Insomniac Launches Outernauts On Facebook

Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Studios have launched their first social game on Facebook, which you can play for free right here (and for all our sakes, do opt out of the profile notifications, cheers). Assuming the role of an intrepid Outernaut, players capture and raise a selection of evolving creatures with Gravity Balls, train them up to battle each other in turn-based combat and... wait, hang on. Basically it's Pokemon, only with more microtransactions and currencies than you can shake a flaming alien cat at.

Outernauts can still be fun. It's got some loot to hunt/grind for, a lengthy storyline and addictive building mechanics along with an attractive comic-inspired aesthetic. But it's not exactly the revolution we expected when Insomniac first announced their foray into the social space. Screenshots below.

Facebook Apps, and with the age of triple-A dominance being questioned at every turn, its boss has been quick to issue a fairly stark ultimatum to their peers.

Expand your audience - or die.
