Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition | £12.85 | Zavvi & The Hut | Xbox 360

Playing through with a friend in co-op mode on Resident Evil 5 can be pretty good fun, but if you're playing through it by yourself you'll have to put up with the atrocious AI taking control of your companion, so you can expect to be shot in the head whilst your first aid sprays are used up at a remarkable rate. This instalment of the series only really has a few scares up its sleeve, which is a shame because you're never really on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to jump out at you next. The Gold Edition of the game comes with the versus mode, the Lost In Nightmares and Desperate Escape add-on packs, as well as two costume packs. You can grab the Xbox 360 version over at Zavvi, or The Hut, for £12.85, which is just over £2 cheaper than the next best offer.

Amazon have price-matched Play for this title, putting both their prices in the sub-£15 area and managing to save you just over £3 in the process. The latest instalment in the Resident Evil franchise was met with mixed responses, mainly due to how people perceived the control system (and the Move controls aren’t the mapped out in the best locations) but those who gave it a go quickly found out that the survival horror was indeed there and the game had some surprising reply value. With all the additional DLC available bundled in with the Gold Edition as well this makes it a complete experience for fans of the long running series. Thanks to missgem @ HUKD!

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition (Move Compatible) | £12.99 | Amazon Jersey & Play.com | PS3

Resident Evil 5 was a worthy and interesting new take on the survival horror genre that was big on survival but fairly light on the… you know… horror. If you missed The Hut’s voucher code deal last month, this is currently the cheapest price around for the Move-enabled PS3 version that works surprisingly well. It’s not quite Res Evil 4, mind. Want to experience a tense adventure with slick motion controls? Take your pick out of these two retailers. Note that HMV are retailing at a slightly higher price, but they can't deliver for at least a fortnight.

Simply enter the code BESTTEN at checkout, and marvel at how The Hut's price for Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition drops to a mere £10.65. The latest expansion to RE5 bundles all the DLC and costume packs, like Lost In Nightmares and the return of Mercenaries Mode, not to mention support for Sony's Playstation Move controller. Personally, I was very disappointed with Resident Evil 5, mostly due to the sluggish, last-gen controls. However, it's a staggeringly beautiful game, and I'm a sucker for twisted creatures and zombies, which Resident Evil 5 delivers with mutated aplomb.

Seeing as Halloween's on the horizon, now seems as good a time as any to pick up a copy of Resident Evil 5 if you've not done so already (remember to use the voucher code to get the game at the advertised price). Whilst some people were disappointed with this instalment of the series, I quite enjoyed it, although that might have had something to do with the fact that I was playing it co-op with a friend rather than allowing the awful AI to aid me in the missions. The gold edition also comes equipped with all the game's DLC, as well as a versus mode for a bit of multiplayer mayhem. Thanks to whizzkid @ HUKD.

If you missed Resident Evil 5 and since regretted this decision, then RE5 Gold Edition is just for you. Not only does it include all the DLC for RE5, but the PS3 version is compatible with Playstation Move, Sony's new Wiimote... I mean, motion-controller. It's a mammoth game, the RE5 campaign alone a chunky wad of zombie-infused action, but with Lost in Nightmares, Desperate Escape and the popular Versus Mode included, too, it's a cracking deal for just under thirteen quid. I wasn't the biggest fan of Resident Evil 5, especially considering how special its predecessor was. But it's a beautiful game, the African landscape and locales rendered in exquisite detail, and despite the tank-like controls, the gunplay is visceral and rewarding. It can't truly be considered a survival-horror game, however, but more of a survival-action-shooter. SAS?

Once again Chris Redfield finds himself facing yet another set of mutated humans and other assorted creatures, who want to rip him limb from limb. However, in this instalment of the series he's aided, or hindered, by his partner Sheva depending on whether or not you're playing co-op with a competent friend or going solo and allowing the computer's AI to make some very poor decisions when it comes to Sheva's actions. I really enjoyed Resident Evil 5 and particularly liked how it tried to link up Resi Evil 4's story line with the other games, plus it's always nice to see the return of some classic characters from a series. Having said that though, it's not the best the Resi Evil series has to offer, but if you're a fan you probably won't be disappointed. Thanks to JMH87 @ HUKD

An ideal purchase for first time buyers of Resident Evil 5 as it includes the DLC for both console versions and PlayStation Move support for the PS3. The standard edition of the game won’t support the Move and a patch is unfortunately unlikely at this time.

The next best prices are £16.85 on the PS3 at SimplyGames and £14.85 at ShopTo.

Resident Evil 5 takes the action to the cradle of civilisation, Africa. Chris Redfield returns from his long hiatus (possibly spent injecting heinous amounts of steroids into his arms), to take on the new strain of Umbrella’s biological virus. The action starts off in dusty slum villages and shanty towns with large numbers of zombies attacking at once. Eventually though the action starts to become a bit of a slog through the more mundane locations of underground bases and docks. The swamp missions are pretty cool though.

It’s no Resident Evil 4, but the graphics, especially in the cutscenes, are excellent. If there’s one thing Capcom can be relied upon (apart from rinsing you for DLC immediately after launch), it’s to produce some great action cutscenes. It’s a shame the action you get to control is really beginning to show its age as you still can’t move and shoot at the same time, which accounts for 90% of all deaths in the game. Online co-op is a welcome addition though and is much better than letting Shiva (your new partner) loose with an AI leash as you’ll spend the whole game shooting each other in the shoulder.

PS3 gamers might find the game suits the new PlayStation Move motion controller, but we’ll have to wait and see how good a fit it will be. We’re presuming the game will also require a navigation controller, unless it’s going to be adapted into an on-rails shooter.

The inclusion of the barmy-priced DLC is a good bonus for everyone though. ‘Lost in Nightmares’ explores the earlier events where Chris lost his partner, Jill Valentine, at Spencer’s Mansion. The second extra mission is ‘Desperate Escape’ which features Jill again, but I’ll leave it at that so as not to ruin the main game for any new players. Both of these chapters will also unlock characters for the Mercenaries mode.

The Versus Mode DLC is for online battles such as Slayers where you compete for points by taking down waves of Majini (Resi 5’s zombies). Or there’s Survivors, which has players taking each other on instead. The package is rounded off with two extra costume packs.

The new single-player chapters are the biggest draw to Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, especially to any fan wanting a more complete picture of the story. At £9.99 it’s pretty tempting to check it out for the move compatibility too if you’re going to get that in September.

Thanks to nicmall at HotUkDeals for the find.

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, the Playstation Move-compatible version of Capcom's premiere title, is due for release on September 17th, and you can nab it off Zavvi for just £12.99, with free delivery for release date!

RE5 was a rather successful game, selling millions and copies but, in the run-up to its release, garnering a rather bad amount of press. It's old news and something I won't bore you with now, but RE5's racial sensibilities were questioned. If you're not bothered by this, then RE5's blend of horror-infused, co-operative zombie-slaying may be just the ticket, if you can stomach the stubbornly old-school controls and fairly awful dialogue.

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition bolsters the original release with PS Move compatibility. The Playstation Move is Sony's answer to the Wiimote, a wand-like, motion-sensing controller, which, in RE5: Gold Edition's case, can be used like a gun, directing the Move remote at the screen and blasting away at the hordes of infected locales, swamp-lurking crocodiles and inexplicable scorpion-bat-thing.

I was very excited when RE5 came out, as I'm an old fan of the series and was looking forward to how Capcom would build on the genre-defining RE4 for the next generation of consoles. How disappointing it was when I discovered not only had Capcom failed to push forward with this terrific foundation, but that they'd essentially copied it, animation for animation, and ported it to the PS3, albeit with a shiny new coat of paint. If anything, RE5 is inferior to RE4, with less space to explore, less atmosphere to the locales, and a general sense of deja-vu pervading everything from the controls to the boss fights. I hope PS Move-compatibility injects some much-needed excitement into the game, as its sorely lacking in ambition.
