Evolve's desperate pre-purchase bonuses are monstrously worrying

I hate pre-order bonuses.

We complained about games releasing buggy and broken last year, moaning about the plethora of half-baked, pitiful excuses and the all-too-visible corporate policy of certain companies that was haemorrhaging into their titles. But we were all to blame, all of us complicit in the burgeoning, ubiquitous pre-order culture that allows companies to make budget projections far in advance, and then screw over whoever and whatever they need to in order to hit their projected deadlines.

Pre-order bonuses, of course, have been the sweetener, the bait for the early adopter. Invest early you blind fool, companies have said, and get free DLC, get free customisation items, enjoy these perks that you can't get anywhere else. It has been galling and miserable to watch, and it has been depressingly effective. We wondered aloud just how much more will be snipped off of games to allow for this duplicitous process, how many more features fenced off and restricted to those willing to stump up cash early and pay to play something they've no idea is any good or not.

Enter Evolve, a game clearly desperate for attention.

Evolve's desperate pre-purchase bonuses are monstrously worrying

You have to feel sorry in a way for Turtle Rock. They game they built fell off of the map last year and missed its planned release date. The Big Alpha was a big mess, with dubious netcode issues, and plentiful worries about balancing and longevity. Where's the rest of the game, people asked, and rightly so. Then they realised that they hadn't actually shown people why on Earth this thing deserved it's full price, and finally unleashed a barrage of information explaining how there were more characters, more monsters, more modes, and more reasons to play... hopefully.

Here's the thing, though. To use those new characters and the Wraith without grinding, you'll have to pre-purchase the game. Not pre-order... pre-purchase.

COMMENT | The Pre-Order Problem: Is 2015 The End Of The Line?

2015 is set to be a huge year for videogames and an expensive year for gamers. After taking a while to get up to speed, the new console generation should be shifting into gear next month and gathering serious momentum.

While the last twelve months have undeniably delivered some great games, there's also no denying that many of us will be keen to leave 2014's swathe of broken, deceptively marketed and overhyped titles behind. So it's probably time we talked about pre-orders then.

COMMENT | The Pre-Order Problem: Is 2015 The End Of The Line?

The subject of pre-orders has come up countless times in our podcasts and articles over the last few years, but even if you're not a regular, you'll know that pledging to buy videogames before they've even created has become a hot-button issue. Games releasing broken or not resembling their marketing materials is bad enough, while publishers have locked into the business practice so hard that games are being split up just to force fans to do it. Pre-orders are a tough subject to tackle, especially since, on paper, they're completely pointless and don't benefit us in any way whatsoever.

Should we do it? If so, how should we pre-order videogames? And which should we pre-order? Let's try to find some answers.

GameStop's planned involvement with game development would be a disaster for creatives and consumers alike

GameStop's planned involvement with game development would be a disaster for creatives and consumers alike

We've long railed against this industry's tendencies towards pre-ordering here on this site. Most recently, we saw five different collector's editions for Watch Dogs, one or two of them filling the reward of pre-order special editions. This has been common for some time: pre-order a game from a certain retailer, get some bonus swag thrown in for free. Usually it's a character skin or perhaps a shiny, golden weapon. But every so often, it might prove to be something meaningful -- a map or two, free DLC, gameplay content not to be found in other versions of the game.

When that happens, publishers and retailers wheel out the phrase "giving consumers choices". But that's utter rubbish. What they've done is slice bits off of the top in a truly anti-consumer move, and muddied the waters of convenience. These days, it's not uncommon to pay full price for 95% of a game.

In short, when retailers get involved with anything other than game distribution and sales, it's a little suspect.

GameStop's planned involvement with game development would be a disaster for creatives and consumers alike

Imagine our joy, then, at discovering that GameStop is preparing to get its sticky fingers even stickier. The world's largest games retailer is apparently looking to become more involved in the development processes of big games. GameStop execs recently met with investment company R.W. Baird to talk about their place in the games industry currently, along with plans for the future. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian has recently revealed, via VentureBeat, "that the brick-and-mortar chain wants to find ways to give customers more value when they preorder games."

A Game of Dwarves Pre-Orders Open, Offer Free Ale Pack DLC

Before you get too exited, no that headline does not mean that Paradox will deliver you beer should you pre-order A Game of Dwarves. However, you can indeed pre-order the game from today, with an RRP set at a very reasonable $9.99 for the Dwaf Fortress-meets-Dungeon Keeper dig-em-up, and doing so will gift you the Ale Pack DLC that adds the le Tree and Mead Barrel to your dwarven inventory.

As you'd expect, both items do much to raise the happiness levels of your subterranean, cavernous kingdom, because, let's face it, a drunk dwarf is a happy dwarf.

Fresh Dead Space 3 Vid Sees Isaac All Alone Once More

...Except For The Hideous Flesh-Eating Monsters

Visceral Games have delivered a fat slab of singleplayer gameplay footage from Dead Space 3 that appear to feature a pleasing lack of obnoxious meathead John Carver. In fact, we'd go so far as to say that this video looks more like Ded Space than a Necromorph-stuffed Lost Planet, which is thankful indeed.
