Avernum 2: Crystal Souls Review | The Fantastic Formula

Okay. You got me. My Spiderweb Software RPG reviews are getting pretty formulaic. I typically kick things off by bemoaning the state of gaming these days, then wax lyrical about the Infinity Engine and the importance of writing over visuals. Thankfully Jeff Vogel is still around, though, creating enormous and engaging RPGs with rich fundamentals and masterful command of the written word. Which I praise highly and breathlessly, pausing briefly to criticise the terrible interface before slapping on a ripe old score and an editor's choice award.

In my defence, however, my reviews are so formulaic because Spiderweb Software follows a winning formula of their own, down to the same basic systems and iterative engine that remain largely unchanged after two decades. As an expanded remake of a remake (Avernum 2 originally released in 2001, which was itself a remake of Exile 2!), you might expect Avernum 2: Crystal Souls to be old rope that's fraying around the edges somewhat.

Avernum 2: Crystal Souls Review | The Fantastic Formula

So I'm delighted to report that Avernum 2: Crystal Souls manages to feel fresh and unique despite its pedigree, thanks to the timeless quality of Vogel's writing and its impressively unique campaign structure. If you have 40-odd hours to spare and don't mind reading a novel's worth of text, this is a old-school trip worth taking. It's certainly the gaming highlight of my year thus far.

We return to Avernum, a sprawling subterranean world in which generations of exiled prisoners have started new lives and scratched together a brave new civilization against the horrors of the dark. Unfortunately the surface world has launched a crushing offensive against its former outcasts, scattering and crushing the beleagured yet determined rebels. It's a unique and complex setting that feels alive and authentic, underpinned by powerful themes of poverty, desperation, rebellion and racism, but what's remarkable is that the world and its inhabitants are brought to life though the writing, not the graphics.

If you love classic RPGs and pine for the Infinity Engine days, you're going to love Avernum 2: Crystal Souls. Spiderweb Software's Jeff Vogel has been crafting quality role-playing experiences for the best part of two decades, delivering enormous worlds and compelling characters fleshed out with exceptional writing and tactical combat. Basically, they're excellent.

This massively expanded remake of Avernum 2 is set to continue that trend as you create a party and set out into a massive underground world, exploring over 100 towns and dungeons and defending your new home over the course of 40-50 hours. It released this week on Steam for £12.74, and there's a huge demo too.

We're currently working on our full review -- there's dozens of hours of gameplay here, so cut us some slack! -- but Spiderweb Software have given us three extra Steam codes for you to win.

Avadon 2: The Corruption Review | Old-School RPG Fans Will 'Avablast

Platforms: PC

Developer: Spiderweb Software

A new Spiderweb Software RPG is like my birthday, Christmas and unexpected tax rebate all rolled into one. While my American peers continually bicker about console resolutions and upload pictures of their brand new PS4s to Instagram, you'll find me playing a game that creates an entire world and believable characters using little more than the written word and a pocketful of sprites. Avadon 2 may look like it's stuck in 1998, but it channels the classic Infinity Engine and Gold Box games of old, another one-man tour de force from the indomitable Jeff Vogel.

Like Avernum and Geneforge before it, Avadon 2 requires its players to just add imagination, using a peerless command of the English language and rock-solid RPG systems to keep us hooked to the screen over the course of fifty-plus hours. Sorry it took so long.

Avadon 2: The Corruption Review | Old-School RPG Fans Will 'Avablast

Avadon 2 leads on from the events of its predecessor, though previous experience isn't essential. We're re-introduced to a fantasy world on the brink of destruction, both from a force of monolithic evil and squabbling factions vying for control under the guise of a grudging alliance. The formidable black fortress of Avadon used to keep the treacherous factions in line with an iron fist and its elite armies, but a recent attack leaves it uniquely vulnerable. Into this fragile situation steps you, the player, a wild card who could help to restore Avadon to its former glory or undermine it from within.

Avadon 2: The Corruption Trailer Brings Back Infinity Engine Memories

Spiderweb Software have released a new trailer for Avadon 2: The Corruption, their upcoming retro-styled RPG due out in Autumn. Players will attempt to rebuild Avadon Fortress after its attacked, deciding whether to go back to the old ways or create a new world as they do so. Expect text-heavy dialogue and tactical combat.

Be in no doubt: this will almost certainly be excellent. We awarded Spiderweb's latest project 8/10 in our Avernum: Escape From The Pit review, and it's just one of many.

GamersGate has slashed the prices of Jeff Vogel's sensational indie RPGs by 50% meaning that there's rarely been a better time to get involved with this nostalgic yet fresh collection of fantastic titles. Infinity Engine fans will be in their element here.

As an example of the quality on offer, I'd direct you to our 8/10 Avernum: Escape From The Pit review, wherein I stated that "the sensational quality of its writing and world-building results in a thoroughly worthwhile experience." That said, the standout bargain here is probably Avadon: The Black Fortress, which is on sale for a measly £2.98 and deserves your immediate attention.

You'll get both PC and Mac versions.

Developer: Spiderweb Software

Do you remember the days when RPGs didn't rely on flashy engines and hype campaigns? When they overcame their graphical limitations and lack of voice acting with exceptional storytelling and dialogue; making every word, conversation and description count for something? When combat revolved around cerebral tactics and planning rather than third person swordplay?

We remember... and so does Spiderweb Software. Jeff Vogel's Exile series released back in the late 1980s, and after spending the next two decades remaking them (and bringing us the superb Avadon: The Black Fortress), this indie pioneer has combined the first three Avernum titles into a single package.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit harks back to the Infinity Engine days; an isometric RPG powered by story, exploration and imagination. We're home.

Wow, this is some serious value. Avadon: The Black Fortress is a truly enormous game and provided a meaty experience at its original £25 price tag... meaning that £2.98 is an absolute steal as well as a major saving. Note that a few of its mechanics are a little rough around the edges, but a brilliant storyline and great combat will make RPG fans weak at the knees. Well worth checking out.
