Game Buzz | Episode 71 - Rumble in the Crumble

This week on Game Buzz... We take a look at SOE's zombie survival game H1Z1, we chat about the recent Nintendo Direct and the upcoming Smash Bros. games for 3DS and Wii U, we have a bit of a natter about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and The Last of Us coming to PS4, and we get a bit flustered over custard.

I can't explain, it makes more sense when you hear it.

PS4: The Last of Us Remastered emerges accidentally, but will you buy it?

Sony accidentally let slip that The Last of Us Remastered is A Thing that's coming to PS4.

A banner advertisement for a revamped PS4 version of Naughty Dog's survival-horror epic appeared on the US Sony Entertainment Network website (via NeoGAF), boasting a $59.99 price tag.

It's got a nice Day 1 Digital release badge as well, from which we can infer that there'll be a physical version of the game too.

The Last Of Us: Left Behind Review | Friends Until The End

The Last Of Us: Left Behind Review | Friends Until The EndPlatform: PS3

Developer: Naughty Dog

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

As someone who enjoyed The Last Of Us (perhaps significantly more than our on-site review) I was both excited and rather nervous about Left Behind. After all, getting your money’s worth out of DLC has always been a hot topic here on Dealspwn, and buying season passes ahead of time has added further fuel to that fire (and is something we really, really suggest you do not do – wait for the content to be revealed and reviewed first to avoid disappointment.) Thankfully, Left Behind provides a delicate and engrossing look at Ellie’s life before she met Joel in an extra chapter that fans of The Last Of Us should absolutely get hold of.

With that rather stark and quite upfront endorsement, let’s explain why I feel that is the case. It should come as no surprise that the narrative aspects of The Last Of Us are as strong as ever in Left Behind, with the optional environmental interactions once again bringing a very human touch between the traversal and action sequences. This time around, the subject of lost innocence and growing up in a world gone to hell is the main focus, as Ellie’s relationship with her best friend Riley reaches a critical turning point. It should come of no surprise that the script is of a high standard, but it is the performances by Ashley Johnson and Yanni King that make each interaction between the two a highlight of the DLC.

Naughty Dog Considered Rebooting Jak & Daxter, Made The Last Of Us Instead

According to Naughty Dog's creative director, the studio actively considered rebooting the Jak & Daxter series after finishing Uncharted 2. However, their ideas ended up at odds with the original games, leading them to start working on an interesting little side project that turned into The Last Of Us.

The phrase "right decision" is bandied about a lot these days...

UK Games Charts | 28th September 2013

As much as we enjoy causing havoc in expansive crime sandboxes, us Brits do love our footy, as evidenced by FIFA 14 knocking Grand Theft Auto V off its pedestal this week. Though sales are down compared to last year's iteration, perhaps due to the next-gen transition, free Xbox One promotion and, erm, that Rockstar game, it's still selling strong and outpacing its markedly improved rival PES 2014.

GTA V sales have dropped 82% since last week, which may well be refreshed once Grand Theft Auto Online releases this week. In other news, Ubisoft are laughing with a couple of games in the top ten, while Disney Infinity, Minecraft, The Last Of Us and Diablo III continue to chart well.

The Last Of Us Gets Musical 'Alternate Ending'

Here's a little something to brighten up your Friday afternoon.

Happy studios make great games, and Naughty Dog seems to have had a blast developing The Last Of Us. Creative director Neil Druckman and the motion capture cast actually acted out the final act as an improvised musical for the merry hell of it, which they've now released onto the internet. There's several minutes of preamble, but it's well worth the wait.

CONTAINS EARTH-SHATTERING SPOILERS. DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVEN'T COMPLETED THE LAST OF US!

The Last Of Us DLC Plans Revealed, Starts With Abandoned Territory Multiplayer Map Pack

Singleplayer DLC Coming "December-January"

Naughty Dog has unveiled the first third of The Last Of Us' season pass DLC: somewhat predictably, a multiplayer map pack. They've also outlined their plans going forward, which include a singleplayer story expansion in the depths of winter, sandwiched between some more multiplayer content. Details below.

It's all change at the top this week. After reigning for a month, Saints Row IV is down to fourth as GTA V and PES 2013 swoop into town. Elsewhere, The Last of Us climbs twenty-two places up into third, and Aliens: Colonial Marines reaches an astonishing ninth place after languishing outside of the top forty for weeks.

Watch the Final The Last of Us Dev Diaries

Months after the release of The Last of Us, Naughty Dog have been providing us with interesting dev diaries, keeping awareness of the game high and indeed maintaining sales. The Last of Us is slipping down the charts now, but it's become one of the biggest sellers of the year so far along the way.

These final dev diaries could well tempt a purchase from any of you yet to pick up the game and may encourage current owners to play through it again. The first video talks about the characters of Joel and Ellie, giving them a bit of background. The second is a fascinating montage of concept art images detailing numerous changes for characters, environments and the infected. Both are spoiler free and well worth a watch. Hmm, can I squeeze in another playthrough before GTA V lands?

UK Games Charts | 27th July 2013

Nintendo, that company we've been ragging on for months, have three games in the top five this week a Pikmin 3 comes roaring into second place for the Wii U as Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition moves into first. Elsewhere, Naughty Dog's PS3 swansong, The Last of Us, relinquishes its summer stranglehold on the top spot and drops to third, the retail release of New Super Luigi U musters an appearance at #13 on the board, and LEGO Batman 2 sneaks back into the top ten.

That 3DS lovin' is still going strong this week, but Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is back up in second place, with The Last of Us yet again sitting pretty at the very top. Dynasty Warriors 8 makes a good début showing, coming in at #5, and Max Payne 3 jumps nearly twenty places back up into the top ten.

Half Time | Staff Picks - Best Games of 2013 So Far

2013 Half Time, Best Games of 2013 So Far, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, The Last Of Us, Tomb Raider

Hot damn, this year's had some fine titles already. It's a testament to the strength of the output over the last six months, that no two choices here are the same. Do stay tuned for our rundown of the top ten games of the year so far in our democratically-sourced list later in the week, but in the meantime, here are our personal shouts for the best games of the year thus far...

Jonathan -- Fire Emblem: Awakening

Half Time | Staff Picks - Best Games of 2013 So Far

The first half of 2013 has seen any number of great games hit home consoles and the PC, but for my money, the best game of 2013 released on the Nintendo 3DS. Fire Emblem: Awakening may not have the clout of BioShock Infinite or The Last Of Us, yet it delivers perhaps the most exquisite gaming experience of many a long year.

The tactics and tough decisions are as solid as you'd expect from the venerable series, but Awakening upped the ante with a tragic yet uplifting storyline and a cast of truly unforgettable characters. Over the course of the massive campaign, you'll laugh along with your newfound friends, shed a tear when they die in combat, and punch the air with delight as they fall in love right there on the battlefield. Dynamically. Through gameplay. Eventually, their offspring joins your army, building an emotional attachment that makes permanent deaths all the more difficult to bear. Sure, the strategy was top-notch, but the glorious happy highs and stomach-churning emotional lows made Fire Emblem Awakening something truly special and unique.

I will be very surprised if it doesn't become my overall game of the year all told once December rolls around. Your move, 2013.
