MechWarrior Online Review | World Of Wanzers

Platform: PC (F2P)

Developer: Piranha Games

Publisher: Infinite Game Publishing

There's nothing quite like stomping around in an enormous bipedal tank, crushing our foes under tons of steel plate while blasting out more ordnance than an entire armoured column. We used to look to BattleTech and MechWarrior for our fix, whether on a tabletop or glued to our monitors, but the troubled franchise has forced us to go elsewhere over the last few years, to the likes of Armored Core and Hawken. We've had it pretty good, but we still pine for our Mad Cats and Bushwackers. Thankfully, a new hope has finally arrived in the form of MechWarrior Online... and it's free.

MechWarrior Online has a lot in common with Wargaming's World Of Tanks, in that it's a free to play simulation-lite that hinges around constantly improving a colossal war machine and using it to destroy your foes in team-based multiplayer matches. After an extensive beta, Piranha Games' project finally hit v.1.0 last week, meaning that we're clear to strap in, power up the reactor and put it through its paces.

Before we begin, we do have to acknowledge a little unpleasantness. Infinite Game Publishing came under intense fire for disingenuous communication and community management throughout the lengthy beta process, which in turn lead to massive fan backlash over the last few months. However, this is a review, and thus will focus exclusively on the finished article and the new player experience. Know this going in.

MechWarrior Online hit v.1.0 last night, following a year of open beta that has seen several improvements, some setbacks and a huge amount of controversy surrounding poor communication between Infinite Game Publishing and founder member players. Either way, the free to play multiplayer mech game is ready for action, and you can set up an account here.

This also means that MWO is now fair game for critique. We'll bring you a full review soon.

MechWarrior Online Gets Spider Infestation & Double XP Event

Spider-Mech, Spider-Mech, does whatever a spider... wait a minute. Two legs? What a rip-off. Disappointing lack of legs notwithstanding, the newest mech to grace MechWarrior Online packs eight jumpjets and massive agility to run rings around slower opponents.

MWO's The first double XP weekend is also imminent, set for this Friday. We've got more details below.

New MechWarrior Online Trailer Delivers Death You Can't Even See

"Death You Can't Even See" is the alias for the most recently showcased piece of delicious mech-related armaments in MechWarrior Online. GameTrailers have gone large with a video of the Catapult C1. Surprisingly manoeuvrable for a Heavy Mech, it's designed to sit beyond the range of an enemy's guns, and obliterate all foes with copious missiles.

For those who played MechAssault, River City was one of the most memorable online maps, and Piranha Games plan to pay homage to it in MechWarrior Online. This new trailer gives us a tour of the once-beautiful town, which is now an abandoned ruin playing host to tense and explosive battles. A mix of sniper roosts, open plains and claustophobic street fights should make this an interesting arena once MechWarrior Online releases later this year.

It will be free to play, but you can optionally register for the Founder's Program before September 6th. This will give you immediate access to the closed beta, 1-3 months of Premium account membership and some nifty decals depending on which tier you select (and how much you're willing to pay).

MechWarrior Online: Meet The Hunchback

Piranha Games have given The Hunchback the trailer treatment: a 50 ton killing machine with a gun so big it actually restricts the pilot's view. Instead of providing us with tech specs, they've annotated the trailer like crazy.

MechWarrior Online will feature numerous classic mechs as well as some newcomers when it launches later this year as a free to play shooter.

MechWarrior Online: Meet The Jenner
Free-to-play mech sim MechWarrior Online will feature walking tanks for every taste and playstyle when it releases later this year. Having already seen the Catapult, Vulture, Atlas and Centurion in action, it's time for something a little lighter - this week, Piranha Games have showcased the Jenner. These super-light mechs are best suited for skirmishing and pack-hunting; running rings around the heavier opposition. We've got a new trailer and deliciously geeky BattleTech specs below.

As a fan of all things mech as well as the franchise, I will officially lose it when Piranha Games get around to unveiling the Mad Cat/Timber Wolf.

MechWarrior Online Caustic Valley Vid Heats Things Up

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the valley. MechWarrior Online, as is the case with all MechWarrior games, hinges around the dispersal and management of heat - which governs how players will load out their walking tanks.  This latest trailer showcases a truly hostile map that will push our heat sinks to the limit, along with some impressive-looking gameplay.

This free-to-play online shooter from Piranha Games is currently in closed beta, and expected to release this year.

MechWarrior Online: Meet The Centurion

MechWarrior Online has revealed the Centurion: an incredibly well-rounded mech with versatile loadouts that can excel in any situation. I'm more of a Madcat/Timberwolf man myself, but if it's bipedal and armoured, I'll probably give it a whirl.

MWO will be rolling out on PC later this year as a Free To Play multiplayer shooter - perhaps attempting to provide a more gratuitous alternative to World Of Tanks?

MechWarrior Online Gets New No-Frills Trailer

Do you really need the pulsing bass of Nero, or the twisted beats of Skillrex to sell a game? Not according to Piranha Games, who've just dropped a rather satisfying new trailer for their upcoming F2P title MechWarrior Online which gives us the only good stuff we need: in-game footage of massive mechs fighting it out!

At the end of the day, we just want to see massive weaponised leviathans battling it out in a thunderdome of metal mayhem. And that's just what we get...

MechWarrior Online Might Just Make You Cry... Engine

Piranha Plumps For Crysis 2 Tech

The long-awaited next MechWarrior title - which, by the way, will be a free-to-play online affair - has taken yet another encouraging step forward in development, with developers Piranha Games opting for Crytek's CryEngine 3 tech to power their robot-battering visuals. The news comes from Crytek themselves, who've been securing a number of engine partnerships of late as the company looks to emulate Epic's success with their own titular engine.

It's great news, especially when you consider you won't be paying a single penny to appreciate those visuals. According to Crytek, MechWarrior Online is a "step up to offer true AAA quality to gamers". Set for release on PC in 2012, its the first MechWarrior title in almost ten years. As for Crytek's CryEngine 3, the company claims over 20 other free-to-play titles in development have plumped for their tech, including their own title Warface. [Eurogamer]

MechWarrior Online Finally Announced... And Free To Play!

Piranha Games and Infinite Game Publishing have finally officially announced their MechWarrior reboot... and revealed that it will be free to play. MechWarrior Online will be the first officially licensed free-to-play title in the dormant (and long-missed) franchise, and is primed to launch in the second half of 2012. This ties in with the recent revelations that the project would be a PC exclusive as opposed to a suspected multiplatform release.

Set in the year 3049 during the early stages of a massive interstellar war, MechWarrior Online puts you in command of the most powerful war machine to ever walk the field of battle: the mighty BattleMech. Players will be able to lead their and upgrade their mechs in a "dynamic and ever-changing universe." We've got more details after the break.
