Until Dawn Review - A night to remember

Horror games aren't usually meant to be 'fun' or known for being 'a laugh'. Scrambling around in the shadows for ammo in The Evil Within, or managing a tiny inventory in Resident Evil can be harrowing and stressful experiences. And then there's the nerve-shredding trauma of Bloodborne.

But what about horror movies? Beyond the blood and gore, we're waiting for inevitable scare lurking around the corner to make us jump out of our skins and then laugh it off with friends. Until Dawn is the gaming equivalent of that horror movie experience and it's been well worth the wait.

Until Dawn Review - A night to remember

Before horror cinema became obsessed with low-budget, haunted house, night-vision camcorder borefests and the gorno genre fetishised the violence with series like Paranormal Activity or Saw respectively, horror films were generally based around hapless teens fleeing supernatural forces or maniacs with machetes. Until Dawn is all about that teen slasher style and runs the genre's favourite tropes through a Heavy Rain filter with those all-important player choices affecting multiple lead characters who can die permanently. Supermassive's game borrows intelligently from other games and films, as even the scares you might predict still threaten to send you scurrying behind the sofa.

Grab a hot PS4 console bundle with Metal Gear Solid V, Until Dawn or Mad Max

If you're looking to jump into the world of PS4 gaming, these bundles are certainly worth a look. You can now get a PS4 console with either Until Dawn, Mad Max or Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for just £289.99. The deals are effectively giving you the game at half price compared to buying separately. Once you click through, scroll down to special offer 1 for the MGSV deal, number 4 for Mad Max or 5 for Until Dawn.

MGSV has been getting some great reviews so far and Carl will have our verdict soon. Expect my Until Dawn review very soon too, but I can tell you now, it's pretty damn good. I've just started Mad Max and it's a bit slow and is crushingly grey/brown, but I've not played enough to pass a fair judgement on the rest of it yet.

Until Dawn may be one of the best PS4 games of the year and thanks to today's voucher code, you can get a hefty discount off the Extended Edition. The next best deal for this version is £40.

My review of Until Dawn will be ready soon. I finished my first playthrough this morning and was seriously impressed. The teen horror movie vibe works wonderfully with the game and it's a lot of fun, especially when it makes you jump out of your skin. I'm going to replay it tonight, but with different choices so I can test out the different branching options and see how much of an impact they have. Stay tuned for more.

Pick up a PlayStation 4 console with Metal Gear Solid V or Until Dawn and one additional game for only £289

When we're discussing the pricing of a PlayStation 4 console, we generally want to be looking around the £250 mark for the solus, which is what currently makes this purchase a bargain. The supermarket's site is currently offering the PlayStation 4 plus two games from a great selection of either:

  • Until Dawn
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • Driveclub
  • The Order: 1886
  • God of War 3
  • The Last of Us: Remastered

Grab Until Dawn for only £33.99 on the Playstation 4

Graphically-speaking, Until Dawn is already looking gorgeous, especially when it comes to facial expressions and character models. We'll need to genuinely care about the cast in order to want to keep replaying the campaign, so it's very much a case of graphics serving gameplay as opposed to meaningless technical one-upmanship. A breezy preview is nowhere enough hands-on time to make a value judgement, but it is enough to know that Until Dawn is headed down an interesting track. We love the idea of its branching narrative and eminently replayable structure, but whether it actually delivers is another matter entirely. - PREVIEW | Until Dawn lets you choose who dies

Granted, it's a bundle copy, but £33.99 for a game released yesterday is definitely a must have, assuming bundle copies don't bother you so much.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Dealspwn review of Until Dawn coming soon.

Until Dawn: Extended Edition £39.85 on PS4

Despite being a brand new product, there's already an Extended Edition of Until Dawn. On the plus side, this retailer's price is even cheaper than the best deal we can find for the standard edition, making this the clear choice for horror movie fans wanting to see how Sony's long-awaited game holds up.

Until Dawn has been coming for years. Originally a PS3 Move title, the game has ditched the motion controller for DualShock 4 support on the PS4. It's looking like a lot of fun too and early reviews have been largely positive. This spin on the slasher horror movie has a bunch of teens trying to escape a masked murderer in what looks like Scream meets Heavy Rain. It's a bit of a quick-time-event fest, but with choices leading to possible perma-deaths of characters, replay value could be high. Want to know more? Then check out Jon's Until Dawn hands-on preview and keep an eye out for our full review whenever my postman gets his act together.

Watch 9 minutes gameplay footage of Until Dawn

Originally intended for the Playstation 3, Until Dawn finally makes it's Playstation 4 release on 28th August with its 90's chick flick horror-esque approach. On the anniversary of their friends disappearance, Ashley, Chris, Emily, Jessica, Josh, Matt, Mike, and Sam spend the night in a log cabin, unaware they are being hunted by a serial killer (honestly, why would you?).

You can check out the 9 minutes of gameplay footage below...

Jon previewed Until Dawn for us last August after getting his hands on the game for a 45 minute gameplay session at Gamescon, after which telling us:

"Until Dawn is a very different kind of horror game, in that it's halfway between a choose-your-own-adventure novel, David Cage cinematic QTE-fest and a Saw film. A good Saw film, if you can imagine that.

PREVIEW | Until Dawn lets you choose who dies

Until Dawn is a very different kind of horror game, in that it's halfway between a choose-your-own-adventure novel, David Cage cinematic QTE-fest and a Saw film. A good Saw film, if you can imagine that.

Having played it for the best part of 45 minutes at Gamescom, however, I was initially reminded of a cheesy slasher flick. A group of eight attractive twenty-somethings decide to take their holiday in a sprawling old house in the middle of an icy forest. It's spacious, comfortable and the perfect location for a getaway, at least it would be were it not for the masked psychopath hell-bent on murdering everyone. As such, you'll leapfrog between the perspectives of the terrorised tourists as they desperately try to survive the night. Who will live? Who will die?

That, dear reader, is entirely up to you. Until Dawn promises one of the most wildly-branching narratives in videogame history; boasting over a thousand different directions for the story to diverge and more than one hundred endings. Everybody can die, but depending on the decisions you make, you might be able to save a few before the credits roll. Followed by several more playthroughs with totally different results.
