Ubisoft Killed Tiny Tim - Game Buzz #100

Holy balls, we made it to 100 episodes! Yay!

Unfortunately, we were being so utterly professional that we forgot this podcast was in fact our century milestone. So there's no cake. Booo!

There is, however, a great big natter about the PlayStation Experience, Street Fighter exclusivity, Final Fantasy VII, the disappointment also know as The Crew, and winning weeks for Microsoft and Nintendo.

We'll get some cake in for the next one.

Game Buzz | Episode 100 - Ubisoft Killed Tiny Tim. Recorded 12th December, 2014.

Parental Advisory: We've tried to keep it as conversational and informal as possible, and you should be warned that there may be some instances of strong language, dreadful impressions, and terrible puns.

#20YearsOfPlay - Lasting Memories Of The Original PlayStation

This has made us all feel very old, you know.

Twenty years of PlayStation is a milestone that deserves to be celebrated. And to think that the original PlayStation might never have come about had Nintendo not made the most colossal douche-move of their existence.

Of the course of nearly an hour, we look back on our first dealings with Sony's little grey box of tricks, and reflect on the gaming experiences that have stayed with us over the years. We pick apart the top ten PSOne games list I ran a few days back, and look at some of the titles that didn't quite make the grade, before looking at the legacy of the original PlayStation and how, even twenty years ago, Sony were espousing their #4thePlayers mentality.

We Need To Talk About #PS4NoParity and Assassin's Creed Unity

We Need To Talk About #PS4NoParity and Assassin's Creed Unity

Another week, another Ubisoft story that has caused uproar and division, aided once again by statements from the publisher that only make things worse. This week, Sony fans are up in arms because Assassin's Creed: Unity will be released across Xbox One and PS4 running at 900p and 30fps.

For comparison's sake, Unity's predecessor -- Black Flag -- enjoyed a fairly equal release itself, but it wasn't long before the game was patched on PS4 to take advantage of that system's potential, and upgraded to 1080p/30fps with an additional free patch, with the Xbox One version stuck at the launch 900p/30fps.

There was disparity for Watch Dogs as well, running at 900p on PlayStation 4 and 792p on Xbox One.

Here, however, Ubisoft have opted for parity, apparently in order to "avoid all the debates and stuff," senior producer Vincent Pontbriand told VideoGamer in an interview. "Technically we're CPU-bound. The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel."

We Need To Talk About #PS4NoParity and Assassin's Creed Unity

Except it's done the complete opposite. A hashtag has emerged (all movements have hashtags these days) -- #PS4NoParity -- from fans accusing Ubisoft of dumbing the game down on Sony's platform to achieve console parity (Ubisoft have since refuted that notion). The ire from PS4 owners is somewhat understandable, consoles are an investment after all, and if you can only afford one, you want to try and make sure it's the best one, with the expectation that games will be optimised for the £300-400 machine you just bought. Of course, it's entirely possible that Ubisoft felt that this might be the correct move for the game -- trying to locate a graphical sweet spot that would please everybody while ensuring that all of Unity's systems could run smoothly and without compromise.

But we're not in the business of making excuses for publishing leviathans with triple-A titles coming out of their pores.

First up, we chat about the misadventures of Yogventures, and the cool half million down the drain from the ill-fated Yogscast Kickstarter game. Then we have a rather length natter about the ethics of YouTubers taking money from developers and whether or not there really is all that much difference between reviewers and an opinionated Let's Play aficionado when it comes down to influencing an audience and the ethics of responsibility.

Also on this week's podcast, we chat about Microsoft's plans to dissolve Xbox Entertainment, and check in with Star Citizen as the funding push almost hits $50 million.
