Landmark Beta Gameplay - Staking your claim | Dealspwn Playthrough

At the beginning of the year we looked at the Alpha build for what was then called Everquest Next: Landmark - the sandbox experience from Sony Online Entertainment. Despite the fact it was incredibly rough around the edges in terms of user friendliness, we came away impressed by the scope of what could be achieved with heavily-modified Forgelight game engine. The community were building highly impressive constructions even back then, and it gave us a great idea of what we could expect from Everquest Next proper in the future.

Since then, the game has reached the beta stage having been continually patched, with new features and materials added to expand both the scope of creation possibilities and the scope of the progression. So, in today's episode of Dealspwn Playthrough, Carl provides commentary for this return to the renamed Landmark, with SOE dropping the Everquest Next label as players have been creating things that go beyond the franchise.

In this video, Carl demonstrates how to get a claim of your own, and shows just how powerful the voxel-based creation toolkit can be. We also get to see the template system, and how easy it is to use.

We will be back with more from Landmark in the near future. Access to the beta is available via an Early Access purchase, but it will be Free To Play when it eventually launches.

With the recent update to PlanetSide 2 finally delivering the long-awaited new continent of Hossin, the Dealspwn team jumped in-game to see if it had been worth the wait earlier this week. Having splashed around in the foggy swamps and fought amongst the trees, Carl and Jon sat down to reflect on the newest area for Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play online shooter.

Topics include the duo's first impressions, what they liked most about the swampy environment, the new features such as the Continent-Lock system, and what they hope to see added in the future.

Will you survive? Such is the question posed by H1Z1, Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming F2P survival sandbox. We'll scavenge for supplies and crafting materials, desperately engage the 'infected' hordes and occasionally secure a vehicle for some post-apocalyptic green laning; all of which features in the brand new slice of gameplay footage.

SOE boss John Smedley has also assured us that snowy environments and dynamic weather are headed to H1Z1 and Planetside 2. It's looking cool, snow joke [you're fired - Ed]

Clearly already looking solid ahead of its Steam Early Access launch, H1Z1 has been picking up a publicity snowball over the last few months, especially since it's also slated to release on PS4 in due time. Let us know what you make of it!

Game Buzz | Episode 71 - Rumble in the Crumble

This week on Game Buzz... We take a look at SOE's zombie survival game H1Z1, we chat about the recent Nintendo Direct and the upcoming Smash Bros. games for 3DS and Wii U, we have a bit of a natter about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and The Last of Us coming to PS4, and we get a bit flustered over custard.

I can't explain, it makes more sense when you hear it.

Game Buzz | Episode 71 - Rumble in the Crumble. Recorded 11th April, 2014.

Parental Advisory: We've tried to keep it as conversational and informal as possible, and you should be warned that there may be some instances of strong language.

H1Z1: SOE's Smedley allays fears about pay-to-win, discusses monetisation and DayZ

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has outlined in greater detail the approach to monetisation that the company will be taking with upcoming free-to-play zombie survival title H1Z1.

As we reported yesterday, the game will be free when it launches, although players will be able to get stuck into Early Access for $19.99. But the announcement whipped up a little bit of confusion and anxiety, as do most ambitious F2P titles when they're announced, and familiar questions began to pop up: will it be pay to win? What sort of things can your money buy in-game? How will the game be balanced to ensure a good experience for those who don't want to drop a penny while still managing to make some money?

"You will be surprised to hear we have intentionally left the decisions about what to monetize until we can hear from you," wrote Smedley in a second Reddit update. "This isn't some contrived thing. I'm being serious. It is a nearly blank slate."

SOE are seeking feedback, then, from the community on how to best proceed on this front, but Smedley did lead off with five pointers that'll underpin the basic monetisation mechanisms of H1Z1.

If DayZ and PlanetSide a baby - SOE unveil new F2P survival sandbox H1Z1

It wasn't too long ago that SOE president John Smedley was teasing an upcoming reveal for a previously unannounced title, and last night the veil was well and truly lifted. It's called H1Z1, and it's a survival horror sandbox title that will utilize the Forgelight engine - the same engine used to power PlanetSide 2 - with some tweaks brought over from Landmark to provide players with the tools to build safehouses and fortresses.

So in short it's DayZ + Rust x PlanetSide 2. But there's going to be more to it than that, if the initial reports are correct, although we do know for certain that the entire game will be Free 2 Play. We've got the initial video reveal for you to watch above, but we've gathered up all the interesting bits of info for you to look over after the jump.

EverQuest Next Landmark Alpha Gameplay - Getting Started | Dealspwn Playthrough

Taking a break from our endless WildStar coverage, Carl decided to take a look at the recently released Alpha build for Sony Online Entertainment's creative sandbox MMO EverQuest Next Landmark. So, in today's episode of Dealspwn Playthrough, Carl provides commentary as he explains what the game is all about, provides a quick guide on how to get started, and takes a look at some of the constructive (and destructive) elements that are on offer.

He also tries to create some sort of new sport involving surfing down hills. See if it could become a "thing" by hitting the jump.

Game Night | The Pilot Part 1 - PlanetSide 2
We promised more video content this year, and so we're testing out a new venture we call Game Night - where the team here at the Dealspwn Citadel get together once a week to play a game, and then we show you the results. It could be anything - a current blockbuster title, a horrendously broken mess, an indie darling, or perhaps a fan favourite from yesteryear. To see how it all faired as an idea, we decided to take our pilot episode onto Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play MMOFPS extravaganza PlanetSide 2, fighting for the glory of the Terran Republic. There was death, slip-sliding tanks, much smoke, more death, the world's worst Marauder run, and even more death. See it all after the jump.

"I have no idea what's going on" | Misadventures in PlanetSide 2

Even thought we've regularly admitted here on Dealspwn that we love PlanetSide 2's ridiculous global warfare, Carl has taken a break in recent months due to a lack of time. Well, thanks to a lot of insistence from Jon, he finally decided to get back into the fight during last week's Friday Night Ops, but what happened when a recall order was issued to rally at the warpgate was... not what they were expecting. It has to be seen to be believed, and you can do so by hitting the jump.

Planetside 2 Is Not PS4's "Massively Multiplayer Halo." It Deserves Better, Sony

It was all going so well. Following last year's launch, Planetside 2 has evolved into probably the best free-to-play shooter on the market, offering truly enormous battles and a staggeringly generous economy. Sony Online Entertainment have been scurrying around to optimise the MMOFPS to run on a wider variety of PC specifications while tweaking mechanics and the metagame. A new patch is ready to download, a new continent is in the offing, a PS4 version is slated for next year and the future is bright.

And then SOE president John Smedley went and spoiled it all by saying something stupid like, "we believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4."

Everquest Next Dev Diary Goes Behind The Scenes

Sony Online Entertainment are, ever so gradually, letting the cat out of the bag for Everquest Next, one informative furball at a time. This week they released a developer diary taking a look behind the scenes, and also giving players a glimpse of Everquest Next: Landmark -- the tools-stuffed precursor to the new MMORPG that will allow players to build worlds and assets for Everquest Next.

Everquest Next Debut Roundup

Could The Granddaddy Of the MMO Reinvent The Genre A Second Time?

After months of waiting, chinese whispers, and downright teasing, Sony Online Entertainment finally revealed what they had up their sleaves with Everquest Next last night, and while there are still a lot of unanswered question what SOE did show was definitely something worthy of the hype they have built up over the last several months. During the keynote at SOE Live in Las Vegas, the development team took to the stage and showed how exactly they plan on making EQN the next step in the evolution of the MMO genre. We’ve got the details, including the keynote itself, for your perusal after the jump.

Be seated comfortably though, because this one, as they say, is a doosy.

Planetside 2 Getting Retail Edition

Bear with me, because I'm not entirely sure how to explain this. Here goes: Planetside 2, the superb free-to-play MMOFPS that's currently one of the most intense shooters out there, will soon be available to buy in shops. Even though it's freely downloadable, for nothing, and you'll need to have a decent internet connection to play it.

At least you'll get a few bonuses, one of which might actually make it worth buying for existing players.

Nostalgia Reigns As Everquest Next Website Opens

SOE Employees Regale Virtual Tales Of Yore

We won’t be getting any actual information until SOE Live in August, but Sony Online Entertainment have opened up a new website dedicated to the upcoming sequel to the original MMORPG success story – Everquest. The website contains five videos that tell a different story relating to Everquest and Everquest 2, from dressing up in costumes for a wedding, to helpful parenting tips, and winning a car. You can check them out by heading over to the Everquest Next website here.

Details are rather light on the ground at the moment, but we do know that Everquest Next will use the Forgelight engine that is currently used for Planetside 2 (which means huge open areas of land and thousands of players online at once are possible) and SOE studio head John Smedley has hinted heavily at the idea that it will be a huge sandbox game, distancing itself from the theme park experience that was Everquest 2. We’ll keep you posted on any new information as it emerges.

GU08 Now Out For PlanetSide 2

Harasser Buggy Now In-game

In what is being touted as their “biggest Game Update yet,” Sony Online Entertainment have released GU 08 for their free-to-play MMOFPS PlanetSide 2. Along with the usual bundle of game fixes and balance checks, the update brings a bunch of new additions to the online action, including the Harasser Buggy. Capable of carrying three players (including a MAX unit in the rumble seat) we suspect some rather interesting combinations will be enterting the battlefield from today. You can see the new vehicle in action by checking out the video below, before getting some additional details about the GU after the jump.
