Price ComparisonReview

I got a massive kick out of Saints Row IV thanks to its focus on giving you ridiculous superpowers, outlandish weapons, and setting you in a homage-toting version of the Matrix. It's a whole bunch of fun, and it's on sale over at the Humble Store for the next seven hours.

Saints Row IV Review | Superpowered Sandbox

Platforms: PCPS3 Xbox 360 (reviewed)

Developers: Volition Inc.

Publishers: Deep Silver

The 3rd Street Saints are much more than a bunch of purple-flecked gangbangers these days. In fact, they're running the country, and you, as the Boss, now answer to the name of Mr. President. There are a bunch of familiar faces in your Cabinet -- Keith David is your VP (now playing himself rather than the duplicitous Julius), Kinzie is your Press Secretary, Shaundi is heading up the Secret Service, and Benjamin "muthaf***ing" King is now your Chief of Staff.

And they all get kidnapped by aliens.

If you thought Saints Row: The Third went a little over the top, look away now. Saints Row IV goes bigger, better, and more batshit crazy than ever before. The Earth gets invaded by a race called the Zin, a bunch of extraterrestrials who resemble what the offspring of Mortal Kombat's Baraka and Goro might look like if they ever got it on. Their leader -- Zinyak -- is an egomaniacal Brit (to hear him speak), who finds himself amused at the Saints' tenacity, and isn't adverse to throwing verses of Shakespeare at you whilst bombarding you with waves of goons to demonstrate his superior strength and intellect.

The Zin enslave the human race, beaming them up to God knows where, and incarcerating key humans, such as the President, in individual virtual prisons, not unlike the Matrix. And much like the narrative in the Wachowski brothers' sci-fi opus, the game involves you breaking down the virtual code from  the inside, exploiting glitches and corrupting the code of your own simulated dungeon, and gradually turning the red of the Zin into the purple of the Saints.

Dealspwn Playthrough is back, and today we're taking a look at Saints Row IV, the upcoming bundle of open-world insanity from Volition and Deep Silver that sees you play as POTUS with superpowers, attempting to thwart an alien invasion by a race called the Xin.

You can catch the first half hour of the game in our Opening Scenes video, but today we're showing a little bit of footage from the first few hours in which Matt lays the smackdown on a Xin flashpoint before using his superpowers to scale an alien tower in search of sweet XP and Cache credits.

The Sunday Seven: Why You'll Enjoy Saints Row IV More Than GTA V

The Sunday Seven: Why You'll Enjoy Saints Row IV More Than GTA V

We’ve been looking forwards to Saints Row IV ever since Deep Silver surprised us all with its announcement earlier this year. Yet much of its hard-earned limelight has been stolen by Rockstar’s upcoming GTA V. Rockstar release a few screenshots, one gameplay trailer and the world goes nuts, despite the press not even being allowed to touch it. Same old story, same old Rockstar.

Well, balls to them. Less than a month before GTA lands, one of the worst gaming droughts we’ve seen ends with numerous big hitters and none of them look half as entertaining as Saints Row IV. Here at Dealspwn we’ve had plenty of updates, trailers, interviews and hands-on sessions and it’s time to tell you why you’ll be having more fun with the dudes in purple.

The Sunday Seven: Why You'll Enjoy Saints Row IV More Than GTA V

You're not as grown up as you think you are

It's crude, rude, and lewd and you'll enjoy it all despite knowing better. Sure, we have games that try to be funny and just come out as embarrassing (hello Lollipop Chainsaw and Deadpool) but SR games have consistently amused with humorous missions and characters you'd never be able to call boring.

Unlike the competition, Saints Row has always allowed you to create the game’s leading star so there are no complaints about how they look or sound. Get under their skin and they still manage to have a fun personality thanks to a decent range of voices to choose from and a tongue-in-cheek script.

Rockstar tried to use Niko, Roman and it's collection of racial stereotypes to tell an interesting story in GTA IV, but amidst all the dull friend missions, overcooked accents and never-ending escort jobs, they proved to be a collection of unlikable, tediously miserable bastards. Whereas here we have a street gangster who became so popular they went from the crack house, to the whorehouse to the White House despite a seedy obsession for all things purple and gangsta.

What was the point of Rockstar trying to make Niko out to be this wounded soul, haunted by his past in Eastern Europe when most players were going to make him run down pedestrians, shoot pigeons and kill all of the prostitutes in Liberty City with molotovs before robbing their still flaming purses? Yeah Rockstar, a kill/forgive choice at the end was really deep after what we'd put the poor fucker through.

Opening Scenes | Saints Row IV Gameplay – First 25 Mins

Saints Row IV is in the house. Brendan is preparing a Sunday Seven for later that highlights just why Volition and Deep Silver's open-world playpen of insanity will rock your world later this month, but in the meantime why not check out the game's opening scenes in this new video.

There are spoilers, you understand, but if you're on the fence and somehow still not sure of what to expect at this point from Saints Row IV, put it in your face.

We'd also assume that if Keith David was our friend (how we wish it were so), he'd tell you to watch this. So you should. Because Keith David told you to.*

Saints Row IV Dev Diary: What Happens In Space...

What happens in space definitely doesn't stay in space, at least according to this new developer diary for Saints Row IV. Senior producer Jim Boone, creative director Steve Jaros and lighting lead Chris Claflin get together for a lighthearted chat about the new virtual Steelport setting, that lets them play with reality in suitably silly ways.

Saints Row IV is out this month on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 - available in multiple editions including an insane $1,000,000 option. Check out our recent interview with producer Kate Nelson for the last word.

Volition: Saints Row 4 Will "Do Right By Our Previous Games"

"We Have Been Listening To Our Fans"

Volition associate producer Kate Nelson believes that vocal fans who didn't enjoy Saints Row III's direction will find themselves pleasantly surprised by Saints Row IV, which makes an earnest attempt to "do right by" the original games and take feedback into account.

Saints Row IV Interview | Producer Kate Nelson On Depth Behind The Dubstep

Saints Row IV is set to be big, bonkers and silly beyond words, which is fine by us. We've fired the black hole cannon. We've grilled Volition's design director. To get the final world on the next guilty pleasure, we sat down with Associate Producer Kate Nelson at a recent preview event to discuss Volition's overall vision for Saints Row IV, how it evolved from a DLC pack and whether it can please fans left disappointed by Saints Row: The Third.

Jonathan Lester (Dealspwn): Thanks for talking to us, Kate. I've just played through Saints Row IV's introduction, which lampoons practically every military shooter ever made. Would it be fair to say that you feel games are taking themselves too seriously these days?

Kate Nelson (Volition): [laughs] There's room for all types of genres or directions, I think. In a lot of ways, I would like to see some less serious games, but for now Saints Row has a really good place. We're in a really good spot, because we do like to inject humour into our games!

Saints Row IV Interview | Producer Kate Nelson On Depth Behind The Dubstep

Dealspwn: There's certainly plenty of laughs. So, we've come from the crack house to the oval office. And we have superpowers now. Was this escalation just natural progression for you guys?

Kate Nelson: We wanted to make sure to keep the momentum that we had in [Saints Row: The Third]. For a while we were thinking, “oh my gosh, how are we going to possibly top where we left off in Saints Row: The Third because of the over-the-top nature that it had and because you're a celebrity?” To use your words, the natural progression for us was, “okay, you're the President of the United States.” You'd think that would be the most interesting part of where Saints Row IV went, but we were like, “no! Alien abductions! No, wait, simulated world!”

We started pushing ourselves because we really liked the mechanics that superpowers brought, we really liked the gameplay we were getting there. It's so fun, and it did fit the universe, but we had to make sure that it's within an environment that still made sense logically. Like an alien abduction simulation.

Volition: Saints Row IV Will "Fill In Some Of The Gaps" Of Saints Row 3, Has A Stronger Storyline

"We're Trying To Do Right By Our Previous Games"

Keenly aware that some players felt that Saints Row: The Third suffered from the lack of a strong overarching storyline, Volition assure us that Saints Row IV will improve on its predecessor - even going so far as to fill in some of the plot holes. Fans of Johnny Gat will also be in for a treat, apparently.

Saints Row IV's 'Hail To The Chief' Trailer Gets Furry

Well this is terrifying. Deep Silver have dropped a teensy little trailer for Sants Row IV featuring a disturbingly sketchy-looking furry suit.

The publisher has declared that it's 'Hail to the Chief' week, so expect a few more little videos like this, showcasing some of the upcoming game's little quirks. This visual missive is exhibiting the Stomp ability, apparently, though we'd like it renamed the Cack-Your-Pants-At-The-Face-Of-Satan's-Cat ability, because that's pretty much what we did.

Saints Row IV launches on August 20th in the US and August 23rd everywhere else for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Saints Row IV Trailer: Gat Is Back

"I Need To Stretch My Legs And Kill Some Things"

Johnny Gat is set to return to Steelport in Saints Row IV next month, which will probably surprise absolutely no-one whatsoever. Since it's set in a virtual world, there probably won't even need to be a retcon.
