3D Streets of Rage II Review | Added depth for a true classic

In my younger years my brawler of choice was Double Dragon II, but that was mainly because I didn’t get a Mega Drive until much later on. That's not to say I didn’t sample the delights of Streets of Rage, though. I remember playing it for the first time round a friend’s house, co-op’ing our way to victory by smashing thugs with our virtual fists of fury. However, as good as SoR I was, the defining entry was clearly Streets of Rage II thanks to its more varied enemies, brand new special moves, and differing boss fights.

With Sega having already given the first game a 3D makeover, along with other classics like Thunder Blade and Outrun, there have been many brawler fans waiting for 3D Streets of Rage II to make its glorious return. The good news is that the wait has been absolutely worth it, and the 3DS version not only adds depth in terms of its visuals, but in its accessibility and longevity too.

  • Beatbuddy (Threaks, £8.09) – this action-adventure game relies on rhythm-based timing to perform some moves and key moments. With six beautifully hand-drawn worlds, each featuring unique music composed by industry legends like Austin Wintory, Parov Stelar, chiptune-genius Sabrepulse, and the La Rochelle Band, and the promise of more content in the form of DLC, this is one to look out for. Available from 5th August.
  • Sanatory Hallways (Wegenbartho, £8.99) – a unique two-player experience that sees one character wielding a flashlight to escape her nightmare, with the other being a ghost tasked with tormenting her.

Remember Opa-Opa? Okay, you probably don't, but Opa-Opa was the spaceship you controlled in Fantasy Zone II back in 1987 on your Sega Master System and was the sequel to the 1986 release (aptly named) Fantasy Zone.

Today the game finds its release on the Nintendo 3DS with graphics that have been updated from the 8bit Master System standard to 16bit and has even had a 'W" added to the title!

But why the 'W'? Find out after the page break.....

Nintendo eShop deals of the week - Pandora's Tower only £13.49

Nintendo has revealed this week's eShop deals on 3DS and Wii U, which will go live on Thursday night as always.

It's a fairly mediocre selection with one saving grace in the form of Pandora's Tower, which will release as a Wii download for £13.49 in its first week before reverting back to £17.99. We praised this unique action RPG in our Pandora's Tower review, highlighting its heartbreaking love story and clever time-limited exploration, though pointing out a few gripes along the way.

There are a few discounts on 3DS too, which you can see below. Need to top up your Nintendo account? Get some cheap 3DS & Wii U credit here.

Nintendo eShop deals of the week

(are a bit pants)

As per usual, Nintendo are set to refresh and update the 3DS and Wii U eShop at midnight tonight, bringing new content and deals to the table. In terms of new software, Affordable Space Adventures is launching at £16.99 on Wii U, while Pokemon Rumble World released yesterday as another 3DS free to play experiment.

The deals, meanwhile, are... how best to put this? There's a technical term we use in the game criticism trade: pants.

Here are your Nintendo eShop deals of the week - Citizens Of Earth only £6.69 on 3DS/Wii U

Nintendo has revealed this week's eShop deals on 3DS and Wii U, which will go live this Thursday.

The highlight definitely has to be Citizens Of Earth for £6.69, which only released a couple of months ago. "Citizens Of Earth is more than just an Earthbound homage," I wrote in our Citizens Of Earth review. "Zany humour finds wonder and wackiness in the mundane, while the recruitment system lets you build a versatile army that changes the way you explore and battle in a JRPG.

"It's a shame that Eden's inexperience with this tricky genre leads to major pacing problems with the campaign and combat, but there's still a deep and delightfully surreal experience here for patient players who can handle the busywork that comes with being the Vice President."

VVVVVV To Launch On 3DS This Thursday

Nintendo have announced that Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV will be launching on the 3DS eShop in two days' time.

The highly acclaimed, gravity-bending platformer will be available for £7.20, which might seem a little steep to PC owners who've been able to get it for around half that for some time. Still, now you'll be able to play it on your 3DS whilst trawling for StreetPasses.

There are other releases too, of course. SEGA will be dropping Sonic Labyrinth onto the 3DS this week at £4.50, as well as releasing golden oldies Monster World IV and Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the Wii for 900 Wii Points each.
