The Next Great Starship Competition Announced For Star Citizen
Contest, New UK Studio, & Others Reveals At CitizenCon

During the early hours of the morning, the folks at Cloud Imperium Games announced a contest for budding modders and designers to create their own starship for upcoming space sim Star Citizen. Done in the guise of a "reality show contest" (think X Factor, but with less annoying sob stories and more awesome spaceships) those that take part  will be in with a chance of winning a variety of prizes as well as getting their creation added to the virtual 'verse - but the main prize of $30,000 is a nice added bonus.

Roberts: Star Citizen Was Always Going To Be A Million Game

Roberts On Escaping Outside Pressure, & What Could Have Been

Last night, the crowd-funding effort for upcoming space sim Star Citizen hit the $20,000,000 milestone, further smashing all records for crowd-funded projects, but it turns out that regardless of the success of the crowd funding campaign and generosity of the community, Star Citizen was always designed to be a game with the scope we see today.

Speaking to Dealspwn at this year’s Gamescom, Chris Roberts explained that while the community have helped to ensure the game’s freedom from private investors and publishers, it was always going to be a triple-A game in terms of its budget. Hit the jump to see what Roberts had to say, and to learn about the “What If” scenario that will never have to be.

Star Citizen Unveil The Aurora Vessel

Last Minute Pledges Now Available, Final Stretch Goals Announced

There have been some interesting tidbits of information to spring from the developers at Cloud Imperium over the last few months, but yesterday saw the long-awaited reveal for the Aurora spacecraft – the basic spacefaring vessel newcomers will be flying when they enter the online world of Star Citizen. In addition, the folks over at Roberts Space Industries have begun a final week-long sale for the newly revealed ship, with a number of options available depending on how players wish to proceed, but this will be the final opportunity to buy a ship with lifetime insurance (ie. players won’t run the risk of losing it without buying insurance using in-game credits.) The reason behind the sale is to entice the 40,000 registered users on the official website who have yet to pledge any money. We have more details, including an update on the studio’s most recent developments, after the jump.

Star Citizen Doubles Crowd Funding Total To Million

Big Plans Ahead For The Final 48 Hours

It’s not quite the highest crowd-funded gaming project yet, but developers Cloud Imperium are so very, very close at this point. In the early hours of this morning, it was announced that the grand total for upcoming space combat sim Star Citizen had broken through the $4 million mark ahead of schedule, and at the time of writing currently stands at $4,102,672. This means that a plethora of new features have been unlocked, including a more missions for the single-player portion Squadron 42 (now up to a total of 45), a new spaceship to fly in the persistent online universe, a professional mod toolkit for players to use for free, and the promise of monthly webcasts to update the community.

It’s been a hell of ride, so I guess it’s time put on the breaks, celebrate the success of the campaign, and then get to work? Not if Chris Roberts and his team have anything to say about it…

Frankly, even if you haven't, watch it again! We chat about our love of space sims, discuss the extensive opportunities presented by Star Citizen's ambitious concept, and dream of freelancing across the stars.

Elsewhere, we try and assess whether or not Gordon Freeman really is "creepy as hell", we briefly look at the Windows 8 Store's restrictive 18+ rating policy, and Jon's arm falls off.

‘Star Citizen’ Announced As Chris Roberts’ New Project

After weeks of anticipation, Chris Roberts has finally unveiled his next project, titled Star Citizen. Although it will be a Space Combat game at its core, the entire experience at a whole has a lot more than meets the eye, including a persistent online universe for players to traverse as well as a traditional Single Player campaign called Squadron 42.

Developed by Roberts’ new company Cloud Imperium, Star Citizen aims to push current PC hardware to its limits with huge amounts of detail, allowing players to pilot fighters and capital ships, as well as walk around them in either first or third person. Also announced was that the game would be doing its own crowd-funding initiative for the community to get involved in, which can be accessed by heading over to the Roberts Space Industries website.

We’ll have a round-up of all the information from today’s reveal coming soon, but in the meantime you can put some screenshots in your face, which have been confirmed as in-game, after the jump.
