Was The Last Guardian the real star of the most explosive E3 yet?

Now that all the E3 2015 press conferences are finally over, I've been able to take a much-needed step back and reflect on the games that have really stood out. And The Last Guardian stands out in way that few others did.

While we had explosive blockbuster displays and epic reveals from the like of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Fallout 4, Halo 5, Doom and many more, nothing really formed an emotional bond as much as the reappearance (demo video below) of The Last Guardian. But why?

Here's a game that was first revealed at E3 in 2009 (development actually started in 2007) and has rarely been seen since. Coming from Gen Design, a studio made up of staff from the now apparently defunct Team Ico and the minds behind PlayStation 2 classics Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, fan attachment was immediate and has loyally stuck throughout the extensive hiatus. Over the years, the game entered development hell and continued to miss E3 presentations, despite fans crossing their fingers and toes for so many years.

Sony E3 2015 Press Conference Impressions | You won't believe what just happened

Microsoft had an impressive E3 presser today, but put simply, Sony just annihilated them. When covering E3, we try to collate our thoughts into greater detail during the duller parts of presentations. Sony had other ideas though and barely gave us chance to breathe during their impressive E3 2015 press conference. We're going to be rewatching trailers all day tomorrow. But let's try and pick out some key highlights as we wrap up this incredible long day of smashing E3 pressers with one of Sony's most mind-blowing performances in E3 history.

Sony E3 2015 Press Conference Impressions | You won't believe what just happened

We dared to dream, readers! And behold, The Last Guardian is indeed alive and well and coming to PS4 next year. Despite being missing for years, the incredible levels of heartfelt charm as we witness the bond between the young boy and Trico are warmer than ever. The thing is, Sony's show just went full-on mental after that. I actually thought I'd lost my mind from chugging coffee for the last 12 hours.

Sorry everyone, but we're ready to get excited about The Last Guardian again

For many, The Last Guardian was the reason they bought a PS3, so it's small wonder that Team ICO's long-delayed adventure has become the definition of vaporware. Undergoing development purgatory rather than development hell, Ueda was forced to freelance on its own game even as Sony continued to reassure us that The Last Guardian is still in development.

But cometh the hour cometh the game. E3 2015 is nearly upon us, and to be perfectly honest, Sony could really use it right about now.

The time is right. The stars are right. I can see the heartwarming griffon creature who will almost certainly die at the end but leave an egg behind so clearly now. I'm so sorry, everyone, but we're about to get excited for The Last Guardian again and there's a good chance that we're about to dash your hopes for the umpeenth time. Vaas has a thing or two to say about it, actually. So does Tinny Tim. But this time we have a little more to go on.

Ueda "Terribly Sorry" For The Last Guardian's Delay - Will It Eventually Release On PS4?

And Are We Actually Still Excited About It?

Breaking news: The Last Guardian still hasn't released yet. Team ICO's anticipated title was announced back in 2009, promising all manner of heartbreaking adventure before being heartbreakingly delayed for what feels like an eternity. Fumito Ueda is "terribly sorry" for making fans wait so long, and has explained why he decided to become a freelance contractor on his own game - plus warning us against the fleeting motivation boosts of "hobbies and alcohol."

Following some interesting comments from Sony a few days ago, we have to wonder whether The Last Guardian is now being repurposed as a PS4 title. And, perhaps, whether our excitement has turned to apathy over these last few years.

Gravity Rush 2 Confirmed, But at The Last Guardian's Cost?

A Gravity Rush 2 trailer has been spotted on the show floor at this week's Tokyo Game Show. Sony were not disclosing any further details at the time, but it's likely staff from their Sony Japan department are once again working on the cel-shaded floating action platformer.

Does this mean that resources are once again being drawn away from The Last Guardian as Sony recently confirmed that the development of other Sony Japan titles like Knack and Puppeteer had taken priority over the long-delayed title. It's something of a surprise to see Gravity Rush of all titles get a sequel greenlit ahead of completing The Last Guardian. It must have sold better than we thought in Japan.

Not that we're adverse to another crack at Gravity Rush. If they can calm down that camera, it may well prove to be the essential title the first game desperately wanted to be. More importantly, any chance of another Uncharted title on the Vita too Sony? Trailer after the break.

Ueda: Knack & Puppeteer Taking Priority Over The Last Guardian

The legendary Fumito Ueda has spoken out on The Last Guardian, which is still apparently being developed in "earnest." However, current guardians SCE Japan are apparently too busy on other projects to fully commit to the eternally-delayed exclusive.

The Last Guardian Appears On Official E3 Site - Are We Finally Getting An Announcement? [UPDATE: Probably Not]

Here we go again. Every year, every damn year, The Last Guardian is heavily tipped for an E3 reveal before our hopes are cruelly dashed to pieces.

This year, however, the perpetually-delayed Team ICO title has cropped up on the official E3 Insider website; promising screenshots and details once June 11th rolls around. It could be yet another heartbreaking tease, of course, but if you shut your eyes and wish real hard, sometimes dreams do come true... [NeoGAF]

Last we heard, the legendary designer Fumito Ueda was working on The Last Guardian as a freelance contractor. Will it now be a PS4 exclusive?

UPDATE: "The page on the ESA site is speculative I'm afraid," an SCEE representative told Eurogamer, meaning that this is probably just another hot mess. Excuse me while I repeatedly slam my head into my desk and slip into blissful unconsciousness.

Yoshida Cagey on 2013 Last Guardian Release

It's been over four years since The Last Guardian was first announced at E3 2009. It's been dogged with rumours of cancellations, complete media blackouts, studio departures, Ueda's mysterious job-hopping, and precious little to see or watch at all.

Oh, and apparently it might miss out on 2013 too.

The Last Guardian "Still Exists", Promises Sony

It was around this time last month that Shuhei Yoshida reminded people that The Last Guardian is still under development for the PS3, rather than a next-gen console. We'd hoped perhaps that the game might rear its head at TGS, but alas. Nonetheless, a Sony developer has confirmed that the game is still alive and kicking, even if it is proving a little more ambitious than first thought.

Sony: The Last Guardian Is Still Alive & Headed To PS3

"Technical Issues" Blamed For Delay

Hands up: who was worried when Sony let the trademark lapse for The Last Guardian? We won't judge you - in fact, we were bricking it for a while there. After the perpetually-delayed title suffering all manner of developmental setbacks, we wondered whether Sony were perhaps planning on delaying it into the next console generation.

Thankfully, Sony Worldwise Studios has now confirmed that The Last Guardian is still in development and slated to launch on PS3... but is taking so long because the team had to "re-do" some of their work.

The Last Guardian Trademark "Abandoned"

Keep Calm: This Doesn't Mean Cancelled

Slightly troubling news today, in that perpetually-delayed Ueda masterpiece The Last Guardian's trademark has hit the "Abandoned – No Statement Of Use Filed" status.

Before you start rending your garments in twain, it's important to remember that this doesn't mean that The Last Guardian has been cancelled. Indeed, it's "still in development." Sony could be rebranding the project, delaying it until the next console generation or perhaps even simply forgot to renew the paperwork.

Sony UK & US Pitching In To Develop The Last Guardian

"It's Playable"... But Still No Launch Date

The Last Guardian has endured a staggeringly torturous development cycle, recently exacerbated by Team ICO lead Fumito Ueda resigning and then working as a freelance contractor on his own game. However, it appears that other Sony studios from the UK and US are pitching in to finally ensure that The Last Guardian finally gets made... though no-one yet knows when that will happen. Ex-Last Guardian Producer Explains His Departure

"We Need A Masterpiece In Facebook - That's My Goal"

The Last Guardian isn't having the most festive of December months, what with producer Yoshifusa Hayama first jumping ship, shortly followed by director Fumito Ueda. A sorry state of affairs, but here at Dealspwn we all hope the rest of Team Ico can rally together and successfully ship the game next year. But why did both Hayama and Ueda abandon their team and project? Well, Hayama has been speaking to Eurogamer, and told the site he left Ico to create "a masterpiece in Facebook".

Well it had been rumoured, and Ueda's reiteration of commitment to The Last Guardian did little to allay the fears amongst the fanboys, but now it has at last been confirmed: Fumito Ueda is no longer a Sony employee, and will be completing his work on Team ICO's latest project as a freelancer.

Sony: Ueda 'Committed to Completing' Last Guardian

Good news! Team ICO boss Fumito Ueda is still "committed" to completing his work on The Last Gaurdian. We just don't quite know what else is going on.

Sony sent a statement in to IGN that said the following: "Ueda-san is in fact under contract, and is committed to completing his work on The Last Guardian." Everyone breathe a sigh of relief.

Of course, that doesn't tell us whether or not he's quite Team ICO and is simply finishing things up in a freelancing capacity. Things seem a little rocky over at Studio Japan, with The  Last Guardian's Executive Producer, Yoshifusa Hayima, leaving for casual outfit Bossa Studios earlier this week.

Last Guardian Exec Producer Quits For UK Social Gaming Studio

With a question mark still hovering over the head of designer Fumito Ueda, The Last Guardian fans might want to look away as news rolls in that one of the producers on the game has definitely stepped out, with executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama leaving Sony to join UK social game developer Bossa Studios as creative director.
