a man who's attempted to drag many a UK high street chain out of the financial quicksand into which poor management has led them, is currently acting as administrator for Blockbuster UK, and likens the process to  being caught in trench warfare.

HMV Saved By Bank Rescue Package

It's no secret that HMV have been on the ropes throughout 2011, and after rumours of scaling back their videogames selection surfaced last week, things were looking bleak for the high street retailer. However, strong support from music and movie suppliers have encouraged the banking syndicate behind the company to give them "more financial headroom" and waive some of the more stringent covenant tests on the indebted chain's borrowings. HMV predicts that they'll be able to reduce their debt by 50% over the next three years, making them financially secure in the short term future.

But I've only got one question left to ask. If HMV is in so much financial trouble, then why are there always such massive queues every time I go into Southend high street? It's enough to make you want to shop online instead... oh. [MCV]

HMV Scaling Back On Games?

Disappointing Christmas Return To Blame

After an 8.2% drop in sales during the five-week Christmas period compared to last year, UK retail chain HMV is looking in to a possible scaling back in their videogame sales department in an effort to rescue the company's slipping profits. The popular retailer revealed the drop in sales was not reflected across their market share in CDs or DVDs, as the share in the videogames market fell 16% across the UK.

re play app

If you've browsed here from Hot UK Deals, you'll know the value of trading games in and securing the best prices for doing so. HMV have announced that they'll be making your deal hunting a little easier with a free iOS and Android app that displays live trade-in prices. You can search for games titles or scan the barcode with your phone camera while on the move (or while shopping around on the high street).

Whether users choose the manual search option or the equally simple barcode scanner, they will be given an instant trade-in value for their games and consoles before being directed to their nearest HMV. Our re/play app will not only reduce current store transaction times, but will enable customers to quickly select new games and other products they wish to trade-in against, safe in the knowledge of how much they have to spend. - HMV's re/play manager Martin Baxter

Okay then. Let us know if you plan to use it! [GI]
