The Sims 3 £19.95 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

The Sims 3 £19.95 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

If you maybe wound up slipping and falling into a ravine whilst trekking through the Himalayas, whereupon you spent ten years being carefully nurtured back to health by mountain wolves and the odd yeti, you might have missed out on The Sims, Maxis’ take on the God game. This ’strategic real-life simulator’ lets you take command of a 3D walking avatar and puts the smallest details of their life into your hands. You tell them when to eat, sleep, drink, party, work, play and so on and so forth. The Sims essentially combines people watching with almighty puppeteering, and it’s absurdly engrossing.

You can snaffle a copy of the third instalment of the game, which features more of an emphasis on the neighbourhood experience, by heading on over to The Game Collection and buying one for £19.95, saving you around£5 on the nearest competitor over at Amazon.

The Sims 3 comes with a kind of Story Mode now, in which your neighbours will grow and progress through life autonomously alongside you rather than just milling around eternally. The old staples are there, of course; you can still build your dream house, throw parties for celebs, flirt with everyone under the sun, and have blurry pixellated sex with your neighbour’s wife, if you so choose.

The Sims themselves are a little bit different this time around, instead of Wants and Fears, your virtual puppet will now have Wishes, the fulfilling of which will make them incredibly happy and contribute to their Lifetime Happiness score, meaning you can buy rewards. Your Sims will actually go to work now too, rather than just disappearing into the ether for half a day, and there are bundles of new Opportunities, events that’ll boost your Sim’s life with money or skill points.

I learnt the hard way from The Sims 2 that, if you let it, it will suck away your life. There’s something wonderful about taking control of a virtual bright spark and steering them through this colourful representation of life. There’s the transference thing, sure, but there’s so much here to do, and so many different ways to do them. Just make sure you leave time for your actual social life too!

The Sims: Pet Stories £1.95 @ TheGameCollection [PC Games]

The Sims: Pet Stories £1.95 @ TheGameCollection [PC Games]With all of us obsessed by these bloody first person shooters where you run round airports massacring poor defenceless civilians or nuke entire cities in games like Mercenaries 2, there comes a point when you just feel oversaturated with all the killing. So, if like me, sometimes you need a break from all the carnage, why not try your hand at something a bit more laid back – like training some loveable household pets in The Sims Pet Stories?

Currently the game is going for just £1.95 from The Game Collection.

Alternatively, if you’re just not ready to give up the battle against international terrorism just yet, you could always get yourself a copy as an early Christmas present for the girlfriend and just pretend it cost way more than it did… Genius!

The Sims Pet Stories is very similar to Life Stories – actually the format is practically identical. Like Life Stories, Pet Stories has been designed to make very few demands from your PC which is a nice change given that, traditionally, the Sims games are some of the most notorious system hogs on the market aside from first person shooters. Even when using a system just below the minimum specifications, Pet Stories runs pretty much perfectly, and in terms of visuals, is almost identical to its insanely demanding predecessors.

There are basically two narrative paths to take throughout Pet Stories. You either play as Alice: a young woman who has just inherited her grandparent’s house and, to avoid eviction, must train her Dalmatian dog Sam to win a local dog show. Or Stephen: a bachelor whose life is turned upside down after he agrees to look after his cousin’s troublesome cat. Overall the game is enjoyable – not really worth its RRP – but an absolute steal at this price. The Sims: Pet Stories £1.95 @ TheGameCollection [PC Games]

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

This week, we have a guest review of Sims 3 World Adventures from Martha Mackay, who is going to tell us about the new expansion pack!

- Emma

Platforms: PC/Mac

Publisher: EA Games

Developer: The Sim Studio

The expansion is coming but is it worth spending your Christmas dosh on it?

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

Welcome to the jungle

Sims 3 had barely settled onto our PCs when EA announced the expansion pack, Sims 3 World Adventures, for November 17. This, I thought, was not cricket. The Sims franchise has been criticised for its devotion to milking fans of every precious cent by producing one bland expansion pack after another.

Often these expansions delivered little in the way of rich gameplay, they added only extra features that usually extended loading times into the ridiculous – you could literally sort your taxes while you waited. In short, they didn’t drive us crazy with joy and we all thought that many of the fixes and features should have just been shipped with the original game in the first place.

So it was with this cynicism and doubt that I approached  Sims 3 World. Its release date so soon after Sims 3, and right in time for Christmas, smacked more of “gimme your money” than “ooh, look what we’ve done now!”

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

Take a trip down the Nile and discover everything the recession won't let you do at the moment

I’m delighted to be wrong.

Yes, there are still the unbearably long loading times that come with this expansion but, I guess, some traditions should not be broken. There is something quite nostalgic about having the time to file your nails or make dinner while you wait for the screen to load.

In World Adventures your Sims can travel to three different exotic locations – France, China and Egypt. I did spend a few minutes wondering why they didn’t choose Britain and then realised that they probably didn’t have the energy to implement low cloud and rain into the game.

When you first start out, you don’t need to have played Sims 3 and own well rounded or developed characters in order to travel. You just pick up the phone, choose your destination and set off. Initially your journeys are limited to only three Sim days. You can extend this time only by building up visa points as you undertake and complete quests for locals. The more difficult the quest, the more visa points you’re likely to get.

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

The Great Wall of China. Er, yeah.

I must add that the game has undergone a rather dramatic change. The Sims, until now, have stayed absolutely true to the genre but this new expansion pack takes the game in an entirely new direction. EA have cleverly introduced the point and click adventure genre into the Sim gameplay and it’s been done with a lot of thought and attention to detail. No, you won’t get the truly epic puzzles and quests that you would with a dedicated adventure title, but there’s enough there to make it addictive and entertaining.

The amount of work that’s gone into creating tons of secret locations, hidden treasures and extras for all types and tastes of player is impressive. Not only that, but you’re looking at a concept that may set the tone for future Sim expansions and possibly even a completely remodelled concept for Sims 4 in the future.

Of course this is pure conjecture, but ultimately it’s an exciting departure from the bog-standard Have a Pet expansion.

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

Yes, you can turn your Sim into a mummy should you so desire

While your Sim is exploring different countries they can inspect tombs, learn new skills like martial arts or photography, form relationships and even, with hard work, buy a holiday home. It’s beautifully done in terms of engaging gameplay and rich detail but the quests themselves are somewhat tedious and uninspiring after a while.

To be fair, I’ve not yet gone to the end of the quest structure yet, so they may well become far more intense and the puzzles more challenging. I wouldn’t recommend that fans of the adventure genre gallop forth to buy the games as it’s likely they’ll be picking up their pitchforks after an hour or two, but Sims lovers should find this opens up their experience beautifully.

Ultimately it’s about enjoying taking your Sim out and about, discovering secret passageways and oodles of treasure while not having to worry about every facet of his or her micromanagement. You don’t have issues with your Sim’s bladder while you traipse through a tomb with no toilets, so there’s not that element of “explore a little, go back and pee, explore a little, go back and pee.” This came as a welcome relief as I must confess to feeling a little concerned as I approached my first tomb.

Sims 3 World Adventures Review: Travel, Treasure & Toilets

Why not take a nap in a dark and musty tomb. Indy did it.

While I thoroughly enjoy the Sims and have spent many happy hours playing the different incarnations, I have also found myself abandoning it when the micro-management got too irksome. Sims 2 was plagued with this issue, although not to the extent of the original, and it seems that Sims 3 has really addressed these issues enough to make the game more accessible to other gamers.

You still get your extra hair styles, furniture, clothes and skills (like photography and martial arts) that should enrich your gameplay when you return from your travels. There is a cooldown period between trips so you’re forced to spend some quality time back home.
In short I have to admit that this is a good expansion pack for Sims 3. It has some downfalls in the navigation and the occasional ridiculous stereotype but the introduction of an entirely new Sim gameplay model is impressive and bodes well for future expansions.

The Sims 3 £22.98 @ 365Games [PC Game]

The Sims 3 £22.98 @ 365Games [PC Game]

Go beyond the realm of your self-built home and explore the entire neighbourhood, in The Sims 3, available from 365Games for just £22.98!

According to a price-comparison, 365Games’ offer for The Sims 3 is the cheapest around, with a five-pound saving! It’s an excellent deal considering the game was only released a few months ago. Sims is a lucrative brand for EA, so successful in fact, an entire team was built for the sole purpose of developing more games. The Sims 3 averaged 86/100 on MetaCritic, earning perfect scores from both GameShark and Cynamite.

The concept of Sims is well-known. You create a family of Sims, from father to son, and then choose either to house them in a predetermined home, or build one of your own. From here, you must manage your Sims hygiene, welfare and happiness. Each Sim is quirky, with a range of personality features shaping their interaction with other Sims. The Sims 3 £22.98 @ 365Games [PC Game]

It’s a successful basis, and the new developers wisely eschewed from tampering with it. It has, however, been refined and expanded upon. A ‘Story’ mode features, with Sims progressing from baby to child, and adult to elderly. The Sims are autonomous, and can find jobs, earn promotions, get married and eventually even die.

80GB PS3 Model Withdrawn From Retailer In Japan

From Call of Duty DS To PS3 Slim: News Roundup August 4th

Following the discontinuation of the 20GB, 40GB and 60GB models of the PS3 in Japan, the 80GB model looks set to be next. A notice from retailer 7-Eleven has stated pre-orders for the black, white and silver 80GB PS3 will stop this Sunday at 10am, citing “the manufacturer” as the reason. Yet more reason to suspect the inevitable PS3 Slim announcement, or at the very least the replacement of the 80GB model with the previously unreleased in Japan 160GB model.  [Kotaku]

My Sims Kingdom £9.99 @ Coolshop [DS Games]

My Sims Kingdom £9.99 @ Coolshop [DS Games]

Hardcore fans of the Sims series might want to check out this deal being offered by Coolshop. For £9.99 you can get your hands on MySims Kingdoms which is a great deal given that the next cheapest price will set you back £14.99.

However anyone who has only mild enthusiasm towards the Sims series may not find much to celebrate with this – as Gamespot describe it – ‘unremarkable sequel’. Although described by developers as ‘new’, the gameplay of MySims Kingdoms does not depart from its predecessor significantly enough to be called original.

In terms of story, things are initiated when you return home from some trip and discover that half of the town’s architecture has mysteriously vanished. The game becomes a quest to restore things back to their former glory and, as you would expect, sets in motion a variety of mini-games.

The mini-games are a lot of fun when you get into them, but initial progress is slow and consists of a confusing series of item collections. Things are made worse by the fact the game gives you very little direction to begin with, but things do improve when you get over this frustrating introduction.

In terms of controls these are very well adapted to DS and the controls, on the whole, allow the mini-games to be carried out with no significant problems. The player is even given a choice as to whether they want to play using the touch screen or the D-pad.

Graphically MySims Kingdoms remains as it has always been in the Sims series with no significant visual innovations. Overall, fans of the Sims will get some fun and entertainment out Kingdoms. However, according to the reviews, with next to no real innovation, this sequel is a bit of a let down.

The Sims Pets Stories £1.95 @ TheGameCollection [PC Game]

The Sims Pets Stories £1.95 @ TheGameCollection [PC Game]

For long-time Sims fans or animal-lovers in general, The Sims Pets Stories can be bought from TheGameCollection for only £1.95!

Sieved through a price-comparison, this deal for The Sims Pets Stories proved to be the cheapest on offer, and delivery is free in the UK, too! Unlike the original Sims, which enjoyed critical and commercial success, The Sims Pets Stories failed to impress most reviewers, averaging a 67/100 on MetaCritic, but appeased Games Master UK, who called it their “favourite expansion pack” for The Sims.

The Sims Pets Stories is an expansion pack for Pets 2, where instead of rearing Sims, you look after animals, altering their personality and lifestyle. Stories features a Story mode, where players compete in a Pet Show, using a variety of different animals along the way. Fans of the traditional Sims gameplay will appreciate the Classic mode, where players can create a Sim and their pet, build and design their home, and teach their animal residents tricks.
