Who wants in?

Game Buzz | Episode 48 - Steam Machines

This week Jon and I have a sleepy chat about Valve's big three announcements. We ask what SteamOS might mean for the industry, we look at the retail proposition of multiple Steam machines of varying specs and prices, and we reflect on the Steam controller and its owlish properties.

Game Buzz | Episode 48 - Steam Machines. Recorded 28th September, 2013.

NB. Due to recent server migration, we currently don't have access to the FTP so the YouTube embed is the only source for this week's podcast. We will, however be attempting to rectify this as soon as possible.

Valve Announces Range Of 'Steam Machines' Coming Next Year From Multiple Manufacturers

Very Limited Prototype Beta Kicks Off This Year

The timer has reached zero, revealing Valve's second major announcement of the week. Following the reveal of SteamOS on Monday, Valve has now confirmed that their operating system will power a number of living room 'Steam Machines' next year developed by several manufacturers, as opposed to a single official 'Steam Box.'

However, they also apparently plan to distribute beta prototypes to 300 deserving Steam users... at least, those who jump through a few hoops. We've got all the details after the break.

Naturally Valve's 'Steam Box' hardware will likely take full advantage of this freely-licensable operating system, and we'll find out more details in 48 hours. Until then, we've got all the SteamOS details below.

"Co-op? Over My Dead Body" | Josef Fares Talks Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Next-Gen, and Interfering Publishers

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is due for release across digital marketplaces later this Spring and, following our hands-on with the game (read our Brothers preview here), we sat down with the Swedish film-maker and game director Josef Fares to talk about making the transition from films to games, why he co-op would ruin his game, how publishers are holding the industry back, and why he's not a fan of the Ouya.

Josef Fares: I like your hair, man.

Matt Gardner (Dealspwn): Thanks very much. I liked your presentation.

Josef Fares: (Laughs) Thank you.

Dealspwn: You've had no small amount of success as a movie director, especially in Sweden. Why make the transition to games now?

Josef Fares: Because I have a strong passion for games. This is a dream come true for me. I try to play every game out there, I own every console; I'm a hardcore gamer. I really wanted to make a game some day, so this really is a dream come true for me – an opportunity I couldn't say no to. I'll make less money from doing this, but I don't care. This isn't about money, it's about following your passion.

And you know, I think I have something to contribute to gaming, if I get the chance to make further games, I mean.

COMMENT | Steam Box: The Revolution Will Be Televised

Well it finally happened. Those of us who've been sitting on the edge of our seats since Valve unveiled Big Picture Mode, waiting anxiously for some shred of affirmation that the company behind Steam might be making their own TV-oriented console of sorts, have finally got a reason to jump and shout and hug and cry and yammer excitedly before realising that this thing is still well over a year away.

The Steam Box is coming, and its arrival shall shake the games industry to its very core, toppling incumbents who thought themselves safe, leading the charge of indie developers to all-consuming victory, and sticking the finger up at conservative suits previously desperate to milk the consumer hordes dry and stand in the way of progress in the name of profits.

Maybe.

Valve Squashes 'Steam Box' Rumours

'We're A Long Way From Shipping Any Sort Of Hardware'

Compelling rumours about a potential Valve console - dubbed the Steam Box - have been doing the rounds of late, backed up by patents and testimony from a Valve employee who's been working on hardware for the company. However, Head Of Marketing Doug Lombardi has spoken out to squash the story, instead stating that the hardware is just a test box rather than a potential game changer.

RUMOUR: Valve Working On A Set Top Box Console?

'Steam Box' To Feature Core i7 CPU?

Gabe Newell recently said that Valve will 'sell hardware if they have to,' and The Verge reports that this could happen sooner than some might expect. According to (as always) anonymous sources, the Software juggernaut is currently developing a set top box console known as the "Steam Box," which contains a Core i7 processor, will allow for rival stores such as Origin to be installed and supports the recently announced Big Picture Mode. Future-proofing for biometric inputs will also be a core part of the design, which is something that Valve have been very passionate about in the past.

This is very much a rumour at present, but it's an interesting one nonetheless. More deets after the break.
