Official Wireless Controller, LEGO Indy & Kung Fu Panda (Wireless Entertainment Pack) £18.99 @ PowerplayDirect [Xbox 360 Games]

Official Wireless Controller, LEGO Indy & Kung Fu Panda (Wireless Entertainment Pack) £18.99 @ PowerplayDirect [Xbox 360 Games]

Xbox 360 wireless controllers are an essential part of our gaming arsenal and carry an RRP of £32.99 by themselves… but this deal will allow you to pick one up with two excellent games for less than twenty quid! The Wireless Entertainment Pack provides staggering value without a discount and PowerplayDirect are currently retailing at £18.99. This pack has sold out almost everywhere else, but this deal will save you at least a tenner. Note that Play’s ‘PlayTraders’ are seemingly retailing for a cheaper price… but it doesn’t include the wireless controller! Also, with all due respect, I’ve had some fairly shady experiences with PlayTrade and I’d point most people away from it.

The Xbox 360 Wireless controller is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest peripherals ever brought to market. A perfect blend of ergonomic sculpting and precision design, it puts the DualShock to shame in terms of raw comfort. Recessed triggers and sleek curves allow it to naturally slip into any palm… though of course, there is a sting in the tail. You’ll need to buy some NiMH rechargeables or a Play and Charge Kit to really make the most of it- as it’ll eat through all but the most expensive regular batteries very quickly.

LEGO Indiana Jones is considered to be one of the weakest of the LEGO series (especially when compared with its sequel), but it’s still a handy little game with a heap of content. Blending two classic franchises together is a guaranteed way of creating genuine nostalgia, and Lego Indy will provide a fair bit of lighthearted fun.

Kung Fu Panda gets my vote as being one of the best movie tie-ins of all time. Imagine Ninja Gaiden, but swap out gore for adorable animals and you’re somewhere near the mark. The range of attacks and techniques are surprisingly impressive and brutal… and this one’s well worth a punt for fans of the film. Oh, and it’s got some easy achievements too.

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures £9.99 @ Play [PS3 Games]

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures £9.99 @ Play [PS3 Games]

Fans of Indiana Jones and the silly-but-with-serious-production-values Lego series, who for some reason don’t yet have the video that splices the two, might like to check out this deal.

Play and Amazon Jersey are both offering the game for £9.99 but the latter has a 2-3 waiting time for stock. In fact it’s pretty darn convenient that Play have the cheapest price because, with virtually every retailer completely sold out, it seems that Indy’s plastic incarnation is suddenly harder to get hold of than an eel that’s been wriggly around in fairy liquid on a bed of banana skins. In fact I could only find one other shop with the game to hand, Coolshop, who are asking an additional £8 on top of Play’s price.

The formula is largely unchanged from the original Star Wars outing for Lego and the control scheme is identical. Fittingly for the subject matter however, there is more adventuring this time around along with more puzzles to be solved. There’s also much of the same warm humour found in previous Lego games that really adds to Lego Indy’s appeal.

Lego Indiana Jones may not be the deepest or most memorable games but it genuinely offers that old cliché: fun for all the family. The bright Lego world makes it appealing to children while the gameplay is engaging and challenging enough to make it a worthwhile choice for a seasoned gamer. For a fun nostalgia trip you can even play with the whole family thanks to great co-op multiplayer option.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues Review

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues Review

Platform: XBOX, PS3, Wii, DS, PC, PSP

Publisher: LEGO

Developer: TT

As James May has proved this year, there’s just something about the old classic toys. It’s hard to imagine Captain Slow doing a follow-up series 25 years down the line to build a giant Go Go Hamster or, indeed, a Ben 10 Alien Force Kevins DX Action Cruiser, whatever the hell that is.

You can, though, imagine him doing another programme on LEGO, because LEGO has charm. LEGO has, well, legs. It’s as accessible as toys get: give anyone a few bricks and within a few seconds they’ll have stuck them together in a variety of combinations. But LEGO have also been canny and, while they’ve maintained the beautiful simplicity of their original product, they’ve also moved forward.

Take this year’s predicted Top Ten of Christmas Toys, for example. Alongside the zappy noisy flashy things, there’s something called LEGO’s Minotaurus, which combines board game with the standard brick building. It’s a neat twist on the company’s conventional product range and demonstrates some sharp thinking in the boardroom. It’s also educational but shush, don’t tell the kids that…

There’s better evidence of LEGO’s nous over in the electronics department. Video games and educational building toys are not an obvious marriage but someone, somewhere deserves a big bonus for spotting LEGO’s potential, marrying it to assorted movie franchises and bringing it all to a console near you.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues Review

Star Wars was great, Indiana Jones and Batman were better. All were creative, good natured, laugh-out-loud funny, smart and challenging. In 2010 we’re going to get LEGO Harry Potter (I believe the word that springs to mind is “woot”). And in the meantime we’ve got… Oh. Right. It’s Indy. Again.

The game is mostly based around The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth Indy film and the one that didn’t get covered in the previous game. Don’t let that put you off though. This game might be entitled “The Adventure Continues” but that’s only part of the story as, alongside the proper, in-depth, tongue-in-cheek take on Crystal Skull (which is probably better than the film itself), the makers have also returned to the first three films.

Some developers would just polish the old game. LEGO have rebuilt them with entirely new content and new challenges. Even the navigation is different. Instead of the central college-themed hub, each movie now gets its own, themed, central point, and even these are packed with areas to explore, puzzles to solve and things to collect.

Better than that, they’ve tweaked the two-player mode in brilliant fashion. No longer are you required to be in the same area of the map. If one player wants to wander off, they can, and the split screen dividing line automatically becomes a “compass” so you can find each other quickly if there’s a puzzle that needs solving. It’s a genius touch and you can expect many games to copy it in months to come.

Better than that though is the level builder. It might seem slightly daft to celebrate a game that allows you to play with virtual LEGO when you could play with the real thing, but this is beautifully crafted stuff. You can build simple levels, you can build incredibly complex, booby-trapped levels. Either way, you’ll learn the necessary skills in less than a minute, thanks to an instinctive, and flexible, system that makes Little Big Planet look like a degree in advanced architecture.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues Review

In gaming terms, the delightful LEGO Indiana Jones 2 is about as far removed from the blood-splattering big sellers as you can get. The clever thing about it though is you don’t really notice. For all its funky graphics and friendly colours, this isn’t just a kids game: the depth of the puzzles and challenges frequently requires some serious thought.

It’s also a game that requires and encourages repeat play, with secret levels and ongoing challenges that can only be accessed when you’ve completed other stages and unlocked certain characters. You can certainly zap through it and enjoy it at surface level. But if you put the time in, you’ll get even greater rewards.

With this, and LEGO Rock Band, their massively enjoyable take on the guitar wielding genre, LEGO (and the brilliant chaps at Traveller’s Tales) have proven themselves to be right up there with the game world’s best. It would be nice now to see them take on other genres. They attempted a PS2 sports sim once before with not great results but seriously, how cool would LEGO FIFA be? Bring on the brick-crunching tackles! And what about LEGO Call of Duty? I want to see the bricks fly as my LEGO sniper takes out a LEGO paratrooper from several thousand metres…

Wireless Entertainment Pack (Kung Fu Panda, Lego Indiana Jones & Wireless Controller) £24.95 @ Zavvi [Xbox 360 Games]

Wireless Entertainment Pack (Kung Fu Panda, Lego Indiana Jones & Wireless Controller) £24.95 @ Zavvi [Xbox 360 Games]

For those of you looking for a great deal, or a Christmas present for the youngsters then look no further as the wireless entertainment pack has it all! With Lego Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and a wireless Xbox 360 controller, Christmas has certainly come early.

Zavvi are offering the cheapest price for The Wireless entertainment pack at £24.95. The next best price stands at £29.05 from Amazon.co.uk, which means you’re saving a few quid. If you were to individually buy Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure at £10 from Play, Kung Fu Panda £8.95 from Mymemory and a wireless Xbox Controller £19.44 from Amazon, then you’d be spending quite a bit more!

Lego Indiana Jones: Original adventures brings the mayhem and fun you’d expect to find in any Lego game nowadays, and mixes it with a large dose of action and adventure you’d want in Indiana Jones. Those familiar with the Lego Star wars Games should feel right at home with this one. It’s very similar to its predecessors, but there is an emphasis on the puzzles within Lego Indiana Jones. Each character has their own special abilities which will help aid the player in solving the puzzles. The cut scenes still retain their outlandish humour, and cooperative play is still extremely fun. And with the three Indiana Jones movies to play through, you’re not likely to tire of this hidden gem anytime soon!

Follow Po, an overweight panda, as he Kung Fus his way across thirteen different levels in a bid to stop an evil warrior from taking the legendary Dragon scroll. Kung Fu Panda is not surprisingly targeted to a younger age group, with its friendly approach to beating the crap out of things. It does a good job of mixing platforming, combat and exploration which will keep the player occupied for a bit. But unfortunately it won’t last long, with a gamer able to complete it quickly at least two or three times. One of the most notable things about Kung Fu Panda is how it looks. The colours, physics and general graphics are great and really help improve the overall gameplay. The sound is also top notch and helps bring the cinematic experience of the movie to the game. If you’re looking for something to pick up and play quickly then this is it.

The Wireless controller will be a great addition to the family as most games are best played with a friend. If you’re planning on playing cooperative on Lego Indiana Jones then you’ll need one of these. It’s always useful to have a spare controller if, heaven forbid, something should happen to the other one. Featuring 2.4 GHZ technology the controller is totally wireless, so no tripping over the cable anymore! You can use it up to thirty feet away and includes an integrated headset port.Wireless Entertainment Pack (Kung Fu Panda, Lego Indiana Jones & Wireless Controller) £24.95 @ Zavvi [Xbox 360 Games]

From New 360 Hardware To Swedish Metallers Opeth: News Roundup 17th July

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer announces more hardware innovations will be coming to Xbox 360 in the next few years in today’s news roundup.  Also, NPD shows gaming is in decline, Lego Indiana Jones does a Little Big Planet, and Swedish metal band Opeth confirm Saints row for the PSP!

Project Natal The First In Several Hardware Innovations

From New 360 Hardware To Swedish Metallers Opeth: News Roundup 17th July

Phil Spencer announced Microsoft have several planned hardware innovations that could potentially rule out the possibility of a next-generation Xbox 360, Project Natal being just one of these.  “It’s not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it’s about evolving the platform continuously” according to Spencer, using hardware related items to do this.  Speculation has pointed towards a new peripheral in the works, but nothing can be confirmed until Microsoft feels ready.  [OXM]

Lego Indiana Jones To Get Level Creation Tools

From New 360 Hardware To Swedish Metallers Opeth: News Roundup 17th July

Little Big Planet was praised for its in-depth level creation, and the variety in level design it offered players.  The ability to construct levels however you want seems to be appealing, as Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues has included level creation tools this time around.

Allowing two players to create levels simultaneously through co-op play, it should be relatively straight forward, the complexity of level design being a point of criticism of Little Big Planet.   Lego Indiana Jones will be swinging in shops this November.  [Joystiq]

Future of Gaming In Decline

From New 360 Hardware To Swedish Metallers Opeth: News Roundup 17th July

NPD has revealed June showed much better software and hardware sales in comparison to a rather weak May.  May showed an overall decrease in console sales, and only four titles sold more than 200,000 units.  In June the DS showed easily the biggest increase in hardware terms, selling 133,000 more systems in June than May, with sale totals twice the amount of the next biggest selling console, the Wii.

The PS3 had its best month sales wise since March, selling 164,700 systems.  Despite these positive sales, comparing sales to last year shows a rather bleak future.  NPD analyst Anita Frazier wrote “the video games industry realized a significant decline when compared to June 2008, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines”, adding “this level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry”.  Sales are now more affected on a monthly basis, with big games now having a much bigger effect on console sales, Prototype and UFC an example of this in June.  [1UP]

Metal Band Opeth Confirm Saints Row PSP

From New 360 Hardware To Swedish Metallers Opeth: News Roundup 17th July

Progressive metal band Opeth has announced on their website the PSP will be getting Saints Row, before anyone in the gaming world even had a clue.  Scandinavian metal bands are unlikely to be your first choice for the latest gaming news, but in this case you should probably take their word.

Posting on their website “We may not like playing video games all that much but we do like it when our music is featured on them! Makes us a bit proud even when it’s a game as big as Saints Row for the PSP”, going on to confirm a release date of March 2010.  [Kotaku]

Lego Indiana Jones – The Original Adventures £8.73 @ The Hut [Xbox 360 Game]

Lego Indiana Jones The Original Adventures £8.73 @ The Hut [Xbox 360 Game]

Fans of the tongue – in – cheek Lego game series or anyone whose love for Indiana Jones has been revived by the recent new film should check out this deal being offered up by The Hut. They are offering Indiana Jones The original Adventures on Xbox 360 for the price of £8.73. That’s a nice saving considering the game is currently up on Amazon for over £11.

Like its predecessors Lego Star Wars and Batman, Indiana Jones follows a similar theme. You smash through the levels solving various puzzles to acquire Lego studs and reducing anyone who gets in your way to a pile of plastic rubble.

The game consists of 18 episodes which span across all three of the Jones feature films from Raiders of the Lost Ark to The Last Crusade. Curiously the new film ‘The Crystal Skull’ does not really get a look in (probably because by all accounts it’s totally rubbish!) so that’s probably an added bonus.

But overall Lego Indiana Jones is regarded as another top edition to the franchise.  One of the best things about the Lego games is the fact that they have such a broad appeal. Old time fans of the Jones films will love the way that the characters, settings and storylines have all had a really quirky Lego style make over.

However at the same time, the Lego veneer means the game is also suitable for very young children. Some of the darker elements to the Jones films have been toned down. The violence is all in Lego terms; there’s no blood, gore or even any Nazis!

So it caters for all age groups and is a perfect game for the whole family. It has a co – op mode which allows everyone to play together. So if you’re fed up with maiming people on GTA and are looking for a stress – free, fun and laid back kind of game Lego Indiana Jones is certainly a top choice!
