"When things change, I prefer the way it was, and when things don't change, I get bored. I guess I have a twisted mind." - NPC, Driftveil Continental Hotel 23F
That sly in-game dig sums up the biggest problem facing our favourite franchises. Changing too much can remove what we loved from the series. Changing too little is a recipe for malaise and boredom. When approaching a mid-generation Pokemon title, Game Freak usually tries to find balance by falling back on an age old trope: releasing a slightly improved copy of the existing two games and calling it a day. See also: Yellow, Emerald and Crystal. For the fifth generation, however, Game Freak decided to produce direct sequels to Black and White rather than a revamp. Two years have passed since the events of the previous two games, meaning that much has changed and much has stayed the same.
The result is two of the most compelling, balanced, value-packed and mechanically refined Pokemon games to date... and yet, also two of the least memorable.
Or perhaps I suffer from a "twisted mind?"

Pokemon Black & White 2 stubbornly refused to make the jump from DS to 3DS, which came as a disappointment to many of us. Even though it would have limited the size of the install base, Nintendo's year-old handheld provides a wealth of potential for the franchise to tap into; not just in terms of upgraded 3D visuals and high fidelity audio, but the promise of bringing Augmented Reality to the Pokemon experience. The idea of using the 3DS' twin cameras to conduct battles on the street, playground or workplace is thoroughly intoxicating, even for lapsed fans such as myself.
Realising this, however, Creatures Inc. and Game Freak have released a cheap and cheerful app that leverages augmented reality to allow 3DS owners to capture some rare Pokemon in the comfort of their own living room. I'm still grinding through Pokemon White to deliver our ultimate verdict (sorry, it was either that or XCOM: Enemy Unknown), but for now, here's our take on its inexpensive AR companion.

The winners of this year's Pokemon World Championships, to be held in Hawaii next month, will have their physical appearance and teams added to Pokemon Black & White 2 via Spotpass Wi-Fi connection. These battles will take place in the Pokemon World Tournament, a designated arena new to the series. We hope that this is just the tip of a content iceberg, and that Nintendo will continue to regularly add more features to the game throughout its lifespan. Well, we can dream.
Pokemon Black & White 2 was recently locked down for an October 12th launch.
At long last, Nintendo has confirmed (via Twitter) that Pokemon Black & White 2 will hit British shores on October 12th. It will be complimented by Dream Radar: a downloadable eShop app that allows players to capture rare Pokemon using Augmented Reality and motion control features, who can then be transferred into the base game.
As a DS title, Pokemon Black & White 2 will be compatible with all DS and 3DS consoles, but has no 3D functionality.
The latest episode of Pokémon Smash revealed new footage from Pokémon Black/White 2 over the weekend, showing off some battles featuring the game's new legendary Pokémon: Keldeo.
The debut trailer for Pokemon Black/White 2 has emerged, giving gamers a little glimpse at some of the latest footage. It's all in Japanese, but that's frankly almost fitting, and you can get the gist of what's going on anyway.

Nintendo has officially announced that the next Pokemon games will be direct sequels to Black and White, unimaginatively titled Pokemon Black and White 2. This is a first for the franchise, but more surprisingly, Nintendo has also announced that Black and White 2 will be DS titles rather than the series' first foray onto the 3DS proper. While some may balk at the move, there's no denying that the 3DS' 4-5 hour battery life is probably nowhere near powerful enough to support a Pokemon game - especially since you'll want to take it everywhere.
Shame, though, because the 3DS' Augmented Reality could have been a brave new opportunity for the long-running Game Freak powerhouse.
Pokemon Black and White 2 have been confirmed for an Autumn release in the UK.
