Planetside 2 brings epic battles to PS4

When you're announcing that the biggest and most insanely satisfying battles on the internet have arrived on PS4, nothing less than a launch trailer backed by Eagles Of Death Metal will do.

It came to make a bang, yeah. Just watch it and behold the immense three-way battles between hundreds of infantry, tanks and aircraft that make Planetside 2 one of the best free-to-play titles of all time.

And, naturally, make sure to join the Terran Republic to fight for honour and glory. Not those New Conglomerate reprobates or devastatingly stylish Vanu. Download it here, but be aware that some server issues are still being sorted out.

Top Ten Tuesdays | 10 things to do while we wait for Destiny's return

The Destiny beta is done, dusted, and now there's a void that can only be filled with expansive Bungie FPS gunplay and the mechanical tones of Peter Dinklage. I don't know about you, but I've found myself growing listless, fidgety, unable to focus or concentrate on anything in particular without tearing off my shirt and screaming DESTINY!! in the manner of some sort of game-obsessed, caramel William Wallace (caraMEL Gibson?).

I may have a serious problem.

Beta withdrawal is most definitely a thing. How dare these developers dangle their outstanding wares in front of our faces, only to take them away for further "polishing" and "optimisation". I need my fix, man. I'm starting to see Dreg crawling around the ceiling.

Top Ten Tuesdays | 10 things to do while we wait for Destiny's return

Thankfully, we have the answer to anyone experiencing similar symptoms. Fret not, weary friend of the Traveller, we've got some great ideas for how to while away the days until Destiny's release in no particular order.

The trio had a plan for this week's Game Night - log onto PlanetSide 2, go to the new continent of Hossin, and claim it in the name of the TR. It was to be a glorious session.

But then Hossin was Continent-locked. Balls.

So instead the team took their unique skills and focused on making some sweepings gains, as Team Sweeping Gains! Highlights include some Liberator runs of not-so-much glory, the sickest of jumps in a Marauder, the rescue of Matt from deep within enemy territory, and a hard fought battle against the Vanu. Did the team come away victorious? You'll only be able to find out by watching this week's Game Night!

With the recent update to PlanetSide 2 finally delivering the long-awaited new continent of Hossin, the Dealspwn team jumped in-game to see if it had been worth the wait earlier this week. Having splashed around in the foggy swamps and fought amongst the trees, Carl and Jon sat down to reflect on the newest area for Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play online shooter.

Topics include the duo's first impressions, what they liked most about the swampy environment, the new features such as the Continent-Lock system, and what they hope to see added in the future.

Game Night | Planetside 2 - Revisiting Amerish
The trio return to PlanetSide 2 in this week's Game Night. With the continent of Amerish having recently had its geometry and lattice system revamped, the team take a tour of the mountains and base layouts that are now there.

They then attempt to get into the fight, and the results were... well, see for yourself.

Game Night | The Pilot Part 2 - PlanetSide 2
We're back with part 2 of our pilot episode of Game Night, continuing our glorious march with fellow TR forces in SOE's free-to-play MMOFPS PlanetSide 2.

After rejoining the action and pushing through with the tank column, our heroic trio continue the push on towards another base, where an epic night-time battle ensues. Will they succeed? Will there be sweeping gains? You'll have to hit the jump and watch to find out.

Game Night | The Pilot Part 1 - PlanetSide 2
We promised more video content this year, and so we're testing out a new venture we call Game Night - where the team here at the Dealspwn Citadel get together once a week to play a game, and then we show you the results. It could be anything - a current blockbuster title, a horrendously broken mess, an indie darling, or perhaps a fan favourite from yesteryear. To see how it all faired as an idea, we decided to take our pilot episode onto Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play MMOFPS extravaganza PlanetSide 2, fighting for the glory of the Terran Republic. There was death, slip-sliding tanks, much smoke, more death, the world's worst Marauder run, and even more death. See it all after the jump.

"I have no idea what's going on" | Misadventures in PlanetSide 2

Even thought we've regularly admitted here on Dealspwn that we love PlanetSide 2's ridiculous global warfare, Carl has taken a break in recent months due to a lack of time. Well, thanks to a lot of insistence from Jon, he finally decided to get back into the fight during last week's Friday Night Ops, but what happened when a recall order was issued to rally at the warpgate was... not what they were expecting. It has to be seen to be believed, and you can do so by hitting the jump.

Planetside 2 Is Not PS4's "Massively Multiplayer Halo." It Deserves Better, Sony

It was all going so well. Following last year's launch, Planetside 2 has evolved into probably the best free-to-play shooter on the market, offering truly enormous battles and a staggeringly generous economy. Sony Online Entertainment have been scurrying around to optimise the MMOFPS to run on a wider variety of PC specifications while tweaking mechanics and the metagame. A new patch is ready to download, a new continent is in the offing, a PS4 version is slated for next year and the future is bright.

And then SOE president John Smedley went and spoiled it all by saying something stupid like, "we believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4."

Planetside 2 Getting Retail Edition

Bear with me, because I'm not entirely sure how to explain this. Here goes: Planetside 2, the superb free-to-play MMOFPS that's currently one of the most intense shooters out there, will soon be available to buy in shops. Even though it's freely downloadable, for nothing, and you'll need to have a decent internet connection to play it.

At least you'll get a few bonuses, one of which might actually make it worth buying for existing players.

It's important to note that some of favourite gaming moments might not necessarily coincide with our shouts for the best games of 2013, but here are a few occurrences and happenings that have proven truly memorable from the past six months, from in-game action to juicy bits of news that have gotten us all flustered, these are our favourite gaming moments of 2013 so far...

Brendan -- Have A Little Faith

Half Time | Favourite Gaming Moments of 2013 So Far

A selection of my highlights include Naughty dog giving us PS4-standard visuals throughout The Last of Us, enjoying the co-op platforming delights of Battleblock Theater with my girlfriend (mainly because I got to push her into spike pits) and finally getting involved with The Walking Dead and Journey thanks to having the privilege of reviewing the retail editions.

As a PlayStation regular, I’ve been fairly amused throughout 2013 at how good the PS4 has been looking while Microsoft have been doing their level best to become Bastards of the Year. It was also great to see EA drop the Online Pass meaning we could rent their games and try out the multiplayer without an extra charge. It was perfectly timed with them releasing Fuse too, which has ‘fun for a rental’ written all over it.

Best news though? It has to be the reveal of a new Mirror’s Edge game. It’s going to be at least 2014 until we see it, but the brief reveal trailer was just what I’ve been craving for years. The original was one of the bravest titles in years and I can only applaud EA for giving DICE the green light to make another game. I think they should go ahead and give it a name though as the prequel nature of the game means it won’t be called Mirror’s Edge 2.

I’m hoping for some tighter controls for Faith, a similar distaste for guns and a more open game world this time to use as a parkour playground. What I really want is for it to be awesome and successful in order to give movement in FPS games the vital boot up the arse it needs. I’m not putting much stock in Titanfall or Dying Light to get the free-running feel right to be honest. I’ll be taking the leap with Faith once again. Come join us.

Top Ten Tuesdays | Great Free To Play Games To Get You Through The Summer

(Without Spending Any Money!)

Free To Play aren't dirty words any more. In sharp contrast to troublesome social gaming and throwaway apps, we've now got a wealth of fantastic games on multiple platforms, most of which boast sensational production values and gameplay that rivals the biggest AAA blockbusters out there.

Though the Steam sale is looming over our wallets like the sword of Newellcles, you can easily spend the entire summer playing any number of great games without paying a single penny. To that end, here's a list of some of the most outstanding F2P games out there, along with reasons why you can save some serious money over the coming months.

Honourable mentions: Marathon Trilogy (Aleph One), Smite, Wonderputt, Battlestar Galactica, Tyrian 2000, Blacklight Retribution, Tribes Ascend, Super Monday Night Combat, SWTOR, D&D Online, Reprisal, Fallen London, Neptune's Pride, all the iOS and Android stuff (more Mobot's territory, really)

10: Neverwinter

Top Ten Tuesdays | Great Free To Play Games To Get You Through The Summer

Cryptic's new D&D-flavoured MMO may be rather linear and lacking in deep class builds, but its fun action-oriented combat and wealth of free content makes it a perfect summer fling. Better yet, Neverwinter is easy to digest and understand, meaning that genre newcomers can use it to test the waters and decide whether MMORPGs are right for them without having to pay up front or monthly.

We'll have a full review very soon.

This week on Game Buzz, we shower CD Projekt with praise because we can, and also because of the ridiculous GOG Summer Sale; we take a look at the rest of this week's mutterings about the Xbox One, and that rumoured MS worker testimonial; we discuss the implications of a game such as Planetside 2 being exempt from the PS Plus multiplayer requirement; and we wonder if Nintendo have run out of ideas completely, not just for F-Zero.

GU08 Now Out For PlanetSide 2

Harasser Buggy Now In-game

In what is being touted as their “biggest Game Update yet,” Sony Online Entertainment have released GU 08 for their free-to-play MMOFPS PlanetSide 2. Along with the usual bundle of game fixes and balance checks, the update brings a bunch of new additions to the online action, including the Harasser Buggy. Capable of carrying three players (including a MAX unit in the rumble seat) we suspect some rather interesting combinations will be enterting the battlefield from today. You can see the new vehicle in action by checking out the video below, before getting some additional details about the GU after the jump.
