Wildstar is only a few weeks from release, and in case you haven't watched any of our numerous fascinating videos or pored through Carl's magnicicently-detailed articles, it's kind of a big deal. Carbine's new MMORPG has been years in the making, offering a whole new colourful world to explore and conquer alongside robust PvP, raids, crazy choose-your-own-adventure dungeons, Warplots, player housing and dynamic combat that doesn't suck.
So, basically, The Elder Scrolls Online needs to grab its ankles.
You don't need to take our word for it, though, because Wildstar is opening its doors to everyone from May 8th -- this Thursday -- until the 18th. It's the perfect opportunity to create a character, choose a side, get involved and generally see what all the fuss has been about over the last few months and years. Or in other words: participate in a stress test. Either way, don't pretend you're not intrigued.
Whether Wildstar can earn its subscription (which can be bought in-game as a commodity if you're canny or diligent enough) remains to be seen - as does whether the servers are up to the challenge. But we can't wait to find out.Click here to read more...
If you're itching to try Battlefield 4 before its October 29th release date, EA has confirmed that the open beta will kick off on the first of the month. Available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, the beta will loose you onto the Siege of Shanghai map in Conquest mode - though will likely be a glorified demo or stress test rather than a bona fide beta. Pre-order customers will get earlier access, details of which will be announced soon.
EA COO Peter Moore also reiterated that the PS3 version will contain an option to buy a digital PS4 copy for £10, making upgrades a cinch.

Avast, me hearties, and so on. Impressive free-to-play Pirate MMO Kartuga will enter open beta this weekend for a great big stress test, meaning that anyone with a browser can get involved without a key.
As I explained in our Kartuga hands-on preview, this action-RPG with strong structured PvP elements is a surprisingly deep MMO proposition, and will cost you nothing. Brilliantly, you don't have to take my word for it now.
The Dust 514 open beta is a GO! CCP have their arms outstretched, PS3 gamers, the Tranquility servers are waiting for you, and those EVE corporations need your trigger fingers to be itchier than a hairy male escort's nether-thatch.
PvE is not live as yet, but there's a boatload of PvP to get stuck into, and remember, if you've already been playing in the closed beta, all of your data and perks should have migrated over nicely.
Bethesda Softworks announced today that curious parties can now sign up for The Elder Scrolls Online's open beta. All that you have to do to stick your name into the hat for consideration is head over to ElderScrollsOnline.com and stick in a couple of details to register.
“We’re really excited to get the game into players’ hands,” said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. “We receive invaluable feedback through the beta process, and that helps us ensure that the game will be one of the best online gaming experiences ever offered -- one worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”
Carl has been feverishly waxing lyrical about Hawken since getting to grips with Adhesive and Meteor's free-to-play mech extravaganza, and it seems the game will be emerging from closed beta to provide a more inclusive experience in a matter of days when the open beta kicks off on 12/12/12.Click here to read more...
The closed beta is done. All hail the open beta! Ghost Recon Online can now be tested out by anyone, with Ubisoft moving the game into open beta.
You'll need an Uplay account to sign up, but they're free, and chances are you'll probably have one already if you've touched an Ubisoft title in the last few years.
Ubisoft have also kicked off their weekly missions initiative. The first one - named Eagle Eye - will reward players with some rare Mark IV armour if they can maintain an accuracy of 15% over 5 matches.
You can get stuck in over on the Ghost Recon Online blog.
The much publicized Open Beta for DICE’s upcoming FPS Battlefield 3 officially begins today. Those that pre-ordered the game or purchased the Medal of Honor Limited Edition have already had access for the last two days, but by the end of the day anyone who wishes to join in, be it on PS3, Xbox 360, or PC, will be able to download the client and jump into the action.Click here to read more...
Reloaded Productions, owned by online gaming outfit GamersFirst, have announced that their reboot of the ill-fated MMOTPS APB: All Points Bulletin will be entering its Open Beta stage on 19th May. This will give the public and former players of the MMO a chance to see the changes that have been unleashed on the aptly renamed APB: Reloaded.
This comes several months after GamersFirst bought the rights to APB after its disastrous launch with original developers Realtime Worlds, who along with the game went out of business within a month of its release. While the game was praised for its heavy customisation, APB was riddled with bugs, exploits, and hackers, along with an experimental (and not well received) subscription system. The developers have aimed to fix these problems with the latest patch in the currently closed beta.Click here for more details >>
Oops. Someone at 2K is going to be receiving a sound thrashing in the wake of a leaked L.A. Noire trailer hitting the internet... and outing the release date as May 17th.
It's entirely possible that this video is a hoax, but it looks kosher to us. 2K and Rockstar have yet to respond, but are pulling the video off of the internet as quickly as they can. [Thanks for the working VT, RipTen]
Hands up if you're excited about Killzone 3!
Damn, I'll need that hand to type. Anyways, Sony have announced that PSN users will be able to freely download the open beta from February 3rd, meaning that we'll have 20 days to get in some serious practice. It's not technically a beta since Killzone 3 has already gone gold, but hey, we'll take what we can get. Note that Helghast Edition pre-orders will also ship with accelerated rank experience over the first few days!
In the meantime, some new footage (embedded for your pleasure) sheds some light on 0ne of the new maps: Bilgarsk Boulevard.
Last May, Sony tested the waters by asking gamers whether they'd buy reskinned HD versions of PS1-2 titles. The answer was a resounding yes please- and Metal Gear Solid was one of the most popular candidates for HD treatment.
Sly Cooper, Lara Croft and many other veteran heroes have signed up for high definition trilogy collections, but the current industry buzz is that Konami are currently working on the Metal Gear collection that we all truly deserve. It's just a rumour at present- but you'd better believe that this will happen sooner or later. Our money's on sooner. [OPM via CVG]
