It's a little bit more serious than you might remember it, and there's not enough Run-DMC for our liking, but SSX is still a hell of a lot of fun, and busting some sweet moves on the piste is just as exhilarating as ever.

Thanks for the tip BTL.

Game of the Year Awards 2012 | Best Sports Game

EA came out of the blocks very strongly this year, with cracking iterations of Madden, NHL, and FIFA, with the latter impressing us greatly with its brave gameplay tweaks and comprehensive content offering. They were still hammered off of the park completely when it came to basketball, though, cancelling a game this year in the face of sheer dominance once again from 2K. Elsewhere, Sports Interactive and Konami's PES Team had good years too, though for different reasons...

FIFA 13

If Konami got everything right on the pitch this year, EA Canada got everything bang on elsewhere. The presentation was, once again, spot on (though still not quite NBA 2K standard), the sheer wealth of offline and online game modes meant we were never short of playing options, and further social integration and regular EASFC challenges meant there was always weekly content to keep us engaged. The on-pitch tweaks made it a better prospect than last year's effort too. Fearsome in its breadth and depth, the lack of control might have proved offputting for some, but for others FIFA 13 delivered the ultimate footballing content package this year.

Football Manager 2013

Sports Interactive got fed up with folks saying that the FM series was a little too impenetrable for some...so they released two games for the price of one. On one hand you had the full fat FM2013 experience, which gave us a simulation experience with (somehow) even greater depth than ever before. But then there was Classic Mode, stripped back and harking back to the glory days of Championship Manager. With new multiplayer components and challenges infueced by the mobile game's success, SI delivered the most comprehensive FM package we'd ever seen.

Game of the Year Awards 2012 | Best Sports Game

NBA 2K13

Let's get this out of the way right now: the NBA 2K franchise has consistently delivered the best sports games for years. But it's easy to get a bit complacent when you get things right so early on. NBA 2K13 once again delivered the finest career mode you'll find in the genre, but it was somewhat undersupported elsewhere. On the one hand it was utterly triumphant, but those laurels were beginning to look well worn this year.

Game of the Year Awards 2012 | Best Sports Game

PES 2013

Slick menus, effortless matchmaking, and all of the official licenses in the world don't make a difference without exceptional gameplay, and thankfully PES 2013 had the last feature in spades. Even if it wasn't quite the full package yet, with a number of quirks still to iron out, PES 2013 was the finest PES title Konami had produced in years, with arguably the most satisfying footballing mechanics in terms of player control and unparalleled freedom that this generation had to offer.

Game of the Year Awards 2012 | Best Sports Game

Sports Champions 2

Sports Champions 2 gave us another reason to dust off our PS Moves this year, serving up another barrage of sporting minigames, much in the same manner as its predecessor. This sequel brought more polish, more modes, and more fun than its older sibling, though.

SSX

Even if it had lost some of the goofy charm that had endeared us to the series in the first place, SSX's return was still a cause for celebration. It needed more Run-DMC, but hitting the powder and bagging some ridiculously sick air was still as fun as ever, helped out by slaloming down some of the world's greatest peaks.

UK Games Charts | 17th March 2012

EA must be pretty chuffed with themselves right about now. The UK chart is dominated by their titles, with the newly-released FIFA Street managing to dribble and trick its way above Mass Effect 3 for the top spot. Colour us surprised, but with the furore surrounding BioWare's controversial ending, we wouldn't be surprised if a few potential buyers are holding off. Just to cement EA's victory, the critically-acclaimed SSX and FIFA 12 have secured 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Elsewhere, the same old faces are jostling for market position, and there's nothing particularly new to report save id Software's RAGE making a surprise recurrence. However, it's much more interesting to note that GAME aren't stocking four of the top five titles, which is a worrying suggestion that the retailer may not be as important to UK retail as many currently believe.

As always, we've got the full chart below, and a FIFA Street review in the pipeline.

UK Games Charts | 10th March 2012

No surprises here. Mass Effect 3 has rocketed straight to the top of the UK charts after three days of trading, with EA confirming that it outsold both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2's launch weeks combined. Though figures aren't forthcoming from GFK, we're reliably informed that it's this year's biggest release thus far (though, of course, this should be fairly obvious). We've ploughed an entire weekend into getting it finished, and Matt's full review is in the pipeline. Hackett out.

EA continue their chart success with SSX, which has secured second place after topping the hit list last week. Reviews and player feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and it represents a true return to greatness for the venerable series. Crossover brawler Street Fighter X Tekken has also entered the chart at 3rd place.

Elsewhere, the usual suspects are jostling for position - though Battlefield 3 has dropped from the Top Ten for the first time. Unit 13, the new Vita shooter from Zipper Interactive, has also just missed the top ten, weighing in at number 15. We've got a full review for your delectation.

As always, we've got the top ten after the break along with links to our reviews where applicable.

UK Games Charts | 3rd March 2012

Come tell it on the mountain: SSX has taken the top spot this week. EA's long-awaited snowboarding sequel has met with massive critical acclaim and sales success - a fitting reception for a beloved series.

Vita titles are still selling well after their second week on shelves, with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football charting well. However, FIFA 12 has gotten its golden boot in to retake second place, and Assassin's Creed Revelations has rocketed back into contention after unbelievably failing to chart last week.

Wii minigame collection Mario Party 9 has also weighed in with an impressive bronze medal, proving that Wii owners are still desperate for new games - and are a willing and profitable audience that Nintendo shouldn't be ignoring. This is especially impressive since GAME were unable to stock the title at launch.

We've got the full chart below along with links to our reviews... and enjoy it while you can, because we forsee a certain BioWare game doing rather well next week...

SSX Multiplayer Playable Without Online Pass

In-Game Credits Locked Instead

EA seems to be wildly experimenting with the Online Pass concept at the moment. While singleplayer-centric Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning plans to lock off solo levels if you didn't buy new, SSX will let you play its online multiplayer even with a pre-owned copy. Rather than unlocking content, the online pass will instead unlock in-game credits awarded for placing in the top three - which are stockpiled behind the scenes until you activate the code. It's an interesting idea that many players may find more palateable than past efforts, and we've got a full statement below.

Eddie Wachowski's SSX Trailer Does The Worm
If you decide to pre-order SSX, EA's controversial yet promising snowboarding sequel, you'll have access to series veteran Eddie Wachowski as a downloadable character. Chief amongst his abilities is being able to do The Worm... while hundreds of feet in the air... on a plank. Which is fine by us, frankly.

Eddie shows off his moves in the latest 'Defy Reality' SSX trailer after the break, and we've got a hands-on preview for your eager delectation. The game launches on March 2nd for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Zoe Profiled In New SSX Trailer

The latest in the drip-fed SSX profile trailers is redhead Zoe and although it's not quite as stuffed with Run-DMC as we'd like it to be (click here for the game's controversial Tricky remix) it's stil replete with some sweet jumps, awesome tricks, her signature uber and arcadey fun. We're looking forward to this one, even if they have scaled back the crazy a wee bit, and you can find out why in our SSX preview here.

Mac Fraser Returns In New SSX Trailer

Mac Fraser is one of the SSX series' veteran members, starting out as a wide-eyed youngster in the original game and gradually maturing (sort of) as the franchise progressed. He's back for another run at the world's most dangerous slopes in EA's upcoming reboot - and is eager to show off his sick skills in the latest "Uber Mondays" trailer. It's been too long since we've walked the dog.

Encouragingly, there's also no aggravating wub wub to ruin the ambience this time around. Just thrashing guitars. We like this immensely.

New SSX Trailer Brings Back The Run-DMC

There's something that's been missing from this new reboot of the SSX franchise and I think we all know what it is. That's right...old-school 80s hip-hop. Unfortunately, they've decided to try and ruin the rap classic with wub-wub, but it's still a pretty sweet trailer.

SSX 'Survive It' Trailer Pits You Against The Elements

Nine deadly descents, a barrage of freak natural disasters to run away from, SSX's 'Survive It' mode echoes exactly what the Bee-Gees were all about: stayin' alive. We've been privy to the Race It and Trick It modes so far, and now EA have dropped a trailer that shows off a few desperate dashes to try and outrun the elements.

And there's a sweet little bit involving a wingsuit.

Defy Reality With The New SSX Trailer

Morning folks! Today we're kicking off with a bunch of trailers, the first of which is a shiny new vid from EA Sports showing off some of the death-defying stunts you can pull off in the new snowboarding reboot SSX. Apparently, according to EA, 'Whether you're grinding on an abandoned power plant, or taking flight with the wing suit, you will defy reality in SSX.'

We're still a bit miffed that there's no sign of Run-DMC if we're being honest.

A whole host of SSX multiplayer details were spilled at EA's Gamescom conference, including the fact that up to 100,000 players can compete at once in 'Global Events' that will be held at regular intervals and allow gamers to top worldwide leaderboards for ultimate bragging rights.  EA promise that SSX will 'revolutionise' online multiplayer gaming, doing away with lobbies and removing the need to schedule your game time.

SSX Hands-On Preview | Avalancha-aaaaaaaaa!

It's been eight years since SSX 3...eight years! I haven't backflipped off of a mountain to some seriously loud Run-DMC in over half a decade! Some would call this criminal - that a series so unashamedly over the top and ridiculously fun that EA had to create a whole new stable for games of its ilk (EA Sports BIG) should have simply vanished from our lives. Of course, there might have been a reason for that, as Tony Hawk found out; but even the Birdman really had very little on the original SSX and its legacy. a wacky and wonderful, tongue-in-cheek mini-franchise that was really all about sticking a middle digit up at hipster arcade titles and going for absolute broke.

At least that's how I remember it, and a quick fire up of SSX 3 reassures me of that too. So it's a little disappointing to report that the reboot I held in my hands out in LA felt a bit too, well, normal. But normal doesn't necessarily mean bad...

Find out what it does mean for the SSX reboot after the jump...
