Project Gotham Racing 4 £4.85 @ ShopTo [Xbox 360 Games]

Project Gotham Racing 4 gives you the opportunity to screech around the streets of world famous cities, some of which have been included in previous instalments of the series such as London, others are brand new to the series like St. Petersburg and Shanghai.

ShopTo are parting with copies of the game for £4.85, which is just over £2 cheaper than the next best price of £6.98 coming in from Gameplay and Gamestation.

When you consider the fact that most of the recent racing games have a list of playable cars that all seem to go on and on, it’s a little bit disappointing that this game only contains 130 vehicles. Luckily though, the chance to get behind two wheels instead of four adds a bit of variety to the experience, and in some cases building up speed on the motorbikes is far more exciting.

As you work your way through the different tracks you really notice the difference between them and they’ve been designed to provide you with a bit of variety whilst you’re racing, so you won’t get bored and feel like your playing through the same section of track that’s connected up by a few bends that crop up every now and then.

It pays off to learn the lay of the land and the controls on your dashboard so you can glide into first place, as there are a number of unloackables including customisable clothing, more vehicles, and extra tracks.

The new weather system is incredibly unpredictable, at one moment bright sunshine might well be reflected off your bonnet, then it’ll start pouring with rain at which point you’ll have to approach bends with a bit more caution, and finally it could start snowing and the grip your vehicle previously had on the track’ll go out of the window.

Whilst thrashing the AI in single player is good fun, multiplayer offers you a greater challenge and it’s far more rewarding to know that you’ve beaten a real person. There are a range of modes including ‘Bulldog’, during which one player will have to tear around the track tagging everyone else.

Even if you’re not the biggest car enthusiast in the world, you should definitely give Project Gotham Racing 4 a go now the price tag’s under £5.

Family Games Pack – Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts/Viva Pinata/Project Gotham Racing 4: £19.99 @ Argos [Xbox 360 Games]

Family Games Pack Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts/Viva Pinata/Project Gotham Racing 4: £19.99 @ Argos [Xbox 360 Games]

Here at Dealspwn we’re all about value for money, so when a merchant bundles three awesome games together into a meaty discounted package we tend to take note. Today we’re talking about two of Rare’s finest recent games – Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and Viva Pinata – and slick’n’speedy racer Project Gotham 4.

Individually, you’re looking at paying just over £26 for these three –  PGR4 (£6.89 – Gameplay), Banjo-Kazooie (£11.99 – Amazon Jersey) and Viva Pinata (£7.89 – Simply Games). But Argos are offering these three family-friendly titles for just £19.99, saving you over £6.

I’ve had the chance to get to grips with all of these games, and I can safely say that they’re all pretty good. PGR4 will certainly keep racing fans and petrolheads happy with its exceptional speed, handling, large stable and impressive weather effects. The graphics are perhaps a little dated when stood next to Forza 3, but it’s still a very good looking game and highly recommended for quick bursts of four-wheeled fun.

Viva Pinata is classic Rare: bright, colourful, well designed and with a wry sense of humour under the surface. The game’s charm is in its simplicity: you are tasked with turning a muddy patch of land into a beautiful garden and attracting increasingly weird and wonderful candy-stuffed animals to set up home and procreate. There are little maze-driven mini-games for when the piñata get together to mate, and you’ll spend time driving off predatory fiends and sour piñata. You’ll have to break up the odd neighbourly fight between residents and make sure that you’re garden is adorned with the best flora and fauna to attract the rare species of piñata. It’s all very leisurely and it doesn’t sound hugely enticing, but then you look up and you realise you’ve been playing for five hours straight.

Unfortunately, Banjo-Kazooie’s latest outing isn’t quite the triumphant return of Rare to platform games that many (including me) were hoping for. I can’t say that I found the game terribly gripping and I downright loathed the fiddly control system, but my biggest issue was that I expected the game to be something that it wasn’t. Approached with an open mind, Nuts and Bolts is actually a pretty fun title with massively customisable vehicles taking the place of the duo’s special moves and transformations. Don’t go in expecting a normal platformer and you might well be pleasantly surprised. The Rare sense of humour is back in full swing, it’s an excellently polished and well-presented game, but N64-series fans might be disappointed.

Project Gotham Racing 4 £7.99 @ Choices UK [Xbox 360 Game]

Burn rubber in the virtual universe of Project Gotham Racing 4 and enjoy brand-new weather features and two-wheeled vehicles, now available from Choices-UK for only £7.99!

Whizzed around a price-comparison, Choices-UK’s offer for Project Gotham Racing 4 lapped the competition as the cheapest around, with a four-pound saving! Quite probably the final entry from developers Bizarre, who’ve developed the series from the beginning, Project Gotham Racing 4 earned an impressive 85/100 on MetaCritic, with Jolt Online Gaming awarding the game a perfect score and stating “it’s hard to imagine Bizarre Creations ever compiling a better package, or a better advert for racing on the 360”.

Project Gotham Racing 4 is more of an evolution than a revolution of the series. It features several new additions to the Gotham formula, with successful racers gathering a loyal following who’ll cheer their favourite blur around the track. A dynamic weather system is also included, as rain pelts the slick asphalt, snow storms blurring the distance and choking the tyres. Bizarre updates the physics, so cars react accordingly to these unexpected changes in surface friction and density.

The most scrutinised addition to Project Gotham Racing 4, however, is the inclusion of motorbikes into the standard car roster, with nippy but vulnerable two-wheelers competing with their larger, sturdier cousins. The handling of the bikes is obviously different to the cars, with the series again balancing arcade gameplay with realistic physics.
