Del Toro’s Development, Ninty’s Lost £495,000,000 and the Rise Of The PS3 – News Roundup 29th July 2010

Guillermo del Toro to Develop Several Games

Del Toros Development, Nintys Lost £495,000,000 and the Rise Of The PS3 News Roundup 29th July 2010

Guillermo del Toro, director of the Hellboy series and spectacular cult classic Pan’s Labyrinth, is about to get into gaming in a big way. According to press statements made to MTV, Toro will soon announce a “big deal with a big company”- which involves the director collaborating on several “games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting.”

Del Toro’s epic creature and art design will lend themselves perfectly to a videogame… and if it has anything to do with the upcoming Lovecraft adaptation Mountains of Madness, we could be in for some seriously impressive survival horror outings. Or the most bizarre Kinect fitness games ever produced. To whet your appetite, why not try out  the freakishly bizarre Zeno Clash[MTV]

Ninty Sales Collapse: Wii Up, £495,000,000 Down

Del Toros Development, Nintys Lost £495,000,000 and the Rise Of The PS3 News Roundup 29th July 2010

Nintendo has released its first quarter financials… and I’m afraid to say that things have taken an unprecedented turn for the worse since 2009. Whilst Wii hardware sales have increased by 36% since this time last year, their profits have all but vanished. Their net income for the quarter was minus 25.2 billion yen (minus £185 million), standing in stark contrast with last year’s Q1 profit of 42.3 billion (£310 million). This equates to a decrease of 60.2%… and a difference of £495 million compared to the three months ending June last year.

This is Nintendo’s lowest first-quarter operating profit in five years- and there’s a fair few factors at play here. European and Stateside sales account for over four fifths of Nintendo’s overall income- and the recession hit both the dollar and pound sterling incredibly hard. Rampant piracy (now hopefully curbed by the ban on R4 cards in the UK) also has a role in Nintendo’s financial hammering. According to Reuters, Nintendo have yet to change their profit forecast for the entire year, hoping that the 3DS and a “next-gen Wii” will be able to shift a fair few units.

The only silver lining is the epic sales that Nintendo’s classic franchises managed to attract. Super Mario Galaxy 2 netted over £4.09 million by itself- and it’s likely that they’ll need to step up their first party output. Bizarrely, they’ve delayed the European release of Kirby’s Epic Yarn until 2011. [Reuters]

Continuing the theme of Japanese financial woe, Capcom has also announced a 90.4% profit crater year on year. It’s clear that Japanese developers and publishers will need to innovate and adapt to survive… which arguably may not be a bad thing.

PS3 on the Rise, Snapping At Microsoft’s Heels

Del Toros Development, Nintys Lost £495,000,000 and the Rise Of The PS3 News Roundup 29th July 2010

Just to rub it in the faces of Nintendo and Capcom, Sony has announced a 118% rise in PS3 sales this quarter- and are closing the gap with worldwide Xbox 360 sales. Microsoft’s console stands at 41.7 million global sales… with Sony nipping at their heels with 38.1 million.

Every year without fail, Sony execs and fans proudly announce that it’s the “year of the PS3″… and never quite managed to make it happen. Now, however, it looks like their age of Aquarius is actually be starting to materialise.

Oh, and PSP sales slumped, much to the surprise of absolutely no-one at all. Sony’s failure to secure consistent 3rd party software support and terrible advertising has crippled the handheld- which is a shame, considering its incredible hardware and potential. [via VG247]

You know you want to get involved in this one. Is this the year of the PS3? Will Sony’s holiday and 2011  lineup seal the deal for the hardware giant? Have your say in the comments!

Shogun 2: Total War Trailered, Looks Awesome

Del Toros Development, Nintys Lost £495,000,000 and the Rise Of The PS3 News Roundup 29th July 2010

Sega has released a new trailer for Shogun 2: Total War- and it’s looking mighty fine indeed. Whilst it purports to be in-game footage, it actually appears to be taken from a CG cutscene, but you’ll get the idea. Expect enormous battles, some tough tactical decisions and a little diplomacy to keep your enemies guessing.

From R4 Outlaws to Michael Jackson: Zombie Killer – News Roundup 28th July 2010

R4 Emulator/Piracy Devices Now Illegal in the UK

From R4 Outlaws to Michael Jackson: Zombie Killer News Roundup 28th July 2010

R4’s range of DS cards provide Nintendo’s handheld with a range of multimedia and homebrew applications… but also allow the entire games lineup to be pirated and downloaded for free. Nintendo has previously blamed piracy for a 50% decrease in European sales- and has been aggressively pushing for R4’s devices to be outlawed in the UK. Today, they’ve finally succeeded.

A UK judge has made a landmark ruling to ban the entire range of R4 products. Whilst it’s still technically legal to own an R4 device, it’s now illegal to advertise, stock or sell the cards. Naturally, downloading and playing ROMs is still absolutely against the law… even for games you have legally purchased. Many people make this mistake.

On the one hand, we will salute any company for successfully defending their intellectual rights and hardworking developers. However, there’s no denying that the R4 cards are a minority device that still requires (and incentivizes) people to buy a DS in the first place. Better not tell Nintendo about the Dingoo A320, then… [Develop Online]

Michael Jackson Dance Game Will Sell 1m; Estate Kills Moonwalking Zombie

From R4 Outlaws to Michael Jackson: Zombie Killer News Roundup 28th July 2010

The King of Pop may be dead and buried… but he’s dominating the news today. Ubisoft has predicted that Michael Jackson: The Experience, the upcoming multiplatform dance title featuring songs and videos from the late singer, will shift over a million copies.

“We feel that this title will definitely be a million-seller. We hope that it will be one of the bigger titles for this Christmas season. It’s a unique game in its genre, allowing fans to step into the shoes of Michael Jackson.” -UK MD Rob Cooper to MCV

They’re probably right. Partly because MJ has a solid selection of songs, partly because his death has immortalised the music and mainly because the game’s coming out on every home console, household appliance and electrical device out there.

Secondly, and somewhat more pettily, the Michael Jackson estate has ‘objected’ to the awesome Thriller zombie in PopCap’s massively popular Plants vs Zombies.

“The Estate of Michael Jackson objected to our use of the ‘dancing zombie’ in PLANTS vs. ZOMBIES based on its view that the zombie too closely resembled Michael Jackson.”

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right. PopCap have agreed to remove the offending undead from the iPhone version and upcoming XBLA port- as well as replacing him in title updates for existing versions. This seems like a massive overreaction to a good-natured Easter egg and free publicity that’s been around for a while… and you have to wonder if Ubisoft’s advised them to do it. [MTV]

Valve: “Who Knows” about Left 4 Dead PS3?

From R4 Outlaws to Michael Jackson: Zombie Killer News Roundup 28th July 2010

Valve’s love knows no bounds- and since E3, they’ve even finally welcomed the Sony crowd into the fold. PR Head Honcho Doug Lombardi has revealed that Valve will be taking a ‘wait and see approach’ when it comes to porting some of the big name 360 exclusives titles over to the PS3.

“Who knows what the future will bring?”

In other news, Lombardi reiterated that Portal 2 will not use Playstation Move or 3D support. I’m afraid that the game’s just going to have to stand on its own merits without resorting to expensive new tech. To be honest, I’m not really that disappointed… [PSM via CVG]

From Britain’s Gaming Nation to Milo’s Mystery – News Roundup 29th June 2010

It’s Official: We’re a Nation of Gamers!

From Britains Gaming Nation to Milos Mystery News Roundup 29th June 2010

Have you ever felt that your gaming hobby somehow ostracized you or set you apart from the majority? You couldn’t be more wrong…or in better company. According to a new ELSPA survey, 32% of the British population are gamers. What’s more, a staggering 74% of 16-19 year olds and 60% of 20-24 year olds identified themselves as gamers.

To put this in perspective, this means that there are over 19 and a half million gamers in Britain… which is almost three times the population of London. This number will only increase through the next decade considering the enormous youth fraction; frankly, in 10-20 years, games could well be as ubiquitous as television (thus rendering the term ‘gamer’ completely defunct!).

This enormous percentage, especially in the 16-24 age group, is partly due to the rise of the mobile and casual market; as well as improved publicity, advertising quality of games these days. Mike Rawlinson, Director of ELSPA, also cites the popularity of motion controls as a contributing factor.

“In the last few years the development of motion sensor technology saw gaming become more accessible to new audiences who didn’t previously connect with the industry. With the growth of gaming platforms such as social networking sites and the iPhone, we are witnessing once again the growth of gaming into new areas of society, truly showing that the UK is a nation of gamers.”

Damn right. I’m proud to live in a gaming nation- and so should you. [Gamesindustry]

Microsoft: Project Milo is Not A Game

From Britains Gaming Nation to Milos Mystery News Roundup 29th June 2010

Oh, Milo. Peter Molyneux’s controversial child simulator has been feeding Kinect skeptics and Sony fanboys for some time now- but apparently Milo and Kate won’t be a game in their own right. According to Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg, Milo is simply a tech demo that won’t go to market in its own right.

“Last year we unveiled the Project Natal technology, we showed a bunch of technology demos as part of that. And obviously [Milo] is a technology demo that continues to exist, but right now it’s not a game that we’re planning to bring to market.”

Fair enough. It’s probably for the best, really- and it’s certainly what we’ve previously suspected. I can’t even begin to imagine how interacting with Milo could be anything resembling fun. Impressive and creepy, maybe… but not fun. [Kotaku AU]

However, Molyneux’s set to show off Milo and Kate at the TED Global Seminar on July 13th- and possibly the mysterious title that their software will factor into. Naturally, we’ll keep you posted.

From McGee’s Shovel Love to Remastered PS2 Classics – News Roundup 28th June 2010

American McGee: Kinect Shovelware is The Way Forward

From McGees Shovel Love to Remastered PS2 Classics News Roundup 28th June 2010

Whilst our recent Game Buzz savagely laid into Kinect’s marketing machine and launch lineup, it appears that the potential for half-assed shovelware is getting a few people excited. And the leader of the charge might surprise you. Famed developer American McGee (of Alice and id fame) has spoken out in defence of…well… half-assed shovelware.

“Shovelware plague? If a “plague” brought with it success and riches beyond my wildest dreams I’d hardly deride it.”

Nor would I think of altering the plague in hopes of re-creating that success the came with it. If plague equals success, then more plague, please! Makes me wonder… are they launching a platform or an ideal?”

The Wii certainly proved (at least, for a while) that shovelware can shift consoles- but I’m personally unsure about whether following in Nintendo’s footsteps is the right idea for Microsoft’s exciting new platform. After all, Nintendo already has the target audience firmly in their camp- and it’s up to Kinect to cater for a slightly more mature and demanding class of gamer in my opinion. [Now Gamer]

The ball’s in your court, folks. After all, your money is going to decide whether Kinect succeeds or falls by the wayside! Is shovelware a good business model? Is it even a good thing? Have your say in the comments!

Nintendo 3DS Will Be Released Next Year. Maybe.

From McGees Shovel Love to Remastered PS2 Classics News Roundup 28th June 2010

After several reputable retailers suggested a holiday season release, Nintendo’s top brass has spoken out to confirm that the 3DS will be hitting stores next year instead. Whilst we currently believe that Japan will receive the 3DS in time for Christmas, the official line is that Europe and the States will have to wait until March.

However, some fairly solid rumours are still abounding about whether Reggie’s actually on the level with his projected 2011 release date. Apparently several Ninty sources are still convinced that the 3DS will be ready for a holiday release. Watch this space! [Gamesindustry]

More HD PS2 Games Headed to PS3

From McGees Shovel Love to Remastered PS2 Classics News Roundup 28th June 2010

Sony polled a few regulars while back to see whether we’d be interested in seeing more reskinned and revamped versions of PS2 classics on the PS3. Turns out that yes, yes we would. A thousand times yes. SCE President Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that a concerted is now currently in the works.

“So we are looking to continue to do these HD conversions. We are looking into ways how we can deliver the PS2 library to PS3 consumers, but were are not ready to announce anything yet.”

Short, to the point and refreshingly free of non-denials and management speak. This is happening. Currently, Sony have announced that The Sly Cooper Collection’s in the works… and Team ICO’s almost certainly got an HD ICO and Shadow of the Colossus pack in the offing. It’s about time. [IGN]

So, what old-school classics do you want to be given a new lease of HD life? I can think of a fair few myself…and please remember that FFVII was on the original Playstation. I’d be happy with Zone of the Enders and a Gran Turismo collection myself…

From Shigsy’s Terror to Total War – News Roundup 3rd June 2010

Miyamoto “Threatened” By Move and Natal

From Shigsys Terror to Total War News Roundup 3rd June 2010

When Microsoft and Sony first announced their foray into the motion-control business, Nintendo were all smiles and scorn. Stating that they were embarrassed and flattered by the competitors’ attempts to mimic the wiimote, both Shigsy and Reggie were happy to slag off their rivals and seemed outwardly apathetic about the whole thing. Unfortunately, it now seems that they were putting on a brave face for the media.

Nintendo’s complacency has slowly been souring into unbridled fear and paranoia with each new Move and Natal update, replacing smug detachment with a creeping sense of dread and bloodcurdling terror. Well, at least a healthy change of perspective anyways. In an interview with Edge, Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that Nintendo are more than a little worried by the upcoming Mo-Con revolution.

“Whenever something we have created and presented is followed by copies, we always feel it is threatening. More than that, we’re concerned that others are trying to do something similar for the sake of it. It’s not encouraging to Nintendo.”

You’ve changed your tune, Shigsy. Nintendo’s making a habit of publicly underestimating their competition- after all, they were quick to dismiss Apple’s iPad and iPhone as potential competition yet are now scared stiff by the “threat” that they apparently pose. [EDGE via VG247]

Is Miyamoto right to be worried? Will Move and Natal deliver a killing blow to Nintendo’s Mo-Con monopoly…or hammer home the fact that the Wii provides all the minigame collections we really need? Have your say in the comments!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 won’t beat MW2…

From Shigsys Terror to Total War News Roundup 3rd June 2010

Battlefield Bad Company 2 has been a roaring success, shifting over 5 million units and providing gamers with a stupendous multiplayer experience. However, DICE were up front about their aspirations to beat CoD: Modern Warfare in terms of brand recognition and sales- but it appears that they won’t quite manage it this time. In an interview with MCV, UK GM Keith Ramsdale took a wistful look back at Bad Company 2’s reception and sales success.

“It’s been great. The press reaction has been focused largely on how good the multiplayer is. It’s now recognised as genre defining, and the way the market’s going, that’s key. Are we going to beat Modern Warfare sales this year with any single title? No. But do we have a long-term goal of taking more market share or possibly growing the market? Yes.”

Then again, he who laughs last laughs hardest. Infinity Ward is a shrivelled depressing husk of its former self- and DICE have a great team and years of experience to draw upon for the next Battlefield outing. [MCV]

In other news, a large PS3 patch will be hitting the servers later today. It’ll fix and improve a range of issues including increased teamkill penalties, trophy tweaks. Get the full details here.

Shogun II: Total War Confirmed

From Shigsys Terror to Total War News Roundup 3rd June 2010

Creative Assembly has jumped the E3 gun and confirmed that Shogun II: Total War is on the way. According to hands-on early impressions, the sequel will deliver a number of new features including powerful heroes, huge-scale siege battles, improved naval warfare and a tighter focus on singleplayer story elements.

Eight-player battle royales and personal hero avatars may also be making an appearance, making tactical precision and battlefield awareness more important than ever. It’s still in the pre-alpha stage, so we can’t expect to lead our troops into battle until Q1 2011 at the earliest. [1UP]

Bungie Shacks Up With Activision, Kratos vs Odin, Sony Sued and Game Room Sucks – News Roundup April 29th 2010

Bungie and Activision Pen 10 Year Exclusivity Deal

[Activision]

Well this one is a little bizarre. In the midst of the avalanche of defections from bonus-cheated Infinity Ward comes the news that long-time Microsoft partners and Halo developers Bungie have signed a ten year exclusivity publishing contract with Activision.

“Bungie is one of the premier studios in our industry and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with their talented team over the next decade,” stated Thomas Tippl, Acti COO.
“Bungie has developed some of the most compelling and successful games, multiplayer experiences and thriving fan communities, and this alliance underscores our long-standing commitment to foster the industry’s best creative talent. Our unprecedented partnership with Bungie will enable us to broaden our pipeline of exciting new games as we continue to strengthen our industry position and pursue long-term growth opportunities.”

Nine months in the making, this deal is particularly noteworthy because of its specificity: Activision will only have the rights to publish games based on new intellectual property from Bungie with the development company to remain independent, retaining all ownership rights of any new IP. It was assumed in the wake of 2007’s split with Microsoft, that Microsoft would retain first right of refusal on any future projects and it’s unclear why or even if they passed on this, but then again Bungie have been chomping at the bit to go multiplatform for some time now and its not inconceivable that they might have more than one future project in the pipeline.

It’s certainly a strange sequence of events and we’ll keep you posted as the story develops, but what are your initial thoughts on the matter? Is this a good move for Bungie, or should there be alarm bells ringing? Let us know your opinions in the comments box below. [Joystiq]

GoW3 Dev Boss Reveals Alternate Endings…

Bungie Shacks Up With Activision, Kratos vs Odin, Sony Sued and Game Room Sucks News Roundup April 29th 2010

Spoilers Ahead. You have been warned.

Stig Asmussen, God of War’s development pit boss, has spilt the beans on the alternate ending of GoW3 as well as the possible future story arc of the franchise. Apparently, the ending was originally supposed to foreshadow Kratos’ intention to take on the Norse pantheon in future releases.

“…basically, you destroy Greek mythology and then Norse mythology is right around the corner. That’s the next thing that Kratos would go after. It becomes clear at the end that he’s going to become this harbinger of death across different mythologies in the world and maybe carry the series on from there.”- Stig Asmussen, Gamepro Interview

Cory Barlog also floated the idea of Kratos becoming the Grim Reaper at the end of GoW3.

David Jaffe, the designer behind the ‘Nordic’ ending, twittered the following in response to the Gamepro interview (as reported by Kotaku).

“I assure you my story was not as simple as Kratos going after the Norse gods. There is an element of truth but it goes far beyond.”

“I love Cory, he rocks. But that was my idea. Blades of Chaos becomes the Scythe of the Reaper. BUT still, lots more. Up2Sony2reveal.”

Sony would be mad to let the franchise die after GoW3 reached ‘killer app’ status… and according to Jaffe’s twitter posts, it’s “Up2Sony” to clue us in on how the story will progress. There’s clearly a sequel in the works. We’ve got our money on Kratos instigating Ragnarok. [Gamepro]

Sony Sued over OtherOS Removal

Bungie Shacks Up With Activision, Kratos vs Odin, Sony Sued and Game Room Sucks News Roundup April 29th 2010

We called it. Sony is now facing a class action lawsuit from Californian resident Anthony Ventura after update 3.21 removed OtherOS… even though they previously insisted that it wouldn’t be removed (we called that one as well, but who’s counting?). Ventura is seeking compensation “including but not limited to compensatory damages; restitution; injuctive relief; attorneys’ fees; and the cost of this suit,” which could be around 5 million dollars if the court documents are to be believed.

The removal of OtherOS contravenes EU consumer laws (allowing several European residents to claim refunds), but customer protection is much weaker stateside. It’ll be very interesting to see how he gets on. [Gamesindustry.biz]

New Game Room Titles Delayed Indefinitely

Bungie Shacks Up With Activision, Kratos vs Odin, Sony Sued and Game Room Sucks News Roundup April 29th 2010

I want to love Game Room, Microsoft’s attempt to bring classic arcade titles to the masses. I just wish that they’d stop making it so damn difficult! The promised update would’ve brought a number of new games to the table yesterday (including Super Breakout, a personal favourite), but Xbox Live’s European spokesman has revealed that it’s been delayed “until further notice.”

“The latest batch of Game Room content has also been delayed until further notice – I’ll let you know once a new date is confirmed.”

This is likely due to copyright issues as well as the recent sacking of 50 Krome employees. [VG247]

It’s time for a rant. Game Room is a great idea in theory, but the current game selection is horrendously overpriced and pathetically weak when compared to the fantastic arcade titles that’re already available on XBLA. Contra? Metal Slug? Virtual On? Samurai Shodown 2? Street Fighter 2? They’re all on XBLA as we speak… for around the same price.

Cross-platform connectivity is great fun (as I love earning Lunar Lander achievements on my laptop when I’m away from my 360), but if Microsoft doesn’t ensure a slew of big-name titles, integrate the existing XBLA lineup into Game Room and reorganise the pricing structure then it’s doomed to fail. Krome needs to shape up or ship out before the service truly becomes the laughing stock of downloadable games. Then again, thanks to its launch day glitch and lineup… it probably already is.

Psyched for Kratos’ next hinted adventure? Wanna leap to Game Room’s defence (or slag it off some more)? Drop us a line in the comments!

From OtherOS Refund to Pokemon Reveal – News Roundup 9th April 2010

Pokemon Black and White to be Revealed April 15th

From OtherOS Refund to Pokemon Reveal News Roundup 9th April 2010

Nintendo have announced that the next true Pokemon sequels will be entitled Black and White. Whilst they’re not giving much away, my rudimentary knowledge of Japanese suggests that more beans will be spilled on April 15th. Black and White will also be released on the DS rather than the 3DS, though it will naturally be backwards-compatible.

After the excellent remake of Gold and Silver, Nintendo will be under pressure to deliver a revolutionary Pokemon experience rather than another retread of familiar ground. Frankly, the DS could probably support a Pokemon Stadium-style 3D battle system… but knowing GAME FREAK, they’ll probably just introduce a Light type to counter Dark types. Pokemon Ebony and Ivory would’ve been a more interesting name, mind. Stevie Wonder, I choose you! [Pokemon B&W reveal]

PS3 Owner Nets Partial Refund for OtherOS Removal

From OtherOS Refund to Pokemon Reveal News Roundup 9th April 2010

The recent removal of OtherOS with system update 3.21 has been causing an inordinate amount of controversy, but a PS3 owner has apparently received a full refund because the neutered console isn’t fit for task. Using European Directive 1999/44/EC (which states that  goods “must
be fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase.”), the irked Sony customer was able to net an £84 refund from Amazon without needing to return the console.

This could well set a worrying precedent for Sony, though customer protection is much weaker in the States than Europe. Expect to see a fair few class action suits in the coming months. Apparently, OtherOS is worth £84. [Playstation University]

In other 3.21 news, Geohot (the prolific hacker that was arguably responsible for Sony’s knee-jerk reaction) has rigged up some custom firmware to salvage OtherOS. Looks like he made good on his promise.

Gears of War 3 Dated April 2011

From OtherOS Refund to Pokemon Reveal News Roundup 9th April 2010

Let’s face it: we all know that Gears 3 is in the pipeline. After all, we were promised a trilogy… and the 360 needs this exclusive as badly as Suda51 needs a padded studio with adequate bathroom facilities. Rumours have been flying around the internet for the last few days (sparked by an abortive Jimmy Fallon interview), but an impatient tech at Xbox Live HQ has jumped the gun by releasing a dashboard advert.

A picture tells a thousand words. Expect Gears 3 to hit this time next year. [Kotaku]

From Eyeball Pong to Influential Gamers – Easter Weekend News Roundup 2010

Students Create Eye Movement Peripheral

From Eyeball Pong to Influential Gamers Easter Weekend News Roundup 2010

Who needs a PS3, Xbox or Wii with their fancy new peripherals… when the grandfather of gaming now sports the coolest input method of all time (apart from Steel Batallion, of course). Undergraduate students at Imperial College London have created a staggering piece of neurotechnology that allows Pong to be played simply by moving their eyes… on a budget.

The premise is simple: a webcam monitors eye movement and a clever piece of biometry software  syncs the motion to the game. But don’t take my word for it…

“Remarkably, our undergraduates have created this piece of neurotechnology using bits of kit that you can buy in a shop, such as webcams.”

“The game that they’ve developed is quite simple, but we think it has enormous potential, particularly because it doesn’t need lots of expensive equipment.”- Mr. Faisal, ICL Bioengineering Team Supervisor

The implications are huge. Sure, at the moment it’s only Pong… but what if the same low-cost concept could be applied to a motorised wheelchair? Or speech software. Or a smarthouse. Who said that games never helped anyone? [The Hindu via VG247]

Penny Arcade and Molyneux more Influential than Clinton (Time Poll)

From Eyeball Pong to Influential Gamers Easter Weekend News Roundup 2010

Time Magazine is currently running an online poll to determine the year’s most influential people… and it appears that gamers have been making their mark. Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the founders and talent behind Penny Arcade, are currently ranked at number 43- closely followed by Lionhead/Natal dev Peter Molyneux at number 44 [at the time of writing- Ed]. This places them above such luminaries as Bill Clinton, Arnie, Clint Eastwood, Steve Jobs and over 150 others.

Then again, Lady Gaga’s topping the list at the moment. I don’t think that they’ll be taking the results too seriously… [Time Magazine]

Reach Update: Armour Locks and Shield Pops

From Eyeball Pong to Influential Gamers Easter Weekend News Roundup 2010

Bungie’s dropped another marathon (no pun intended) Reach Update- and whilst Halo fans can merrily hit the link, I’ll do my best to quickly sum up the juiciest info.

Weapon and armour abilities are picked from a predetermined list that’s tailored by Bungie to match the level at hand- sorry folks, there’s no CoD-style custom loadouts. These new abilities include jetpacks, dodge rolls, super speed, armour lock (invulnerability) and invisibility; each of which has their own disadvantage as well as powerful strengths.

The new “popping” shield system will take some getting used to. It will be necessary to completely lower an opponent’s shield before dealing health damage as there’s no overlap between the last shield attack and the first unprotected hit. Whilst this is unlikely to affect your everyday life (and yes, I admit, it sounds fairly boring), this will certainly affect the face of Halo’s melee combat and its online multiplayer in general.

The new weapons are also looking highly sweet- frankly, I can’t wait to get my hands on them. The grenade launcher is looking especially tasty, with a remote detonator linked to how long you hold down the trigger. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle in the upcoming Beta. [Bungie]

Gamers Threaten to Sue Sony over 3.21

From Eyeball Pong to Influential Gamers Easter Weekend News Roundup 2010

Sony’s latest firmware update has been causing a massive publicity backlash, since it removes the PS3’s ability to support other operating systems (which was a unique selling point of the original fat models). This is fantastic news for gaming journalists everywhere, as it provides us with a juicy scandal that’s chock full of divisive content that’s bound to rake in the fanboy views.

Most gamers simply won’t be affected by 3.21, but the minority are making their voices heard. The interweb’s been rife with comments from both sides, and now the following message seems to be cropping up everywhere we look.

If you have been affected by Sony’s 3.21 update file a complaint to the BBB and the FTC and your corresponding Attorney General.

It is very easy and completely online forms. Just go to the respective websites

www. bbb .org / us / — click on file a complaint

www. ftccomplaintassistant .gov — click on complaint assistant

There’s possible grounds for a class action here- after all, many gamers have already installed operating systems for perfectly legal purposes. Check out both sides of the argument in our recent Game Buzz!

Every Friday we’ll be bringing you another slice of reaction to topical gaming news, and inviting you to agree, disagree, shout assent, vent rage, scream and complain to you heart’s delight. This week, we take a look at Sony’s recent firmware update, the controversial removal of the ‘OtherOS’ option and ask whether or not we should really care.

Several people I know thought it was an early April Fools joke – an update that removes features rather than adding them – but no, Sony has decided to crack down hard on people look to exploit cracks in its system. Although no-one from the big bad corporation has actually released a statement to the effect (all Sony said was that the update was due to ’security concerns’), or even acknowledged the young prodigy’s existence, I would assume that this crackdown is due in no small part to George Hotz’s (Geohot) successful attempt to finally hack the PS3 and gain access to the console’s hypervisor, giving him read/write access over the system memory and enabling full access to the meaty processing power that lies beneath the shiny obsidian plastic casing of the PS3. He completed his breakthrough in January at which point, considering that it had taken 3 years, 2 months and 11 days for someone to work out a way of hacking the console, a fair few media hubs began taking note.

Understandably, perhaps, considering that Geohot admitted that his hack could be exploited for piratical – no not the Johnny Depp/Geoffrey Rush kind – purposes, Sony were rather less than amused. Back in February a new patent from a Sony employee came to light that looked like  Geohot countermeasure:

“A method, system, and computer-usable medium are disclosed for controlling unauthorized access to encrypted application program code. Predetermined program code is encrypted with a first key. The hash value of an application verification certificate associated with a second key is calculated by performing a one-way hash function. Binding operations are then performed with the first key and the calculated hash value to generate a third key, which is a binding key. The binding key is encrypted with a fourth key to generate an encrypted binding key, which is then embedded in the application. The application is digitally signed with a fifth key to generate an encrypted and signed program code image. To decrypt the encrypted program code, the application verification key certificate is verified and in turn is used to verify the authenticity of the encrypted and signed program code image. The encrypted binding key is then decrypted with a sixth key to extract the binding key. The hash value of the application verification certificate associated with the second key is then calculated and used with the extracted binding key to extract the first key. The extracted first key is then used to decrypt the encrypted application code.” Read the full patent here.

The infamous Geohot

Needless to say, it didn’t really work.

Far better, therefore it would seem, to cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face, or throw the baby out with the bath water, or burn down the house when the…you get the idea. Sony have pulled the plug on OtherOS with a firmware update, clamping down on abusers and ruining the party for legitimate Linux users because of ’security concerns’. Displaying a masterclass of pitfall circumvention, Sony naturally made the firmware update optional, but put some rather nasty little caveats for unco-operative users:

“Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available:

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.”

So no games, movies or PSN for you and if you have been using OtherOS, legally or not, you’ll have to grab yourself an external hard-drive to back up all your stuff just in case. The modding community have, as one could have anticipated, turned round with tongue lashings of fire and brimstone, and not just for Sony. Geohot himself has come under serious fire too.

From Code Theft Arrest to a Hacker’s Promise – News Roundup 30th March 2010

Take Two Pays for Hot Coffee

From Code Theft Arrest to a Hackers Promise News Roundup 30th March 2010

I’m sure you’re aware of the controversial hidden sex minigame built into GTA: San Andreas, and I’m also sure that most of you couldn’t have cared less. Nevertheless, Take Two have finally issued monetary compensation to the blushing prudes that were offended by the inclusion of this shocking (ly tame) content.

According to the class action website, the offended gamers can receive the overwhelming sum of $5 to £35 depending on if they’ve still got the receipt and original disc. Which is just enough to buy your own hot coffee… or a cheap coffee machine if you’re lucky.

Legendary Hacker Vows to Save PS3 Linux Support

From Code Theft Arrest to a Hackers Promise News Roundup 30th March 2010

Remember Geohot? Legendary hacker George Hotz managed to successfully hack the PS3 a month ago, and Sony are planning to remove Linux support this Thursday as a protective measure against future incursions (regardless about how well-meaning they are). Most gamers won’t be affected by the move (and probably won’t even notice it), but it’s likely to raise the hackles of the homebrew community.

Possibly feeling guilty for the impending removal of the PS3’s ability to run other operating systems, Hotz has pleaded for gamers to resist updating the firmware until he’s developed a workaround.

“A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won’t. It’ll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn’t lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn’t about getting what you didn’t pay for, it’s about making sure you do get what you did.” – George Hotz

He raises a valid point. After all, he’s vowed to not enable piracy- rather, he’s a supporter of the modding and homebrew community and genuinely cracks consoles for the sake of it.

What’re y’all going to do? Update and play online, or hold off and save your Linux support? Do you think Hotz is a cyberspace Robin Hood or just another pirate? Let us know in the comments! [Geohot via Ubergizmo]

Breach Code Thief Arrested at PAX

From Code Theft Arrest to a Hackers Promise News Roundup 30th March 2010

The attempted theft of Breach game code from Atomic Games’ stall at the Penny Arcade eXpo has ended in an arrest. Apparently, the thief only wanted a copy of the game to play with his friends (rather than corporate espionage), but was subsequently apprehended by Atomic Games and PAX staff.

“This guy had only succeeded in copying about 14MB to his laptop before our staff caught him. Because of the work we do for military and intelligence organizations, we take security issues like this very seriously … It is fortunate for him that we caught him before any of this ended up on the internet. Many of the hackers who stole Valve’s Half-Life 2 code were tracked down by the FBI’s Cybercrime Task Force.” - Peter Tamte, Atomic Games President

Turns out that crime doesn’t pay… but I’m personally more interested in what Atomic Games do for the intelligence services. They spent three years working in top secrecy for the US government developing army training sims- but intelligence organisations? Intriguing. [Joystiq]

Game Buzz 5: Microsoft’s ApocalyPS3 Now

Game Buzz 5: Microsofts ApocalyPS3 Now

Game Buzz is a new weekly opinion column designed to take an irreverent look at one of the biggest news stories to break in the past week. Every Friday evening we’ll be bringing you another slice of reaction to topical gaming news, and inviting you to agree, disagree, shout assent, vent rage, scream and complain to you heart’s delight. This week we burst the bubble on Microsoft’s 2010.

I’m going to be honest, a small smile of smug satisfaction flickered upon my face for a split-second upon learning that all over the world the chunkier sons of Sony’s PS3 family were lying comatose, stricken down by a clock error the likes of which had not been seen since the turn of the millennium. You have to understand that as an Xbox 360 owner, my gaming life is one of nervous anticipation. I’m on my third model, having already lost two brave comrades to that most odious of illuminated symbols: The Red Ring of Death.

I cannot count the number of times I’ve stood, with tears streaming down my face, cradling the smouldering corpse of my machine, wrapped snugly in a towel, desperately hoping that by some miracle an excess of heat will ironically fix the damage that the very same thing cause in the first place. I recently watched Dealspwn’s very own Jon Lester beating the hell out of his disc drive for five minutes just to get a game to run…and the scary thing was that it worked.

But this has so often been the case: the Xbox 360 is a far more old-school piece of equipment than many realise. It passively advocates that most Victorian of ideals – corporal punishment, tending to respond more to the rod than to reason, much like old CRT televisions, the lovers of Dickensian villains and schoolchildren. It is something that I have long put down to Microsoft’s stubbornness, or rather lazy ineptitude. I almost admire Microsoft’s daring, after all you’ve got to have balls of steel to sell a product with a 60% fail rate and steadfastly refuse to sort it out properly.

Game Buzz 5: Microsofts ApocalyPS3 Now

But there have been two things in the news this week that have made me fear greatly for the longevity of the Xbox 360, and both of them have come from Sony. The first, of course, was the aforementioned little clock bug that had PS3 fanboys white-knuckled and hysterical for 24 hours. There was never any need for that kind of apoplectic madness, and I tears of mirth ran down my face when I saw forum posters comparing this minor software glitch to the Red Ring of Death. This is the one thing that Xbox owners can always be proud of…our console’s so much more f*cked than yours.

The second was the acquisition of Media Molecule. I am not worried too much about the hardware issue, Microsoft have repeatedly stated that they see the Xbox 360 as a long term console, and a potent argument was put forth in January of this year that this could feasibly be the case as, for the first time in gaming history, the firmware for consoles can be updated remotely, placing software far further forward in terms of generational longevity than hardware. And let’s be honest, it would not cost Microsoft anywhere near as much to simply iron out the faults in this console than it would to develop an entirely new hardware flagship. New consoles always run at a loss, which is then offset by continuing sales, software sales and third party licensing.

Game Buzz 5: Microsofts ApocalyPS3 Now

For some odd reason I just can't take Natal seriously...

However, that statement concerning hardware is, of course, something of a misnomer considering the large steps being taken towards motion control gaming, but even these are simply diversions and add-ons to prolong the lives of already existing machines. I disagree with Molyneux’s extravagant hype suggesting that Natal will change the face of gaming: I’d rather see Gears of War 3 if I’m honest, but you can bet that Natal and the PMC will alter the faces of gaming. Expect more family fun with plenty of shovelware pitched towards your little sister’s affection for My Little Pony. Back on topic, though, Microsoft didn’t seem to be particularly perturbed by Capcom’s complaints regarding the sequel to the painfully average Lost Planet, and they probably shouldn’t be because for better or for worse it is clear that Microsoft see their future as strongly digital, hence the  new 250 GB hard drive. True, Blu-ray would mean you’d be able to fit more onto a disc, but that would be a supreme admission of defeat from Microsoft. It is worth saying, though, that if Microsoft had fully backed HD-DVD from the start, this whole picture might have looked very different indeed.

But the relative lack of importance of the hardware means that in order to remain competitive, one thing is for certain: Microsoft desperately need to pull in the exclusives. Despite this being a battlefield that Microsoft have been fairly ruthless in over the last few years, I can’t help but feel that unless they start pulling their fingers out and investing in developer talent, they’re going to have a serious problem on their hands. Let’s have a look at some of Sony’s stable, for example: Polyphonic Digital, Team Ico, Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Insomniac, Zipper Interactive, Sucker Punch, Level 5, Kojima Productions, Santa Monica Studios,  Guerrilla Games, Incognito and now, of course, Media Molecule. To borrow a metaphor from Red Dwarf, I would smear my genitals in fish paste and dunk them into a school of hungry piranhas for a Team Ico game on the Xbox 360 (I’ll probably just go out and buy a PS3, but you get the idea), but there’s not really anyone, Bungie aside, who fills me with that sense of awe and expectation under Microsoft’s umbrella.

Game Buzz 5: Microsofts ApocalyPS3 Now

For God's sake Peter....stop ruining Fable and give us Black & White 3 instead!

In fact, let’s take a look at Microsoft’s list and compare the results: 343 Industries, Big Park, Firebird Studios, Spawnpoint Studios, Lionhead Studios, Rare Ltd., Turn-10, Wingnut are the entirety of Microsoft’s first-party studios. We can talk about Ruffian and Mistwalker and Remedy too, but that is still a woefully small pool of dedicated talent, at least third of whom haven’t made a single complete thing yet! Sony has Microsoft firmly pipped when it comes to critical acclaimed, big-name franchises too. We we’re psyched for Halo: Chronicles, but it never happened. Firebird and Spawnpoint are busy working away on an accessory that no-one has stopped to ask one particular question of just yet: what if Natal fails? And 343 Industries have basically just shown us that they can make cool anime featurettes. Yay. Imagines Heavy Rain on Natal, with you as a character. Sounds good? Who the hell would make it?!

Sony fanboys have long been uttering the words ‘This is the year of the PS3′, I should know, my housemate last year used to recite it in his sleep; but this time, they might have a point. Both consoles are capable of longevity, but only Sony seems to be doing the leg-work to ensure it. It seems to me that Microsoft are taking a lot for granted and pinning a whole heap of hopes on their motion control gimmick as Sony quietly amass some of the greatest developer talent of the last decade. Short-term contractual agreements are all well and good, but they don’t provide long-term security. If I was a leading exec at Microsoft, I’d be trying to cajole Infinity Ward into running come October, and snapping them up immediately.

We’ve seen the phrase ‘the ApocalPS3′ crop up a lot this week, but it shouldn’t have been directed at Sony. From the looks of things, Microsoft have far bigger issues to worry about. If all else fails, I can always turn my Xbox into one of these.

From PS3 Millennium Bug to BAFTA Bookies- News Roundup 1st March 2010

‘Millenium Bug’ Attacks Original PS3s

From PS3 Millennium Bug to BAFTA Bookies News Roundup 1st March 2010

Remember the Millennium bug? Millions of people across the globe were convinced that computers would cease to function in the year 2000 thanks to the clocks resetting to 1900- and thus causing planes to plummet out of the sky, reactors to melt down, nukes to rain down upon us and bring about total Armageddon. This didn’t happen, of course- until now. Ten years too late.

Original PS3s are now unable to connect to PSN, as their internal clocks reset to January 1st 2000. This not only renders the console offline, but also scuppers a number of time-sensitive trophies and stops trophy synchronised-titles from loading. DLC and installed games also fail to boot up. A rep from Sony Europe states:

“We have found out that some users are experiencing a network connection failure when signing on to PlayStation Network. We are currently looking into the issue to identify the cause of this network connection failure and will update further information as necessary (on the Blog or official website). We appreciate for your understanding and continued support.”

Slim models are not affected by the bug, but original PS3 owners should not connect to PSN until this outrageous problem is rectified.

Keep an eye on the official blog… and good luck.

NEWS UPDATE: Possible fix available in 24 hours. Don’t turn on your PS3 until then!

“We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.”- Official Statement from Sony

Activision Shut Down Legal Fan Sequel

From PS3 Millennium Bug to BAFTA Bookies News Roundup 1st March 2010

Five years ago, Vivendi granted an unprecedented ‘fan licence’ to a group of fanatic developers so that they could legally produce a sequel to the Kings Quest series. Entitled The Silver Lining, this project has taken over 8 years of grueling development- but will now never see the light of day. Activision acquired the rights to the Kings Quest series during its merger with Vivendi, and has now deemed the fan project unprofitable enough to revoke their fan license and force them to cease and desist… even though it has no plans to continue the series itself.

On the official site, the dev team thanks their fans and supporters for standing by them during their 8 years of fruitless blood, sweat and tears.

“Again, thank you all so much for everything. This has been a long and crazy road, full of more twists than we could’ve anticipated, but more triumphs and wonderful memories than we could’ve ever hoped for. And for that, to all of you and to everyone on our team, we will always be grateful. Thank You.”

That’s a class act through and through. We wish them the best of luck finding new projects and employment… yet another needlessly mercenary decision from Activision.

Uncharted 2 is Bookies’ Favourite for BAFTA Win

From PS3 Millennium Bug to BAFTA Bookies News Roundup 1st March 2010

Victor Chandler has announced that they’ve given Naughty Dog’s latest masterpiece 6/4 odds of winning Game of the Year at this years BAFTAs. Managing Director Peter Laverick explains:

“Uncharted 2 is a very strong favourite at 6/4 and we’ve already taken numerous four figure bets on it. For those looking for an outside bet we have seen support for FIFA 10 at 33/1. It’s always tricky offering odds on a public vote so we’ll be keeping a close eye on the money rolling in,”

Considering the coup at this year’s AIAS awards, Uncharted 2 would be our favourite to win Game of the Year as well. Disagree? Have your say in the comments! [Gameindustry.biz]

White Knight Chronicles (PS3 Review)

White Knight Chronicles (PS3 Review)

Dealspwn Rating: 7/10

Platform: PS3

Developer: Level 5

Publisher: SCEE

I don’t want to say JRPGs are like buses but come on! In little over a month, starved console gamers are getting Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Final Fantasy XIII (9th March) and now the very late in translation PS3 exclusive, White Knight Chronicles. The Wii even got a Final Fantasy game too!

Well, enough complaining – just book the whole of March off and get stuck-in! RPG fans may be interested to know that this game is from Level 5, the well respected developers of the critically acclaimed Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy.

The story is a typical save-the-Princess/revenge saga. The only defence I can think of for such simple storylines in many RPGs is that anything too complicated would be hard work to write, bearing in mind the many hours between story scenes we spend levelling-up grinding and exploring – FFX-2 being a prime example of ‘what the hell was all that about.’ Even so, we’re not seven years old! White Knight Chronicles is clichéd up to the nines, but still managed to suck me right in – eager as I was for a solid RPG and enjoying the momentum of the story and the characters anyway.

Blue Toad Murder Files Episode 3 FREE @ PSN [PS3 Games]

Blue Toad Murder Files Episode 3 FREE @ PSN [PS3 Games]

If you enjoyed the first two episodes of this family-orientated mystery and puzzle game but felt a little narked at stumping up a tenner for around three hours of gaming, then you’ll be delighted to hear that you can now get the third episode of the Blue Toad Murder Files for FREE for a month on the PSN Store. Let’s hope they let you sort out the mess from the end of Episode 1 that was somewhat swept under the rug for Episode 2!

You will need to have at least the first episode to get this for free. You can buy that for £6.29 or get a discount by getting the second episode too in a £9.99 bundle.

For newcomers, the game has you wondering around the “quintessentially quaint” countryside village of Little Riddle, solving puzzles to find the culprit of that episodes big mystery. The village looks like a shiny, high-def version of Postman Pat’s world. It’s all vibrant colours, babbling brooks, duck ponds, country manors, twee shops and a small train station.

Puzzles involve anagrams, word searches and maths (boo the maths!). Or they might involve rearranging pipes or maze pieces. You’ll also need to keep a keen eye (and ear) on random details that you’ll be quizzed on too. By the end of each episode you’re asked to collect your evidence together and pick your culprit from a line-up.

I found the first two games to be enjoyable first time around. However they suffered with a lack of replay value with no variation to the puzzle questions or answers second time around which at least made it way easier to get a gold rating! A word of warning though, Episode 2 is considerably tougher.

The bright graphics, well animated characters, brilliantly cheesy acting and script made it a worthy experience though. All the voices were done by one man, which once your hear them all is quite a feat.

This offer expires March 25th 2010. If you do enjoy yourself in Little Riddle you can look forward to Episodes 4-6 on April 8th 2010.

The 3D Experience

WARNING: ENTIRE REVIEW IN 3D

The 3D Experience

I’ve always been a fan of 3D anything. Well, the idea of 3D anything. In reality it’s never quite worked out very well, has it? You’ve either spent a good proportion of the time leaning from side to side in order to keep everything in focus, or nursing a whopper of a headache. A 3D hangover without the fun bit first.

In spite of many setbacks, including dodgy Channel 4 westerns and B movies, 3D seems to be the buzzword of 2010. Ever since the tail end of 2009, products boasting 3D capabilities have been shuffling nervously onto the market.

The 3D ExperienceAsus launched the G51J 3D notebook in January of this year with Nvidia’s latest 3D technology built in. It comes with a set of wireless 3D vision active-shutter glasses and promises to whisk games into the third dimension.  Acer climbed into the ring first with the Aspire 5738DG (who comes up with these names?) but it didn’t quite have the power that Asus shoved into their machine.

Still, although 3D gaming looks set to become the killer app of the Teens, the technology surrounding it is at about the same stage of development. Like spots on teeny skin, flaws crop up. You have to remain pretty steady or you lose colours and the axis, and this can lead to some rather nasty side-effects, like brain crushing headaches or irritation. And it is sometimes flawed. You can’t get away with just having 3D because it’s pretty, it has to truly deliver.

Still, these are a small price to pay for the uber coolness of the 3D game. Immersing yourself in World of Warcraft is relentlessly powerful. Dragons and fists and weapons blasting out of the screen. Whenever I’ve done a review on one of these I’ve almost always found myself leaning back (or jumping a little and squeaking) as arms of doom reach out of the screen. It’s the best mind game ever.

The 3D ExperienceCertainly the market is frothing at the mouth. Shortly after Asus plonked their netbook onto the market, the news began to shake with 3D this and 3D that. Movies like Avatar and Alice are shaking the cinematic floorboards while Philips, Sony, MSI and Nokia throw 3D development announcements about like confetti.
