Skullgirls Review

This is a bit of a bargain for fighting game fans, providing one of the most balanced and attractive brawlers of recent years at a nice cheap price. Skullgirls was designed by some of the legends of the genre (and the FGC) to be a superb competitive playing field, and succeeds absolutely.

Lab Zero Games: Reverge Layoffs Weren't "Malicious Or Acrimonious"

Yesterday, we learned that the development team behind phenomenal competition fighting game Skullgirls had been laid off from Reverge Labs back in June, and have now formed their own studio after a few months of unemployment. Lab Zero Games have told us that the split was neither "malicious or acrimonious," and that it was probably originally supposed to be a temporary cost-cutting measure.

Skullgirls Pre-Order | £9.59 With Voucher Code | Gamefly | PC

Skullgirls really is extraordinary: a fighting game made by some of the best fighting game designers and players in the world to be the ultimate competition game. Amazingly, they succeeded. Perfectly-balanced characters and a deep, responsive combo system (not to mention anti-infinite detection) makes this a perfectly level playing field - and a must-play for hardcore fighting game fans. More casual players, however, may be put off by a dearth of meaningful content.

The PC version will contain new features and tweaks when it releases this October, and Gamefly will save you a couple of quid with voucher code GFUKAUG2012.

Skullgirls Review | Intimidatingly Sexy

Platforms: PSN | XBLA (reviewed)

Developer: Reverge Labs

Publisher: Konami

Skullgirls is one of the most exciting games I've reviewed in some time. Not only has Reverge Labs, a plucky yet small outfit of elite designers, players and fans, entered an arena dominated by AAA franchises, but they promised to beat the big boys at their own game. Skullgirls planned to deliver the most balanced competition fighting game ever, and set a new standard for the FGC by fixing the myriad problems present in the genre. All while delivering a sensational hand-drawn visual treat and some jaw-droppingly (cynically?) sexy protagonistes. It's aimed squarely at the hardcore, and makes no bones about it.

Before we begin, it's important to bear in mind that us reviewers often don't have the time to practice and specialise at a single game, and the days of absorbing every command, character and nuance of MvC2, Street Fighter and Soul Calibur over several months are long gone. For the sake of full disclosure, I fully admit that I'll never be good enough to compete with the online community - the spirit is willing, yet the thumbs are slightly too slow even after many hours of practice.

But damn, I still know a sweet fighting game when I play one. And Skullgirls is oh so very sweet.

Ninja Nurse Valentine Revealed For Skullgirls

Two Characters Confirmed For DLC

Skullgirls, the ultimate competition fighting game from Reverge Labs, will feature a small range of perfectly balanced, bizarre and somewhat attractive characters when it launches early next year. Skullgirls Trailer Is Educational, Also Sexy

Skullgirls, the insanely deep competition fighter from Reverge Labs, has had its innovative new features stripped bare in an excellent new trailer. Within, you can see the incredibly seductive anti-infinite combo system that allows players to break out of otherwise infinite loops. You'll witness the sultry high/low blocking that makes the horrors of cheeky unblockable attacks a thing of the past. You'll drool all over the custom tag team mechanics that allow you to enter battle with either a varied team or single powerful fighter... without losing balance! Yes, Skullgirls is shaping up to fix everything that's wrong with the genre.

Oh, and there are also some animated girls. But with fighting mechanics this brilliant, you probably won't notice. Be sure to check out our hands-on preview as well as the new vid!

Skullgirls Hands-On Preview | The Best Competition Fighter... Ever?

Reverge Labs plan to make Skullgirls the best competition fighting game on the market.

This might sound like a remarkable - even ridiculous - statement... but what's more remarkable is that they're actually on course to succeed in spectacular style. This humble download title is set to pack more nuance, better balance, more nuance and more fun into its eight characters than any number of monolithic full-price Japanese juggernauts. Our extensive hands-on test was barely enough to scratch the surface, yet we came away knowing that Konami has discovered a major game-changer that caters for the most hardcore players and genre-fearing newcomers alike.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 provides the inspiration behind Skullgirls' basic premise, but not in the way you might expect. Reverge Labs love Capcom's classic fighting franchise - and at the same time, feel that it's broken at a very basic level. Competition players only tend to favour a handful of fighters out of the enormous roster (Magneto and Tron Bonne especially), highlighting what is essentially an unbalanced and unfair system. Not only that, but "infinites" cause newbies no end of grief as advanced players exploit unbreakable combos to facilitate cheap victories.

This will not stand. Skullgirls is here... and it's going to fix everything.
