Up to 70% off Need For Speed titles in the Gamersgate weekend sale

If you haven't picked up one of the latest Need For Speed titles then you're in luck. Gamersgate are holding a weekend sale for four instalments in the racing series, and it's a great chance to save a few pounds whilst putting the pedal to the metal.

The highlight of the bunch, and the best value for money, is clearly Need For Speed: Most Wanted with its vast open world and easy access to the best cars once you find them. Need For Speed Rivals didn't quite match up, but it's an enjoyable racer for the price listed in the sale. Otherwise, there's Hot Pursuit and ProStreet at a low price point, but unless you're a die-hard fan of the franchise it's probably best to skip those and get the other two instead.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit now £3.49 on Steam, Burnout Paradise: TUB just £1.24

There's a big fat EA racing sale going on over on Steam, and Hot Pursuit is probably the pick of the bunch. Of course, that all changes if you somehow don't own Burnout: Paradise, because The Ultimate Box is only £1.24. If you're only just dipping your toes into this sort of thing, definitely plump for Paradise.

Or you could buy the whole EA Racing Pack (Need for Speed Undercover, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Need for Speed: Shift, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Shift 2 Unleashed) for £13.74.

Need For Speed Sale Drifts Onto PSN

Sony are holding a Need For Speed promotion on the PSN store this week, including Most Wanted, The Run and Hot Pursuit. As far as I can tell, the only real deal is for the weakest of the three - a £3 saving for Need For Speed: The Run - but the ludicrous embarrassment of DLC has been discounted too if you've been holding off (and love wasting money).

Be aware that Need For Speed: Most Wanted is coming to the instant game collection today. Don't buy it, PS Plus subscribers!

Still, for any NFS superfans out there, we've got the details after the jump.

If you want a taste of what Criterion's epic looking NFS: Most Wanted is going to be like, then you should play Burnout: Paradise. Presuming you have good tastes and have already done so, you should turn your attentions to this, Criterion's first take on the NFS brand. Outpacing the cops is done better than ever before and provides a huge rush, the same goes for playing as the fuzz too. The single-player experience can be a little dull thanks to lots of straight roads, but take this online and it roars into life. Autolog keeps you competitive with your friends while playing cops and robbers is like rocking your own car-chase movie.

Hot Pursuit

Getting yourself into high speed chases with the police whilst your behind the wheel of a super car is what Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit's all about, and it's a nice nod back to the series' roots. It's also tougher than you might expect, which means that you'll really have to work hard to get all the gold rankings. You can pick up a copy of the game for the PC from either The Hut or Zavvi for £4.85, which is over £4 cheaper than the next best offers. Thanks to feeder @ HUKD.

ShopTo already had the cheapest price going for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit earlier in the week, but its slashed the price further to widen the gap with competing retailers to almost five pounds. For £19.85, you really can't go wrong with Criterion's take on the long-running franchise. It's a return to the series anarchic roots, with super-car racers putting the pedal to the floor across a variety of stunningly detailed environments, with a platoon of similarly suped up police cars in hot pursuit. If you missed out on the £10 deal for this game earlier this month then this is currently the best price for the arcade racing title. With it going back to the roots of the series at long last, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit has you either evading the cops or hunting down the speed demons with full campaign modes for both sides of the law. You can even challenge players online either in-game or through leaderboards in your quest for online domination. If you’re undecided on the purchase, be sure to check out Brendan’s review. Thanks to missgem @ HUKD!

While it probably lacks the graphical horsepower and online capabilities of its console siblings, the Wii version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is still a great racer and now at a great price at ShopTo, only £14.86. Hot Pursuit returns to NFS' roots with its cops and robbers - in cars, mind you - premise, but bolstered with great crash sequences and a wonderfully persistent online presence, thanks to new developers, Criterion, of Burnout fame.

Both Amazon and Play have dropped the PC version to just under a tenner, so you now have a choice of which online retailer you want to give you hard earned cash to. Hot Pursuit 2

I think it's safe to say that the demo for this game didn't really do it any justice, and it definitely put me off grabbing a copy of the full game when it was released, which is a shame because Hot Pursuit hails back to the series roots. The single player lets you choose between chasing down bad guys as the cops, or trying your best to outrun the police as a street wise car racer. You'll also be able to challenge your friends, or complete strangers, to tyre screeching races whilst in-game or through the game's online leaderboards. Thanks to heathen81 @ HUKD.

Developer: Criterion Games

Publisher: EA

With the successful rebranding of Need for Speed as something a bit more serious with last year's NFS: Shift, EA might have wished they hadn't already tasked Criterion Games with taking on the old brand instead of working on a new Burnout game. But hell, we were all more excited than we'd like to admit at the possibility of a Burnout/NFS hybrid even if EA couldn't be arsed coming up with a new name. But is it a Brangelina or a three-thumbed hillbilly?

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit straps you into the seat of some of the world’s hottest cars as both a racer and a police officer in the fictional US location, Seacrest County. Sea crest consists of many, many desert roads, beaches and mountain passes. But mainly deserts. While the races take place on tarmac there are loads of shortcuts you can take to gain an advantage. Often they'll be more hazardous and over rough terrain, so you'll have to judge which ones work best for you and the car you're driving. There are even a few that may take longer than the original route, you'll have fun checking them all though.

Bounty points are rewarded for taking part in events and for your actions during them. There are extra points available if you can get a gold ranking too. These points level up your racer/officer and regularly award you new rides.

The Fast & The Fuzz

As a racer you’ll compete in standard races, duals and time trial events. More exciting though are the Hot Pursuits where you have to escape from the cops and still win a race. You have a few tricks to help you out; you can nitro boost into them to cause damage or you can use rear-deployed spike-strips, EMP blasts to hammer the electrics and stun them and a jammer to mess up their map and screw with the chase helicopter's tracking. Later on you’ll also unlock a turbo boost that will send you tearing down the road at an unmatchable speed.

We've covered a few PC and PS360 deals for Hot Pursuit, but this is the first Wii deal to my understanding. I can't comment on the quality of this, other than recognizing it was developed by a separate team to Criterion, the visuals are apparently quite ugly, and it's not suited to the Wii racing wheel. So, as far as selling a game goes, I'm doing pretty bad. But who knows, it might actually be a lot of fun. The Need for Speed games in general are great stuff, and Hot Pursuit seems to be channeling Most Wanted's spirit, which is by no means a bad thing. It's a fantastic idea, actually.

While PC gamers do tend to get the cold shoulder now and again, you can at least rest easy and now the latest games will drop in price far quicker than their console counterparts, ala Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which you can grab off Zavvi for just £12.95. That's a great price for a game that's enjoying quite a good reception, with Burnout developers Criterion stepping up to the plate and delivering a truly old-school Need for Speed, where racers face off against suped-up police cruisers, with all manner of mayhem and vehicular carnage ensuing. Smashing.

Retailers seem to be trying to give Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit away for next to nothing... despite it being absolutely epic. Criterion have injected a healthy dose of Burnout into NFS' veins, creating a high-octane experience that's liberally soaked with adrenaline. Bursting through roadblocks and squaring off against elite Police Interceptors is white knuckle fun at its very finest, with active leaderboards providing the perfect incentive to keep playing and caning your mates. Plus, Criterion have finally kicked the puerile too cool for school street racing vibe to the kerb.

There have been a lot of deals for this game for the PS3 & Xbox 360 owners amongst you all, but today we’re going to give the Wii owners some love… with the price at least anyway, because sadly the actual game is pretty mediocre on the Wii. With development being handled by Exient and not Criterion, it has more in common with Need For Speed Nitro than it does with Hot Pursuit on the other consoles and suffers for it. That said, for a game on the Ninty console it doesn’t look too bad graphically, and if you don’t own one of the other behemoth consoles or just fancy some random arcade driving action this then it’s the best price for it.
