Black Friday 2015 Survival Guide | How to navigate this year’s retail madness

Although there have been some pretty tasty deals already, tomorrow marks this year’s Black Friday, with Cyber Monday following soon after. Some of you may have already begun your Christmas shopping, but Black Friday usually signals the moment when retailers really start pushing their best deals. It can often be a lot to take in, but we’ve set up this guide to help you navigate the internet during this time of flash deals and (hopefully) ridiculous bargains.

Black Friday 2015 Survival Guide | How to navigate this year’s retail madness

Black Friday: The Lowdown

Its prominence in the UK rose last year thanks to main high street retailers finally getting involved (and the ludicrous stampedes that occurred) but in case you have yet to learn what Black Friday is we’ve got the lowdown for you below:

What is Black Friday? Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving (yes, blame the US), and has therefore been a time when many consumers have had the day off and used the freedom to do a spot of Christmas shopping. As a result, many stores began gearing their key sales towards this date, and it's swelled into global retail phenomenon.

Why Black Friday? Perhaps it's because profits start swinging back into the black again around this time of year. Perhaps it's because of the horrors that customer-facing staff see every year as the stampeding hordes approach their doors. Wikipedia posits that the terms originated in Philadelphia, where it was "used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving".

No surprises in UK Charts, FIFA 14 still top dog

UK Games Charts | 28th September 2013

As much as we enjoy causing havoc in expansive crime sandboxes, us Brits do love our footy, as evidenced by FIFA 14 knocking Grand Theft Auto V off its pedestal this week. Though sales are down compared to last year's iteration, perhaps due to the next-gen transition, free Xbox One promotion and, erm, that Rockstar game, it's still selling strong and outpacing its markedly improved rival PES 2014.

GTA V sales have dropped 82% since last week, which may well be refreshed once Grand Theft Auto Online releases this week. In other news, Ubisoft are laughing with a couple of games in the top ten, while Disney Infinity, Minecraft, The Last Of Us and Diablo III continue to chart well.

It's all change at the top this week. After reigning for a month, Saints Row IV is down to fourth as GTA V and PES 2013 swoop into town. Elsewhere, The Last of Us climbs twenty-two places up into third, and Aliens: Colonial Marines reaches an astonishing ninth place after languishing outside of the top forty for weeks.

Saints Row IV maintained it's position at the top of the charts, but there were also no fewer than four new entries in the top ten this week. The Creative Assembly stormed into second place with Total War: Rome II, hotly followed by Diablo III, given a boost by its console release. The Vita got some sales loving thanks to Killzone: Mercenary and would you believe it, Farming Simulator 2013 has made the top ten in the console version's first week on sale here in the UK.

Nintendo, that company we've been ragging on for months, have three games in the top five this week a Pikmin 3 comes roaring into second place for the Wii U as Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition moves into first. Elsewhere, Naughty Dog's PS3 swansong, The Last of Us, relinquishes its summer stranglehold on the top spot and drops to third, the retail release of New Super Luigi U musters an appearance at #13 on the board, and LEGO Batman 2 sneaks back into the top ten.

All change at the top please! Yes, that's right, there's a new sheriff in town. Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has stormed away to becoming the third-best-selling game of 2013 thus far, taking the top spot in the UK charts this week. Animal Crossing: New Leaf comes it second, once again displaying just how much of a powerhoue console the 3DS has become. Seriously, buy one immediately.

Remember Me falls 17 places to #20;  Injustice bounces back into the top ten, riding the wave of DLC; and for some inexplicable reason Warfighter creep back into the top 40.

UK Games Charts | 11th May 2013

Dead Island: Riptide is one again sitting pretty at the top of the pile this week, making it the third week at #1 for thezobie-baiting sequel. The complete retail release of Telltale's The Walking Dead debuts at #9, and although it's a must-play experience, Brendan has been reporting that Telltale appear to have spent the time between digital and retail releases doing sweet F-A, as the game is riddled with all of the bugs that the individual episodic releases enjoyed.

That's not how you do it.

Elsewhere, Black Ops II sneaks back into the top 3, and Persona 4 Arena debuts at #11.

Dead Island: Riptide has survived to take the top spot in the UK charts once again this week, with a number of the fresh releases from the past few weeks holding strong in the top ten. It's good to see two 3DS titles standing firm, and Injustice holds on to the #2 spot, with Tomb Raider rising two places to complete the top three.

Elsewhere, as the Playoffs begin across the pond, it gives me a great deal of personal stisfaction to see NBA 2K13 sneak back into the top 40. Because it's awesome.

UK Games Charts | 20th April 2013

A new challenger approaches! Netherrealm's Injustice has smacked Bioshock Infinite from the top spot this week, with Fire Emblem: Awakening making its debut at #3. We're overjoyed by this news, not least because the SRPG from Nintendo has reviewed spectacularly.

Keep an eye out for our Injustice review later today. The game is enormously fun.

Elsewhere there are familiar faces, and it's good to see Luigi hanging around in the top ten. Seriously, if you haven't bought a 3DS yet, there's never been a better time.

Platinum's Minami Details Sales Struggles

Our love for Platinum Games is well-documented, and indeed studio head Tatsuya Minami is very satisfied with the games that his developers have been crafting over the past few years.

But he's not so happy about how well they're selling.

UK Games Charts | 30th March 2013

There are some new faces in the charts this week. Irrational's opus, Bioshock Infinite, makes it up all of the way to the top spot. Pleasingly, the excellent Tomb Raider holds its position in second, with Gears of War: Judgment falling to third. Army of Two inexplicably enters the charts at #6, but at least it's beaten by a single-platform title with enough charm and warmth to banish all thoughts of Alpha and Bravo's awful adventure.

Cheers Luigi, you utter legend.
