Avalanche Studios Teases Another Screenshot, More Just Cause Than Mad Max

Avalanche Studios have loosed another image into the wild, depicting a man freefalling towards an aeroplane in mid-flight. Presumably in order to grapple onto it. It's likely, then, that Just Cause 3 will be officially announced before too long.

Interestingly though, the character design suggests that a picture teased earlier this month might not be for a rumoured Mad Max project after all...

Avalanche Studios Tease New Game With Blurry Image

Avalanche Studios, not to be confused with Disney Infinity devs Avalanche Software, have teased a blurry picture of  what appears to be some desert-bound, acrobatic action. The developers were rumoured to be fashioning both Just Cause and Mad Max titles for next gen, but which one is pictured here. Is that Rico's harness? Do the desert setting and rough-looking vehicles point towards Mad Max? Is it neither of the above.

We're pretty divided on this one.

Square Enix Snap Up Just Cause 4 Domains

Is this a sign of things to come, or are Square Enix just preparing for all eventualities, you know, just to be safe? The only thing we know for certain is that the publisher has been snapping up domain names for Just Cause 4 - JustCause4.com, JustCause4.fr, JustCause4.co.uk, JustCause4.de, and JustCause4.it.

Green Man Gaming Daily Deals | Deus Ex: HR, Hearts of Iron 3 & S.P.A.Z

Another day, another set of deals from Green Man Gaming. While yesterday’s offering wasn’t really worth rounding up, we’ve got a few tasty deals to highlight in this cycle. That said, Kane & Lynch 2 can be purchased for a fiver less over at The Game Collection, while Total War: Shogun 2 can be grabbed at HMV for a few pounds less than GMG’s current offer.

Other than those two listings, everything else is looking fairly good. After failing to drop their price to a competitive point yesterday, GMG have slashed the price even further for the Augmented Edition of Deus Ex: Human Revolution to just above a tenner, £4 clear of the next best deal. The Hearts of Iron 3: Collection is also now on offer with a saving of nearly £6 available.

Elsewhere, Space Pirates And Zombies has fallen to the price of a pint, saving you £4.50, and there are savings to be found on Just Cause and Cargo! The Quest for Gravity.

Avalanche Set Up New Offices, Announce 'Project Mamba'

Avalanche Studios, having recently opened up new offices in New York, have just announced that work is underway on a secretive title known as 'Project Mamba', that won't see the light of day until 2014. This probably means it'll be a next-gen title, which is all very exciting indeed.

And a just price, too. For a mere two pounds, you can nab the original Just Cause off Steam. It's not quite as polished or feature-rich as its rip-roaring sequel, but Just Cause is still a fantastic romp. I wish they hadn't got rid of Rico's odd running animation, too; it was hilarious. You have 250 square kilometers of tropical sprawl to explore, be it parachuting onto the roof of a speeding car or driving said car off a ravine and diving out like James Bond's Latin counterpart.

Just Cause 2: Limited Edition £27.99 @ HMV [PS3 & XBox 360 Games] photo

Not usually known for their great selection of cheap games, HMV have given us a lovely surprise today with the relatively new and extremely enjoyable Just Cause 2 for only £27.99 for either console!

If it's the PS3 version you're after then you stand to save almost £10 as the next best price for the limited edition is £36.49 from Powerplay Direct who are also the next cheapest retailer for the 360 version with a price tag of £34.99.  Not only is this the best deal for the collectors version of the game but, now that the Simply Games deal has expired, it even undercuts the best price for a normal edition for either console by a good few pounds too.

This offer is bound to be short lived so get your skates on for this deal!

As well as the thrill of different packaging, the limited version includes the "Black Market Chaos Pack" which gives you five downloadable guns and gadgets, special items and a fold out informative map which highlights sweet points for potential mayhem. You even get a skull pattern parachute. Stylish.

Just Cause 2 is a riotous, anarchic adventure set in a beautiful sandbox world that is a joy to explore and set fire to. Unfortunately it is marred by a laundry list of irritating glitches and the targeting system is all but broken which means that gunfights are often not as fun as they should be. Nonetheless, there is more than enough here to make Rico's latest journey well worth taking.

Just-Cause-2-1

Ask anyone who’s played this game if it’s any good and almost instantly they’ll start frantically gibbering on about how amazing it is using the grappling line to cause absolute chaos. So stop waiting for it to go sub-£20 and get involved.

JC2 is a massive improvement over the original. Not only is there more to do in the tropical paradise, it looks a hell of a lot better than the ropey original which was stretched across PS2/Xbox consoles and the then new 360.

The action takes place in Panau, a series of islands that range from beaches, lush tropical jungles and high mountain ranges. Once again you play as the heroically stereotypically named Hispanic CIA agent Rico Rodriquez, you’re trying to overthrow a dictator or something, but the story takes a backseat to the inspired action.

The open approach you can take the missions in this huge sandbox game work better when you decide to get creative rather than go for the usual run-and-gun tactics. The grappling hook / parachute combo returns enabling you to climb buildings like Spiderman and leap off and glide to safety. Thing start to get really interesting thanks to the hook’s new ability to tether itself to two objects. For example, while hitching a ride on a car roof you can fire your hook at a chasing car then fire the other end at a tree and watch the car get torn off the road. Once you start attaching soldiers, motorbikes and exploding gas canisters into the mix, the fun really begins.

For a full run down of the game, check out Matt’s review.

Rico's back, and he's trying to overthrow the regime of another tropical island, this time the enormous archipelago that makes up the nation of Panau. He's brought his grappling hook and his parachute and his Cuban heels along with him again, and ridiculous stunts and gleefully OTT action are the order of the day in this sequel to the 2006 sandbox game.

Just Cause 2 is a deliciously anarchic sandbox action title that reminds us why we started playing games in the first place: FUN! If you're not too bothered about plot and just want a game that is, literally, a blast to play, you could do much worse than taking a vacation with Rico. The Hut are currently the cheapest by about 4p, but thanks to their Easter weekend voucher deals you can knock a further £2 off of the price, widening the gap between the nearest competitor over at Coolshop. Just enter BANK2 at the checkout.

Remember to enter BANK2 at the checkout to get it for this price!

I've got a big soft spot for the Just Cause games. The first was a riotous action game that suffered from one major flaw that will cripple any game, especially a sandbox title: there wasn't enough to do. By contrast, the sequel, sporting a vast map (Panau is huge), is stuffed with missions galore, military bases to ransack, strongholds to demolish, villages to liberate, and hundreds of collectibles. The sheer size of this game needs to be seen to be believed.

Panau itself is a joy to behold, and the game proves graphically stunning on all platforms, incorporating lush jungle with dry spots of desert, where snow capped mountains reach down towards clear blue sea.  The game world has been lovingly crafted into an island paradise and, although you might find yourself relatively far away from civilisation at times, a quick helicopter extraction option means you're never stranded for long at all.

I could tell you in detail all about the fairly unassuming story, or the woolly aiming system, or the laughably bad voice acting, but the truth is that they don't really matter. This is a game that plonks you down on an island like a cross between John McClane and Robinson Crusoe and lets you, no, encourages you, to cause as much mayhem to the status quo as possible. And it's brilliant fun!

March 2010 Game Releases

We're into the last week of March, and here comes another new releases post. Chaotic sandbox sequel Just Cause 2 will no doubt be making waves this week (look out for our review on Wednesday), the DS is getting what looks to be a fantastic little game in Infinite Space, and hopefully Red Steel 2 will banish the sour taste of mediocrity left behind by the original.

How to use: Click on the title of the video game if you would like to see the cross platform possibilities. Click on the game cover of the platform of your choice to see the price comparison for that particular game, showing you the cheapest prices from UK online retailers.

Stay tuned, folks, as we'll be updating you with all of the new releases for the first week in April along with their cheapest prices in just a few days' time.

NB. Game developers are notoriously flighty so be aware some of these dates may well change.
