The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing III Preview | Going Out With A Bang

The final chapter of a trilogy needs to go out with a bang, so when all else fails, letting us create enormous elemental explosions bristling with lava death snakes is a good bet.

We're big fans of The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing here at Dealspwn. NeoCore's underdog action RPG series has delivered sensational quality and great replayable gameplay at a bargain price, working towards a trilogy that adds up to a fraction of Diablo III's RRP. Satisfying and occasionally hilarious, we heaped praise on both The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing and The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II.

There's a lot riding on part three, then, and based on the latest preview build I'm confident that it's on course to deliver. However, we'll face a surprisingly tough decision: should we import our character from the previous games or jump into the two new classes? One of which is capable of summoning the aforementioned superheated death snakes on a whim.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing III is set to release on Steam next month, bringing the tongue-in-cheek yet brilliant action RPG trilogy to a close. Neocore Games have now announced two new classes that we'll be able to bring to bear should we not want to import our existing characters: the Elementalist and Protector.

Watch them strut their stuff in the trailer above.

I'll be paying Neocore Games a visit next week to test out the latest build and quiz them about what to expect from the third chapter. Let me know if you have any questions for them!

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing III bares its fangs in May

(and we can't wait)

We love The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing here at Dealspwn.com. Back when Diablo III was flailing, before update 2.0, NeoCore Games managed to beat Blizzard at their own game with a fantastic dungeon crawling RPG with a unique world, tongue-in-cheek humour and released in meaty £14.99 chunks.

So after thoroughly enjoying The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing and The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II -- not to mention the deeply impressive spinoff Deathtrap (reviews through the links) -- we're good and ready to get stuck into the last third of the trilogy. We won't have long to wait, as NeoCore have dated The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing III for May 2015.

Deathtrap Review | The Incredible Tower Defender

Tower Defence is dead. Tower Defence hybrids are where it's at, and Deathtrap is one of the best I've ever played.

Neocore's latest project ought to do the business considering that the brilliant The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II was basically a prototype. "Even the optional tower defence sections are good enough to be a standalone game in their own right," I wrote, and now that game has graduated from Early Access into version 1.0.

Half Diablo-style dungeon crawler, half hardcore tower defender and all glorioisly gory gothic ham, Deathtrap really is  an exceptional genre hybrid. And yet I can't help wanting more -- not from it, but of it.

Deathtrap Review | The Incredible Tower Defender

Deathtrap is already built on isometric action RPG pedigree, seeing as it shares an engine and even a fair few assets with the Van Helsing series, so the raw mechanics of slaughtering Hungarian folk beasties are polished, nuanced and deeply satisfying. Only this time, you're desperately trying to stop waves of enemies from breaching your painstakingly-constructed defences rather than looking for a boss or exit.

PREVIEW | Deathtrap: Diablo meets Tower Defence in a bloodsoaked gothic romp

"The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing 2 punches well above its weight and ends up as a markedly superior game. Seriously, even the optional tower defence sections are good enough to be a standalone game in their own right."

I'm not trying to take credit for Deathtrap -- even I'm not that egotistical -- but I certainly called it in our Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II review. NeoCore are already masters at creating rock-solid action RPG gameplay with compelling progression and great combat, so having discovered a knack for tower defence too, they decided to build a brand new game mixing all three elements together.

The result is half Diablo-style dungeon crawler, half tower defender and all delightfully OTT gothic horror romp. With multiple classes, tricky mazes, hordes of enemies, addictive levelling, versatile upgrades, co-op, infinite user-generated content and more besides, Deathtrap expertly blends the strategy of tower defence with the insanely hectic combat of Diablo. It's an example of a tower defence RPG hybrid that actually tries to break the mold, and rise above the pack in an otherwise crowded sub-genre.

And because it's built on the dependable Van Helsing foundation, it's also an example of an Early Access game that actually works!

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing 1 & 2 on sale at Gamersgate this weekend

GamersGate are throwing a 'Van Helsing weekend,' which allows you to grab their two excellent action RPGs at a serious saving. The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing was a fantastic start for the franchise, injecting humour and personality into the addictive Diablo formula, while its sequel pushed the boat out in practically every direction possible. For reference: our Van Helsing I review and Van Helsing II review.

The first game is available as a complete edition for £3.75, whereas the sequel will run you £6. You can import your character over and continue the adventure with more advanced skills, and I'd highly recommend doing so.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing Review

If you're a fan of hack & slash action RPG combat but wish that Diablo wouldn't take itself so seriously, the Van Helsing series is about to rock your world. Quality ARPGs with an anarchic sense of humour and massive value... for £11.99 each at full price. Now that the second game is out -- and brilliant -- there's never been a better time to pick up the first, especially since it's less than four Quid with all the DLC too. Character save files transfer over, so you know.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II Review | Lives Up To Its Name

Platforms: PC (£11.99)

Developer: Neocore Games

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing is a guilty pleasure and a great idea. It's a full-fat Action RPG delivered in three meaty parts costing £11.99 apiece, but packing the personality of a rambunctious B-Movie adventure. The floppy hatted hunter rampages through a bestiary of classic movie monsters and mad science experiments, swapping banter and gear with his sarcastic yet faithful companion Lady Katarina. It's a hoot, a real honest-to-goodness rollicking romp that doesn't take itself seriously, yet delivers solid Diablo-esque shenanigans for less than the price of Blizzard's expansion pack.

After seeing a great deal of potential in the first game, my faith was rewarded by a host of post-launch updates that added massive replayability and new features into the package, after which NeoCore set to creating a sequel with much more ambition. They succeeded. Barring a few bugs and some questionable writing, The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing 2 punches well above its weight and ends up as a markedly superior game.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II Review | Lives Up To Its Name

Seriously, even the optional tower defence sections are good enough to be a standalone game in their own right. Let alone the 12-15 hours of slaughtering supernatural beasties wrapped around them!

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing 2 Preview | Vamp, Vamp!

Platforms: PC

Developer: Neocore Games

I can't wait for Van Helsing's next adventure.

Neocore Games came out swinging with a fantastic idea: a massive loot-grinding RPG delivered in three episodes, each lasting 12-15 hours apiece with save file compatibility. We therefore get an enormous slab of gunslinging, swordswinging, swashbuckling and teh phattest of lewtz delivered on our terms, allowing us to test the waters for £11.99 apiece and buy the whole thing for the same price as Diablo III's expansion pack. The first episode was solid, versatile, challenging and off-kilter; a real rip-roaring adventure that didn't take itself too seriously yet was deadly serious about its gameplay.

Now the legendary monster hunter finds himself defending a city under siege by the villainous General Harker, who throws an army of steampunk horrors at the grim defenders. It's time to don the floppy hat, grab our ghostly companion and unleash our inner Van Helsing... with a little more strategy this time around.

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing Review | Diabolical Delight

Platforms: PC (reviewed) | XBLA version TBA

Developer: Neocore Games

Suggesting that The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing shares similarities with Diablo would be like saying that La Tour Eiffel looks a bit familiar after a trip to Blackpool. It's a click-heavy isometric action RPG with an emphasis on combat and loot. Health and mana are represented by red and blue gauges. You'll click on enemies to attack them, hold shift to deal damage without moving, identify items and assign skill points... in the game, not Blackpool Tower. Forget that analogy now. There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from a good place, but at first glance, the word 'clone' and other slightly less charitable phrases spring dangerously to mind.

Look a little deeper, however, and you'll discover a game that breaks the mold in a number of exciting ways. The studio behind the King Arthur series haven't just honed the loot grinding mechanics to an enjoyable tee, rather they've used it to support a rip-roaring, rollicking adventure with an upbeat tone, likeable characters and truly excellent combat. All for £11.99.

That low price point belies what promises to be a very divisive approach to game length and replayability, but in terms of fun/£, Neocore's ARPG effort is an absolute belter.
