Is it just me, or would Naruto make for an epic multiplayer game or MMO where we can all create our own ninja and choose our own skills/ninjutsu? I'd be one of those puppeteers. Well, until my crazy dream comes true, Rise Of A Ninja is a pretty good place to start. Despite a fairly short story and some weird transitions between 2D and 3D gameplay, it's a solid game with plenty of varied mechanics. Using your ever-increasing powers to explore the city is a real rush, and the combat works extremely well.
The Xbox's stake in the obscenely and, frankly, bafflingly popular Naruto enterprise has seriously spoiled my fun by turning out to be a surprisingly decent game and now it can be yours for a mere £7.95 from The Game Collection. This is nearly £2 cheaper from the next best price.
The game is based pretty much entirely on the first three arcs of its animé counterpart and follows Naruto and his pals in Squad 7 through the various adventures that spawn from being a pupil of ninja school. These range from small friendly battles to exams to epic brawls.
I was bursting for an opportunity to make snarky comments but seeing as I have never played the game and it has been really rather well received for a title of this type it seems that my mockery must wait for the next Imagine title instead. Apparently Rise of a Ninja has gorgeous graphics that pay great homage to its animé origins and it's nice that all of the cast for the series have lent their voices to the characters in the game too. The gameplay is lots of fun and there is a very strong multiplayer that will keep you coming back long after you complete the single player mode. It turns out that the game is such a well made success that it may even appeal to those gamers who have never even heard of the series. Harrumph.
