Indie Developers "Unimpressed" By Xbox One Reveal, But Hopeful For E3 Turnaround

"It's Not A Good Portent For Gaming Goodness To Come"

Dealspwn.com has heard from several high-profile independent developers (including Cthulhu Saves The World creator Robert Boyd and ex-Insomniac weapon designer Nathan Fouts) who are worried about Microsoft's perceived focus on entertainment and lack of support for self-publishing indie developers following the Xbox One reveal event.

That said, they all also suggest that we won't know the whole story until June 10th.

Serious Sam: Double D XXL Review | Double Your Fun!

Platform: XBLA (800 MSP)

Developer: Mommy's Best Games

When it comes right down to it, Serious Sam is all about big guns and an obscenely vast horde of bad guys to point them at. Croteam's irreverent series resonated with gamers sick of hand-holding and cumbersome exposition, instead focusing on outrageous action and the brutal joy of blasting entire armies into sticky smears on the scenery. "Serious" Sam Stone is a little like Duke Nukem in terms of his one-liners and hatred of all things extraterrestrial, but unlike the ageing playboy, he delivers on his promises.

So when it came to crunching Serious Sam down into an indie sidescroller, there was only one developer for the job. Mommy's Best Games.

Serious Sam: Double D XXL Review | Double Your Fun!

Or more specifically, Nathan Fouts. The veteran weapons designer behind Resistance: Fall Of Man and Ratchet & Clank is a dab hand at crafting insanely imaginative boomsticks, and racked up plenty of experience in creating ridiculous shooters during his indie career. A skillset that led to the launch of Serious Sam: Double D back in summer 2011, which brought reckless indie innovation and teetering piles of raw firepower to to Croteam's crazy formula.

Nearly two years on, and a brand new director's cut has finally made to Xbox Live Arcade. We've got co-op. New levels. Insane weapon upgrades. Fireball-spewing mecha kittens. Unicycle rampages. Serious Sam: Double D XXL might not be subtle nor profound, but it's an extra large portion of unadulterated stupid awesome.

The definitive version of Serious Sam: Double D releases next week on XBLA, and this gives us an eleventh hour look at what's new. Considering that we awarded the original indie shooter with 9/10 in our full review, the cooperative-supporting and feature-rich new XXL version is probably set to be an absolute corker.

Since this comes from one of the weapon designers behind Resistance and Ratchet & Clank, the title 'gun diary' has rarely been more appropriate.

Serious Sam: Double D Review | Big Fun, No Compromise!

Platform: PC (Reviewed) | Xbox 360 Version TBA

Developer: Mommy's Best Games

Publisher: Devolver Digital

Devolver Digital's decision to commission some veteran Independent developers to design their own unique take on the Serious Sam franchise was nothing less than a stroke of utter genius. It's fantastic brand publicity and a cynical PR coup, but more importantly, it has allowed the best weapons designer in the games industry to do what he does best. Nathan Fouts designed the guns for Ratchet & Clank and Resistance when he worked for Insomniac (and the gore mechanics from Postal 2 back in the day), and after developing several ridiculous games under his Mommy's Best Games boutique label, he's brought his love of innovative gameplay mechanics and balls-out fun to a series that already delivers an insane level of action.

After we got to play Serious Sam: Double D at E3, we've actually been as excited about it as we are for as Croteam's long-awaited Serious Sam 3. Excitement, as it turns out, that was thoroughly justified. Double D is one of the most ludicrously, graphically, biblically fun games that you'll play this year - fun that can only come from the ability to butcher your way through swathes of flying amputated monkeys, dinosaurs and exploding-chested cyberwomen with a teetering tower of outrageous firearms.

If you're looking for sweeping exposition and a thoughtful portrayal of the human condition then you've come to the wrong franchise. However, if you want your games to be ridiculously epic, Serious Sam: Double D might be the smartest purchase you'll make in 2011.

Mommy's Best Games doesn't do subtle.

Nathan Fouts, the veteran designer behind Ratchet & Clank's weaponry, Resistance's arsenal and the epic Postal series, left Insomniac games and founded his own boutique indie studio to pursue his love of independent development. He's the man you can rely on for sumptuous hand-drawn artwork, incredibly innovative boomsticks, ridiculous action, award-winning mechanics and truly worrying enemy design... and now he's been let loose on the anarchic Serious Sam license with free rein to do what he does best.

I'll be posting my full hands-on preview of Croteam's upcoming Serious Sam 3: BFE in the next couple of days... but frankly, we're just as excited for its downloadable companion.

Explosionade

indie-gotw-250x250If you crave big guns, huge explosions and twisted alien enemies, you need look no further than Mommy's Best Games. Nathan Fouts, the founder of the boutique developer, is a veteran weapon designer who previously worked for Insomniac Games. Resistance and Ratchet's arsenal owes everything to his (slightly worrying) imagination, but several years ago he left the triple-A developer to form his own Indie outfit. Weapon of Choice and Shoot 1UP already offer big budget thrills for a bargain price... and I'm delighted to report that Explosionade is an another excellent budget adventure that mixes retro gameplay with some fresh new mechanics.

The premise is simple and effective; told through text panels and simple animations that are reminiscent of classic 16-bit intros. A pudgy and useless soldier has been ordered to guard the supply shed rather than participate in the epic battle against the ravening Horronym... but stumbles across a prototype battlemech locked up in storage. Who wouldn't take it for a spin? Apart from the fact that it's great to see a lazy, overweight protagonist (hurray, finally!), the setup is a rich opportunity for a fair few gaffes, laffes and an amusing context for the action.
