Mega Coin Squad Review | I was only one coin short

Retro is cool again. Mega Coin Squad defines that in a nutshell. It's a retro style platformer presented with old-school graphics combined with the faithful platforming genre.

On paper Mega Coin Squad is straightforward: jump around, collect coins, shoot enemies and don't die.

MCS offers us one of five available characters to choose from, each with different attributes awarding certain advantage gains over speed, acceleration, weight and power. It was instantly apparent from the character selection screen that Mega Coin Squad is heavily influenced by Super Mario Bros.

Yoshi's Woolly World Review | Nintendo At The Top Of Their Game

Videogames have undoubtedly grown beyond toys into a bona fide art form and entertainment medium, but Yoshi's Woolly World reminds us that there's no shame in creating a wonderful toy. Beautifully crafted with love, innovation and attention to detail, it's a joy to play with - not just play.

Or in other words Yoshi's Woolly World is an absolute belter: one of the best platformers of recent years and the surprise hit of the summer. If you thought that Nintendo were going through the motions this year, think again.

Yoshi and his clan live a carefree existence in the titular Woolly World, a snuggly universe of cushions, yarn and soft furnishings that's a delight to behold. Unfortunately when a rogue Magikoopa unravels the knitted Yoshis into balls of yarn and scatters them across the land, it's up to our green hero to sally forth and save the day in an adventure that's as relaxing, challenging and hardcore as you want it to be.

Kirby And The Rainbow Paintbrush Review | Right Idea, Wrong Console

The Wii U GamePad is not a gimmick, but by and large Nintendo's first-party exclusives have struggled to prove it. Kirby And The Rainbow Paintbrush was supposed to change all that. Controlled exclusively using the touchscreen and stylus, it's an attempt to create an experience that could only work on Nintendo's excellent yet under-utilised peripheral.

Unfortunately Rainbow Paintbrush is too successful for its own good. Instead of enhancing the experience, the GamePad dominates proceedings to the extent that you might as well turn the television off to save power. Indeed, it feels uncomfortably like the makings of a great 3DS game or even an iPad debut that released on the wrong platform.

Kirby And The Rainbow Paintbrush Review | Right Idea, Wrong Console

After the colour is stolen from Kirby's world, our spherical hero rolls out to save the day. Literally. This time we can't directly control the pink protagonist, who's a slave to gravity and momentum. Once you've tapped him to start him rolling, you'll use the stylus to freely doodle rollercoaster-esque rails for him to follow around the 2D environments, creating loops to build up speed, platforms to reach lofty collectibles and paths to evade enemies, smash through blocks and circumvent obstacles. Later levels let you manipulate materials like water and sand in the same fashion, while you can tap to activate interactive level elements and activate a ruinous boost mode after collecting enough coins.

It's unique enough to make for a great first impression, especially since there's a satisfyingly meaty learning curve.

Lego The Hobbit only £14.99 on Wii U

Fancy reliving the Hobbit movies in Lego form and pandering to your obsessive nature over in-game collectibles? Then be sure to pick up Lego The Hobbit on your Wii U for only £14.99.

The latest Lego effort is one of the more rushed efforts from the overworked Traveller's Tales studio, but it's much more appealing at this price. It's certainly worth a look if you're a series fan. The third film was supposed to be added as DLC late last year, but has since been cancelled.

Superfrog HD only £1.40 on PC, fellow Amiga fans

What a classic. I still have fond memories of Superfrog on my Amiga 600, and this excellent remake does a great job of sharpening things up, smoothing things out and basically making sure the rose-tinted specs stay intact. I do miss all the Lucozade. Perhaps they should have replaced it with Mountain Dew as a sign of the times?

If you missed the Team 17 Humble Weekly Bundle, you can now pick up Superfrog HD for just £1.40 on PC.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 re-released on Wii U - only £8.99 this week

Wow, that was one hell of a Nintendo Direct. You can watch it here if you missed it, but one of the pieces of news sandwiched between the amazing tralers and announcements is that a number of Wii games are being re-released as Wii U downloads.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of these games, and it's available on the Wii U eShop now at £8.99 this week only. That's 50% off, so it might be worth picking up sooner rather than later. Thanks grooty!

One of the very best platformers of the last decade, Super Meat Boy is an outstanding game, with perfect mechanics married to cheeky and charming aesthetics. It's brilliant, punishing, and intensely affordable. Though, as with most red meat, we'd advise against playing this if you have a heart condition.

You will fail. A lot.

You'll need to use Rakuten voucher code JANOFFER5 to get it at this price.

In the interests of transparency, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze really doesn't push my buttons. It's solid, colourful and challenging, but makes no attempt to push its gameplay anywhere remotely new or interesting, in stark contrast to the two surprisingly unpredictable Mario games of late. Or the unstoppable might of Rayman Legends. Still, its quality cannot be denied, and neither can the potential savings here. We've occasionally seen it £2 cheaper, but this is still a great price. FEZ just £2.49 on PS4 via the PS Store

In many ways, Fez reminded us of Portal. Both create moments of supreme frustration in the player at the limits of knowledge and understanding, and both provide exceptional payoffs when the player finally overcomes those hurdles. If you were willing to play the game and truly get involved, Fez rewarded you time and time again. With its simple conceit (and fantastic execution), Fez took a commendably mature approach to letting you discover things for yourself. It was a flawed work of brilliance to be sure (*cough* patches), but brilliance nonetheless.

And now it costs less than a pint on PS4.

UPDATE: The price doesn't seem to be showing for some, but if you add to basket it should show as £2.49. Cheers J.

Super Monkey Ball 3D now only £6.85 at ShopTo

Super Monkey Ball 3D now only £6.85 at ShopTo. Click here to buy >>

There's a reason that Super Monkey Ball 3D is now only £6.85. That's because it isn't very good. One of the first games to launch on 3DS, it was clearly hurried out of the gates, and manages to turn one of the most fun, enjoyable series in gaming into a clunky mess.

Still, it is cheap.
