PSA: Defiance is finally free to play on Xbox 360

It took long enough, but Defiance is finally free-to-play on Xbox 360, making the ambitious multi-platform MMORPG shooter free on all platforms after making the transition on PC and PS3. Though saddled with a rubbish TV series and some design issues, we actually found Defiance to be an absolute blast (well, Matt hated it) and a game that was a fun enough shooter to carry its weaker elements. Excellent instanced missions and crazy random flashmob boss battles really helped to give Defiance game a solid backbone.

Carl's in-depth Defiance review still holds true, but there have been numerous content updates and patches over the last few years, meaning that there's a lot of game here costing absolutely nothing. You could do a lot worse than giving it a go. Thanks and credit to sweetnugget @ HUKD for bringing this to our attention!

The Crew is utterly enormous in scope and ambitious in scale, but with so many moving parts, there's a lot to take in. It's an 'MMO driving experience' in a massive open world with numerous events, a storyline, factions, exploration, progression, 'shared-world' multiplayer and unlockable cars to consider. How will it work? Will it work at launch, given Ubisoft's track record with Uplay and PC?

Luckily Creative Director Julian Gerighty was on hand for a lengthy interview.

Stay tuned for our detailed hands-on preview later today!

Firefall has fixed its killer flaw in time for overdue launch

Remember Firefall? After years of development hell, numerous changes of direction, high-profile firings and a slide into obscurity, Red 5's massively multiplayer shooter is finally coming out of beta on July 29th. The patch notes are very promising indeed, adding new 'open world PvP,' campaign missions and enemies into the mix.

However, it also appears that Red 5 have finally corrected the one major flaw holding back their jet-boot enabled cooperative romp, which previously crippled the experience in a profoundly damaging way.

The Elder Scrolls Online schools Titanfall, inFamous & MGS in the UK charts

The Elder Scrolls Online may have attracted plenty of controversy over the last year or so, but it's clear that legions of fans are seizing the opportunity to return to Tamriel. Zenimax' new MMORPG has launched straight into second place in the UK, despite only releasing on PC and requiring monthly subscriptions after the first 30 days. Matt has emerged fairly impressed from his first few days in the saddle, finding all the extra players more social than immersion-breaking. He'll deliver our full review in due time, ahead of the planned PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Sadly, TESO couldn't beat FIFA 14, which we're sick and tired of seeing in the charts. Yawn.

The bickering between inFamous: Second Son and Titanfall has shifted gears yet again, with Respawn's refreshing shooter climbing back above its PS4-exclusive nemesis, which drops from first to sixth. Dark Souls II and Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney continue their descent down the charts. We've got the full UK top ten after the break.

Firefall Double Crystite Event Now Live

If you're at a loose end this weekend, it's probably high time you logged onto Firefall, the free-to-play MMO shooter offering cel-shaded jetpack rampages. A double resource weekend is now in full swing, along with a major patch that makes it easier to access new areas and mini-narratives to enjoy.

Details after the break. You can get involved for free right here, though be aware that the confusing crafting system is still a source of major infuriation.

Firefall Open Beta First Impressions | Jumpjet Joyrides & Crafting Confusion

Firefall, the massively multiplayer class-based shooter from Red 5, entered open beta last week, so naturally we've quickly fired up our oversized jet boots and boosted into the action. The cel-shaded world full of dangerous critters and rampaging squads of nightmarish cyborgs is now available to explore and conquer, with anyone able to sign up for free and get involved. PvE and PvE are fully supported, featuring plenty to see and do (and kill) without having to spend a single penny.

Our resident MMO specialist Carl, will likely be taking a closer look at the juicy details following an in-depth exploration of the closed beta ... but as a relative newcomer to the franchise, I'm taking the opportunity to discuss my three main initial observations of Firefall from a new player's perspective.

Red 5's effort is definitely fun and engaging, but its reliance on an outrageously convoluted crafting system could well become a major sticking point.

Firefall Is Fun

Firefall Open Beta First Impressions | Jumpjet Joyrides & Crafting Confusion

A basic observation, but it needs to be made. Despite having many features in common with MMORPGs, Red 5 have consistently reminded us that Firefall is a fast-paced shooter first and foremost; an accessible team-based experience built around airborne combat and moment-to-moment cooperation. Forget tab targeting, because you'll primarily interact with Firefall's world via the barrel of a pleasingly oversized gun.

MMO shooter Firefall is currently in open beta, so if you want to get an overall feel for the story and setting, Red 5 Studios' new trailer is well worth watching. It's an interesting class-based open world shooter with heavy MMORPG elements and jetpacks, so if that sounds like fun, you can freely get involved here.

Note that the beta is more of a soft launch, seeing as microtransactions have been implemented and apparently there won't be any more character wipes. And, erm, it's a bit broken, but improving daily.

EVE Online: Massive In-Game Heist Sees Spy Destroy Corporation, Make Billions Of ISK

EVE Online is one of the most brilliant and terrifying games ever developed, because it's almost completely run by player-driven corporations and full of real human drama. The latest major disasterpiece comes in the form of a single player managing to take down one of these corporations from within before making off with billions of in-game currency.

Bear in mind that all of this is 100% legal, happened within the confines of the game itself, required no hacking, wasn't an exploit and simply came down to genuine clever espionage and manipulation of the in-game stock market.

Dust 514 Review | Shaky War Economy
Platforms: PS3

Developer: CCP

Publisher: CCP

We’ve spoken at great length regarding our respect for the online experience that is EVE Online. Its relentlessly hardcore and incredibly niche approach to the MMO genre has been admired by many for the player-driven nature of the game, but despite several updates the galaxy of New Eden filled with intrigue, adventure and conspiracy continues to be a rather impenetrable beast for newcomers. DUST 514 aims to rectify this problem with its FPS gameplay and free-to-play business model, but does the Playstation 3 exclusive succeed? We will of course get to that, but first let’s give a quick overview for those not yet acquainted with how it all fits together.

In EVE Online, the pilots of ships (known as Capsuleers) are immortal thanks to a technologically advanced cloning process that has remained exclusive to them – until now. Mercenary soldiers have been given access to the death-defying technology, and this is where DUST players come in by acting as guns for hire. The idea is that while the intergalactic wars of EVE rage on, and the corporations fight for control of planets and installations, DUST players are called in to fight on behalf of the Capsuleers who in turn can provide support via the donation of money or aerial bombardments. It is a grand idea that could only have come from the creators of EVE Online, and one that, on paper, is a brilliant marriage of hardcore gameplay with more casual elements.

But, as we often discover with many elaborate game designs, it is the execution that is everything, and DUST 514 only gets is half right.
