Gigantic Army brings sidescrolling mech carnage to Steam today (watch our Let's Play!)

As a fan of sidescrolling shooters and all things mech-related, Gigantic Army absolutely scratched my itch for insane destruction when it released last month. Nyu Media have localised their best doujin (Japanese indie) game to date, providing a no-holds-barred mechanical romp of suitably gigantic proportions. I'm delighted to report that, following a successful Greenlight campaign, it will be available on Steam from 18:00 this evening (costing £3.99). You'll get a Steam code free of charge if you already bought it.

You can read our 8/10 editor's choice review for more details - and watch me absolutely fail to play it and provide useful commentary in our embedded Let's Play video above.

Mmmmm... mechs. Armored Core: Verdict Day has gotten itself a new trailer that pulses with industrial electronica, and features plenty of snapshots of mechs blowing one another to smithereens.

"Come heavy, or not at all" seems to be the motto once again. And that suits us just fine.

Armored Core: Verdict Day Coming To Europe

Screenshot Barrage Incoming!

Namco Bandai have confirmed that Armored Core: Verdict Day will be bringing all manner of mechanised rain to Europe this Autumn. As a direct sequel to Armored Core V, players will be able to bring their existing save files, customised mechs and squads into the new experience, which will challenge pilots to toe the line between "survival and complete annihilation."

From Software have spoiled us with what can only be described as a buttload of screenshots showing off massive war machines killing each other (as a fan of all things mecha, I need to go and lie down). Check them out - along with more details - below.

This week, Carl tells us all about his adventures in the Hawken beta, we discuss the potential of "triple-A free-to-play", and we strip apart Treyarch's return with a Call of Duty game that, would you believe it, tries to make a few changes to the iterative formula.

Strike Suit Zero Successfully Kickstarted

It's nice when a plan comes together. Strike Suit Zero, the ambitious space/mech sim from Guildford-based Born Ready Games, has concluded its Kickstarter campaign at 174% funding. Raising $174,804 in total should allow the British studio to polish up and ship out a seriously polished space shooter, ably assisted by the mech designer who worked on Appleseed and Infinite Space.

Strike Suit Zero is slated to launch on PC in early 2013.

Hawken Beta Extended From November 8th-13th

The first closed beta for Hawken wrapped up earlier this week, but Meteor Entertainment have announced that there's to be another beta session running from this evening through to November 13th.

If you dropped us an email and participated the first time round, you should be able to login and get going without any difficulties. If you do have issues, though, uninstall the original client and then reinstall it again.

We still have plenty of beta codes left, so if the idea of stomping around in a fat mech and blowing up your friends appeals, then do drop us an email at [email protected] and we'll help you get set up as soon as possible.

GIVEAWAY! Grab Yourself A Hawken Beta Code, Win A T-Shirt!

I rather wish that the Oculus Rift demo I was privy to at Gamescom hadn't been Doom 3: BFG. I rather wish it had been this instead. Free to play, FPS, mech-wielding, badassery? Yes please, and with a side of mind-melting visuals that would have been perfect.

Probably for the best though; I had lots of interviews that day, and being turned into a stupified wreck due to awesomeness might not have been ideal.

Anyway, we're rather excited for the arrival of Hawken this winter, and so are Adhesive and Meteor. So excited, in fact, that they want a bunch of you to play it early and tell them what you think. We've managed to get our hands on a few hundred beta code keys for a beta play session lasting from November 4th-6th.

To nab a beta key for play session starting this Sunday all you need to do is drop us a line to [email protected] with "Hawken Beta" in the title and we'll send you a key.

Here's what to do once you've received it:

  • Go to http://playhawken.com/enlist
  • Create your account
  • Enter your beta key code in the REDEEM CODE field
  • Follow Download instructions.
  • Log on in the beta session window: November 4th-6th

Furthermore, the first 100 to sign up for the beta will be placed into a random draw to win one of three Hawken t-shirts, so get those requests in sharpish!

Here are a few training vids to help prepare for what is to come. We'll be jumping into the fray as well on Sunday, so we'll see you on the battlefield.

Have A Couple of Helpful Hawken Training Videos

Starting this evening, we'll be running a large giveaway for a couple of hundred Hawken beta codes for this coming weekend's session. We've had our eye on Meteor and Adhesive's F2P mech shooter for some time, and we're pretty damn excited about it.

However, getting to  grips with a giant mechanical suit of robotic battle ordinance can be a little tricky at times. Thankfully, though the developers have dropped a couple of videos to help newcomers become accustomed to the game.

Strike Suit Zero Seeks Extra Development Time With Kickstarter Campaign

Strike Suit Zero, the indie space/mech sim from Born Ready Games and the mechanical designer behind Appleseed, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise enough money to stay in development a while longer. Apparently the extra time will allow the project to "reach its full potential."

You can find details on both the game and Kickstarter after the break.

Liberation Maiden Review | Mecha Politics!

Platform: 3DS (eShop)

Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture

Publisher: Level-5

Some would say that we've lost faith in our politicians these days. In an age where strife and scraping by has become the norm for many of us, it's easy to feel out of touch with those in power, who arguably need to perform a grand gesture to win back some of the trust lost in recent years.

So perhaps Cameron, Clegg, Obama and Romney should follow Shoko Ozora's example. Upon being elected, the new president of Japan's first duty is to protect her citizens... by strapping into an enormous Liberator mech and taking to the skies, raining neon destruction down upon ravening robotic hordes and acting as a beacon of hope to the electorate as she flashes overhead, guns blazing. News networks cover her accomplishments live with interviews and press releases, with her advisors scurrying to spin her victories as quickly as possible. This is the bleeding edge of politics... Suda51 style.

Goichi Suda's debut 3DS game is the first of three downloadable eShop titles from Level-5, an exciting initiative that plans to bring new and exciting experiences to Nintendo's handheld. As a tight and responsive 3D mech shooter, Liberation Maiden is already a cut above practically everything else on the virtual shopfront, but can it stack up to the best games on PSN and XBLA?

Suit Up For Space Combat In Strike Suit Zero Trailer

Space combat is set to return in a big way courtesy of Strike Suit Zero, a stylish action-heavy title from Born Ready Games. Piloting the titular strike suit (which has both mech and fighter modes), we'll lead "massive fleets" into battle in the wild black yonder. Inspirations apparently include X-Wing and Freespace, with aesthetics taking a leaf out of Homeworld's book.

Yes please. Strike Suit Zero is slated to release this year on PC, followed by PSN and XBLA versions in 2013.

Front Mission Evolved | £3.20 | GamersGate | PC

I must admit to losing my cool during last year's full review of Front Mission Evolved - but only because it could have been great. A capable arcadey mech sim lurks at the core of the package, but it's trapped within a truly awful storyline, terrible voice acting and dated level design. There's fun to be had here, though it's tempered by disappointment.

Still, the PC version is nice and cheap thanks to a this latest deal (you'll save £4) - and Front Mission Evolved is definitely worth this lower price. Be aware that finding an online game could be tricky, though, especially against opponents who aren't already rocking unbalanced Wanzer builds.

Armored Core V | £12.95 | Zavvi | PS3 & Xbox 360

Matt describes Armored Core V as "probably the best game in the series to date" in our full review. It's full of great big mechs to customise and wreck stuff up with, blending offline and online functionality with an intriguing new teamwork mechanic. Zavvi has the best price around by our reckoning, and this may be the sub-£20 breakthrough you've been waiting for. Thanks to the aptly-named ChuckNorris HotUKDeals.

Iron Brigade Stomping Over To Steam

Double Fine's mech shooter/tower defence hybrid Iron Brigade will be available on Steam from August 13th, including the Rise Of The Martian Bear expansion as a free bonus. We rather liked it on XBLA, and here's hoping that a Steam release will help create a lasting multiplayer base.

I must admit to losing my cool during last year's full review of Front Mission Evolved - but only because it could have been great. A capable arcadey mech sim lurks at the core of the package, replete with in-depth customisation and immediate action. Unfortunately this core is trapped within a truly awful storyline, terrible voice acting and dated level design... and a bizarre design decision that sees you frequently running around on foot for no good reason.

Still, the PC version is nice and cheap thanks to a GamersGate deal - and Front Mission Evolved is definitely worth this lower price. Be aware that finding an online game could be tricky, though, especially against opponents who aren't already rocking unbalanced Wanzer builds.
