Lego Dimensions Review - Brilliant but blocked

Gamers of all ages have been enjoying Traveller's Tales' Lego games for years now, but now they can finally play with real Lego bricks as a part of the game. With the runaway success of the toys-to-life trendsetter, Skylanders, it's a mystery why it's taken this long for the Lego games to jump into the genre.

Rather than focus on one IP, this new series is a mashup of multiple franchises and movie licenses. In the box, you'll find dinky NFC-chipped Lego minifigs for Batman, Gandalf and WyldStyle. Together they must take on evil forces across dimensions to save the day by beating up goons, smashing up environments and holding the Circle button to rebuild odd yet useful tools. So far, so Lego, right?

Except, in order to use the inter-dimensional gateway, you'll have to build it first. With actual Lego, with your own hands. This is your docking station where you place character and vehicle models. You can use the manual, or follow the on-screen version to put it together. It took us (a couple who hasn't touched a Lego brick in many years) about an hour to build along with the other characters and a car. Don't worry if you're rubbish at Lego or if you're buying for a younger child who isn't quite there yet, the game can't actually tell what you've built, so you can't 'get it wrong.'

See Waves 1-5 of LEGO Dimensions minifigs as your wallet weeps

There's just under two months left until LEGO Dimensions arrives, and ahead of what gamers (and parents) everywhere will be calling "the slayer of disposable income" we have an image of the first four waves of minifigs that will be released outside of the starter pack. The image (found over at Eurobricks) confirms there will be twenty two minifigs in Wave One, with six more coming in waves Two and Three, four in Wave Four, and three in Wave Five. The surprise addition in the final wave is called the "Midway Arcade" (no. 71235 on the image) which we're assuming will be a homage to arcades of yesteryear. It will apparently come with its own level - not every minifig does - but there is no confirmed release date or mention of the content for it. That said, we can hazard a guess it might include some Joust, Marble Madness, and Paperboy in some capacity.

If seeing all those minifigs has got you excited, and your wallet has run away in fear, be sure to check out the cheapest pre-order prices - as well as the latest trailer - in our recent LEGO Dimensions pre-order round-up.

Lego Dimensions and Christopher Lloyd threaten to destroy space time continuum

[UPDATE: We've just found some exceptionally cheap preorders for Lego Dimensions here.]

Great Scott, indeed! Today's latest trailer shows Back to the Future's Christopher Lloyd discovering the hidden portal delights of Lego Dimensions and we get another look at the mashup of famous characters threatening the space time continuum as multiple genres and licensed universes collide. Batman, Lord of the Rings (was that a Lego Balrog? OMFG!), Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, Portal 2, Doctor Who, DC comics, The Simpsons and Jurassic World are all confirmed already.

With toys-to-life raking in some serious cash nowadays, we think this could well print money for Warner and Lego, and going by the success of The Lego Movie and Traveller's Tales past lego games, this might just explode. Yes, parents, this is your worst nightmare fully realised.

COMMENT | LEGO Dimensions could leave the competition behind this Christmas

(because it's actually a toy, not a Happy Meal)

The Toy To Life genre is incredibly popular and making money hand-over-fist. Ever since Skylanders set the trend, a videogame with a supporting line of NFC figures that unlock content and characters, the concept exploded as Disney Infinity and Amiibos brought new features and competition into the fray. Gamers young and old have been enjoying it even if our bank balances haven't.

Unfortunately for Activision, Disney Interactive and Nintendo, though, the new kid on the block is set to eclipse the lot of them. LEGO Dimensions is handily the most important TTL franchise we've seen yet, not just because of its new licensing deals, but also because it corrects the most glaring short-sighted issue that Skylanders, Amiibo and Disney Infinity 2.0 still haven't managed to solve.

Or in other words: LEGO Dimensions finally gets the "Toy" bit right rather than offering us Happy Meal rejects.

Lego Dimensions: how the magic of Lego could dethrone Skylanders

Lego Dimensions has just been announced, finally confirming the rumours that Warner Bros Interactive were getting in on the toys-to-life genre that has flourished in recent years with the likes of Skylanders, Disney Infinity and more recently, Amiibos.

As adult gamers, we're often quite cynical about this burgeoning genre, as it often seems like an exploitative cash grab designed to prey upon the pester power of kids on their parents. Or as we've seen with the Amiibos, honing in on your most loyal fans with toys that add very little to a gaming experience and even worse, releasing limited numbers of some of them, making fans snap them up even sooner, before the eBay merchants get them all. Worse yet, most of these toys add nothing to a game that couldn't have just been DLC.

But, why are we getting excited about Lego Dimensions? Isn't it just going to be more of the same and Traveller's Tales aren't exactly known for messing with a winning formula? I'll tell you, because Lego Dimensions is actually going to include Lego. Real Lego pieces for you to build with. 269 of them in the Starter Pack.

Lego Dimensions: how the magic of Lego could dethrone Skylanders

As fun as the Lego games have been over the years (especially in multiplayer), you've never had to build anything in-game, with the exception of a brief item placing minigame seen in Lego Lord of the Rings, which never made an appearance in the Lego Hobbit game. But then again if they can cut a whole film from their plans (Five Armies DLC was cancelled), I shouldn't have been surprised to see corners cut elsewhere.

Lego Dimensions officially announced as Skylanders rival: check out the reveal trailer

Lego Dimensions

Following a timely leak earlier today, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment have officially announced Lego Dimensions (perhaps a little earlier than they intended).

It will function much like Skylanders or Disney Infinity, with players able to buy NFC-chipped official Minifigures and playsets that can transfer characters into a tie-in videogame via a LEGO Portal peripheral.

A familiar idea, but LEGO Dimensions is set to bring an entirely new... dimension... to the traditional NFC experience since we'll actually be able to play with articulated minifigures that are compatible with the LEGO sets we already own, as opposed to just collecting static figurines. Not to mention mixing together characters from loads of famous franchises too.
