NetherRealm: We Want To 'Do More Than Just Make Mortal Kombat'

NetherRealm Studios' studio head Ed Boon has been a bit cagey following his suggestion towards the end of last year that they were taking a break from Mortal Kombat and, but he has said in a recent interview that he'd "be surprised" if the studio never stepped back into the gloriously gory fray with their popular fighter. Mind you, that's not to say he and his team don't want to diversify.

Mortal Kombat PS Vita Launching In The Spring

Bid Your Vita-lity Farewell

The PS Vita launched in Japan last December, where it endured a rocky introduction to the market, outsold by its portable rival, the Nintendo 3DS, and failing to hit the figures Sony had hoped for. However, I don't doubt the Vita will soon find its feet, especially when it has a grip in North America and Europe, where it releases very soon. And expect to be ripping arms, legs and heads off on it in the Spring, when NetherRealm releases their still-in-development Mortal Kombat title on the Vita.

Xbox Live Christmas Deal Of The Day | MK Season Pass & Deadliest Warrior: Legends

On the fourth day of Christmas, the major gave to me...

... a season pass and Deadliest Warrior: Legends... bugger. That doesn't rhyme. Or scan. I can't do anything with that.

Anyway, for today only, Xbox 360 owners can grab the Mortal Kombat Season Pass for 600 Microsoft Points, as well as Deadliest Warrior: Legends for 400. Chances are that MK fans will have already snapped up the four downloadable characters, though it's worth noting that Deadliest Warrior: Legends manages to defy all expectations by actually being good. We really didn't see that coming.

Mortal Kombat

Earlier in the month, Tom brought you news of of new Mortal Kombat combatant Rain joining the roster. Well, no offense Rain; but you're arrival has just been bested, as Warner Bros. have announced classic cinema villain, Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, is set to slice and dice the rest of the MK cast in an upcoming DLC pack. Sadly, the developers appear to have plumped for the recent Samuel Bayer iteration rather than Wes Craven's classic depiction. No word on whether Robert Englund Jackie Early Hayley will provide maniacal vocals.

Mortal Kombat 5

If you saw my post last week, you'll know that Skarlet, Kenshi, and Rain, are all on their way to take part in the Mortal Kombat tournament on your consoles this summer, with every MK fan's favourite lady in red arriving first on 21st June. What you might not know is that a fourth mystery character'll be accompanying the named three warriors and instead of downloading them one at a time you can purchase them all at once thanks to the Mortal Kombat Season Pass that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are bringing out.

Mortal Kombat 3

If you're a Mortal Kombat fan, you've got to buy this game, and trust me you won't be disappointed. Challenging your friends to a couple of brawls and spilling a few pints of blood in the process, before finishing them with a gruesome fatality never gets old! The story mode should last you a fair while, for a fighting game, and it follows the plot of the original three games with a couple of changes here and there. Grabbing a copy on the PS3 or the Xbox'll cost you £30.85, but you'll be making a saving of almost £2 on the next best offer.

LA Noire 5

Well, surprise, surprise! LA Noire's jumped straight in at Number 1 in this week's UK Games Charts and my guess is that it'll stay in the top three for at least the next couple of weeks. Rockstar's Detective saga is jam packed full of content and I had a wicked time investigating away and busting criminals over the weekend! That's not to say it's a perfect game by any means, there are a couple of areas that could do with a bit of polish, but it's wonderful to see the story unfold before your eyes.

Silent Hotfix Patch Sorts Out Character Imbalance

The Playstation Network is now up and running - and to entice gamers into their online community, Netherrealm Studios has temporarily suspended their Online Pass system for Mortal Kombat. All players, pre-owned consumers or no, can now play Mortal Kombat online without the code, which has previously proven to be extremely controversial amongst series fans. After all, since the PSN store isn't open, there's no way that pre-owned customers can actually buy a pass even if they wanted to.

You'd better get your skates on though, because once the store reopens, the Online Passes will be reinstated. [Facebook]

UPDATE: Netherrealm have sneakily released a silent hotfix that puts paid to a number of character balance issues. Changelog after the jump.

Mortal Kombat

This is an excellent return to form for the Mortal Kombat series, and if you're a fan you should definitely get yourself a copy. The story mode is brilliant and goes over the events of the first three MK games, although there's a slight twist to the proceedings, thanks to a few messages that Raiden intercepts from the future. Also, the challenge tower'll keep you coming back for more, as will all of the unlockables. At the moment a copy of the game for the 360'll set you back £29.86 from ShopTo, which is over £2.50 cheaper than the next best offer.

Here’s a deal to highlight for the die-hard fans of the long running, and gory, fighting series. Game are currently offering the Kollector’s Edition for the series reboot, fetching you a saving of at least £10 (and even more if Gameplay continue to have their listing for this item broken!) So what do you get for your money’s worth? Along with the game you get a hand sculpted figurine of Scorpion and Sub-Zero, an art book, DLC to unlock different costumes in-game, and avatar costumes to customize your virtual representations in PSN Home or Xbox Live. It’s worth noting that the Xbox 360 version has a 2-3 day wait on delivery, but with it being the best price available by quite a margin it would definitely be worth the wait. Why We Love . . . Scorpion And Sub-Zero

why we love

Mortal Kombat's been out for a couple of weeks now and I have to say I'm LOVING it! Whilst sitting back on the sofa and pummelling my opponents into the ground in order to get to a delightful fatality, I started t0 think about my favourite characters in the series, the ones who I've also gotten a thrill out of taking into the ring since the very first instalment of the series. The two who stand out the most for me are Scorpion and Sub-Zero, sure Liu Kang and Johnny Cage can be fun in small doses, but I've always revelled in besting an opponent with the cool blue ninja and the resurrected yellow clad warrior. Also, lets not forget that both are wrapped up in a rather heavy storyline with one another.

Sub - Zero

I'll get things rolling by casting my gaze over my time with Sub-Zero. He's the first character in any fighting game that I bothered to learn all the moves for, mainly because I loved tormenting my friends as a kid by freezing them in place, laughing, and then knocking away a fair chunk of their health with a perfectly timed uppercut. To be honest though all of his moves are cool (pardon the pun), whether you're quickly sliding into your enemy's side, freezing the ground beneath their feet, or creating an ice clone to catch an unsuspecting opponent off guard, saving your skin for a few seconds.

Portal 2

zumba2

Wow, when it comes to us gamers, it seems that our drive for physical perfection is more powerful than our lust to expand our minds. Zumba Fitness, the multiplatform aerobic suite, reigns supreme once again thanks to PS3 sales pushing it back onto the top of the chart. It's unseated the reigning champion, Portal 2, which now resides in a worthy second place. Wii Fit Plus hasn't budged an inch: demonstrating our commitment to treating our bodies like the temples they are. And yet somehow I'm still a complete pie? Weird.

Michael Jackson: The Experience has moonwalked into the charts at number ten, but otherwise, the rest of the list contains the old familiar faces we've grown accustomed to over the last few weeks. Travellers Tales are still enjoying strong sales of Lego Star Wars III, and Operation: Flashpoint has sniped itself another week in the limelight. Why not check out our 7/10 review?

There's still no hint of a 3DS exclusive in the top ten - and even Miyamoto's pet submarine project Steel Diver is nowhere in the top forty.

Elsewhere in the charts, this week's new releases haven't enjoyed much in the way of success. The Last Templar has completely failed to chart - although the recently-released PS3 version of Sniper: Ghost Warrior has scored a headshot on number fifteen. Arguably because of its name.

Portal 2

It has been a very slow week for new games releases, and those that managed to sneak out have suffered due to the Royal Wedding celebration, street parties, bank holidays and good old fashioned malaise surrounding the PSN fiasco. Virtua Tennis 4 and the Thor movie tie-in haven't managed to get anywhere near the Top Ten, with SEGA's latest tennis game securing a meagre 23rd place and the film companion failing to dent the top forty.

Otherwise, the top ten remains pretty much how we left it last time we checked. Portal 2, Valve's 10/10 puzzler, has topped the chart for the second week running - and thoroughly deserves to in our humble opinion. Mortal Kombat has butchered its rivals to secure another worthy second place, and the omnipresent dance/exercise thingy Zumba Fitness enjoys yet another week in the top three (thanks in part to a new release on the PS3).

Operation Flashpoint: Red River is doing rather well. The realistic shooter has sniped, crawled and drove its way into fourth place, and we're delighted to see the series enjoying another week in the sun. Elsewhere, the same old faces take up the rest of the chart; including Black Ops, Lego Star Wars III, FIFA 11 and the controversial FPS Homefront.

I hope those THQ shareholders have finally calmed down.
