Lost Planet 3 Review | Put It On Ice

Platforms: PS3 (reviewed) | Xbox 360 | PC

Developer: Spark Unlimited

Publisher: Capcom

After the slightly frosty reception the thawed out first sequel received, it would seem the Lost Planet series has been pining for those long cold winters again. So the third game is a prequel to the original, taking place many years before.

You are Jim, red-haired (finally!) and awesomely bearded-up for the cold. Jim has a wife and newborn son back on earth, but he's taken this job on the frozen rock of E.D.N. III to earn some serious money as a Rig operator / go-to guy for exterminating the pesky Akrid wildlife while the NEVEC Corporation searches the planet for T-Energy.

Rather than the Vital Suits of the last two games, you get to romp around in a 50-foot high walking Rig. These huge mechs are essentially maintenance machines, hardly built for combat, but as you and Jim will find out, you're stuck with what you have.

Lost Planet 3 Review | Put It On Ice

Mechs are meant to be exciting. These rigs are making a play for dullest in class though. Limited to melee attacks like swinging arms, grabbing, blocking and a drill attacks, you'll really miss those rockets and machine guns.

Lost Planet 3 Trailer Fights To Survive

The latest trailer for Lost Planet 3 presents a monologue delivered by protagonist Jim Peyton, whose harsh life as a colonial miner becomes a lot harsher with the resurgence of the monstrous Akrid. It's surprisingly bleak stuff for a series that has previously prided itself on destroying legions of bugs in enormous mechs, but we're assured that mechanised bug destruction will still play a key role in the Western-developed sequel.

Lost Planet 3 releases on August 30th for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

We love mechs. Have we mentioned that? Well, we do. What's not to love about jumping into a giant robot and bringing the rain?

That's why we've actually got a bit of a soft spot for this gameplay video for Lost Planet 3.

The game itself releases on August 30th here in Europe, and August 27th in the US, arriving on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. [via AGB]

Lost Planet 3 Confirmed For June In New Trailer

Lost Planet 3 holds a "dangerous secret" if the latest cinematic-packed (gameplay-light) trailer is anything to go by, but at least the launch date is no longer secret. Capcom have confirmed that the outsourced shooter will release on June 28th for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The Lost Planet series has never quite managed to live up to its potential despite plenty of excellent mechs to control, so we hope that Spark Unlimited can redeem themselves for the likes of Legendary and Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty.

Lost Planet 3 Gets Massive Gameplay Walkthrough

Though we're far more interested in the cel-shaded, fun-focused E.X. Troopers (localise it for the West, dammit Capcom!), a whopping ten-minute walkthrough for Spark Unlimited's Lost Planet 3 has caught our attention. This narrated slab of gameplay shows off combat, new enemies and mecha brawls, and it certainly looks good from a graphical standpoint.

Game's out in 2013.

E.X. Troopers Channelling The "Party Game" Aspects Of Lost Planet 2

According to Lost Planet executive producer Kenji Ohguro, via Lost Planet 3 producer Andrew Szymanski's translation, the upcoming E.X. Troopers exists because the developers on Lost Planet 2 weren't able to successfully marry up the gritty story and the "festival atmosphere" created by the game's multiplayer.

Lost Planet 3 Coming In 2013

The news from Captivate is that Lost Planet 3 is coming, and it's set to arrive next year. An announcement trailer has surfaced a little early, featuring a monster chase, some typical snowy action shots, and a big fat mech.

However, this third apparently won't be developed in-house at  the previous two, instead Spark Unlimited, the developers behind Legendary: The Box and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, are taking the reins.
