Batman: Arkham Origins Review | Lost In The Knight

Platforms: PC | PS3 | Xbox 360 (Tested) | Wii U

Developer: WB Games Montreal

Publisher: WB Games

Do you know what I’ve learned from Arkham Origins? That Batman used to be a complete jackass. Not one of those loveable gruff types whose acts of being  rough around the edges translate into a sort of cavalier coolness, but just a straight-up, actual jackass. Thankfully, by the end of the game he morphs into a more likeable person, but damn, there were points where I was routing for the bad guys.

But I’m rushing ahead of myself here, so let’s rewind a little bit. With Rocksteady Studios now done with the Arkham series, the developmental mantle now falls to WB Montreal – the team responsible for the Wii U’s Armored Edition of Arkham City. The port proved that they were capable caretakers of the franchise, but Origins would be the real test to see if they could continue the legacy of Rocksteady’s work moving forward. Unfortunately, the answer to whether they are up to the task is a difficult one to answer, because for everything they get right there are problems just waiting around the corner.

Batman: Arkham Origins Trailer Highlights Deathstroke Challenge Pack

Those of you who enjoy videos about pre-order bonus content (a niche crowd, but I'm sure you're out there) will be having a ball today, now that another game has shown off its incentive in a shiny new trailer. Batman: Arkham Origins will include the Deathstroke Challenge Pack if pre-ordered on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii U, which contains a playable Deathstroke character, two exclusive challenge maps and three unique Deathstroke character skins. Batman: Arkham Origins Interview | Eric Holmes On Stepping Into Rocksteady’s Shoes

Batman: Arkham Origins is shaping up very nicely indeed. The game will see Batman attempting to survive a murderous spot of bounty-stuffed devilry as Black Mask puts a $15 million price on the Dark Knight's head and invites a bunch of the world's finest assassin's to eliminate the Bat on a blizzard-stricken Christmas Eve.

Here's what we said in our Arkham Origins preview:

For fans of the series and of the character, it’s a tantalising prospect. We won’t be certain of the final game’s quality until it’s sitting in our hands, but it certainly looks like WB Montreal are on the right track, and if they can manage to pull together the dynamic, systemic elements together with this mouth-watering narrative proposition and character study through conflict, we’re in for a real treat.

I caught up with creative director, Eric Holmes, at Gamescom this year to have a bit of a chat about how Warner Bros. Montreal have gone about appropriating Rocksteady's award-winning legacy and taking it to the next level; why making a prequel might equate to a fascinating study of Batman's character as he finds himself challenged properly for the first time in his career, given the timeline; and what new elements the team are bringing to the open world, in a Gotham that hasn't quite figured out the Batman just yet.

The infamous conservative pessimism hit Warner Bros. Montreal square in the jaw when it was announced that Rocksteady would not be making the third game in the Arkham franchise of action-adventure Batman titles. The vocal despair was palpable, and only got worse with the announcements of prequel pretensions and the lack of Kevin Conroy as a titular character. The benefit of the doubt, it would seem, was nowhere to be found.

Still, after getting to grips with Arkham Origins at Gamescom this year, there's no way we're going to be missing out on this one later this year, and if you count yourself as a fan of Rocksteady's games thus far, we rather reckon you're going to want to check out what WB Montreal are bringing to the table.

Batman: Arkham Origins Preview | The Bombs, The Bounty, And The Bat

"It's been a huge responsibility to follow in Rocksteady's footsteps," acknowledged creative director Eric Holmes. "But I think that any trepidation we felt has really been overruled by our enthusiasm for the property. You won't find any bigger fans of those Arkham games than the guys on our team making this one."

There are parallels, certainly. The combat is largely unchanged, and that's a damn good thing. In fact, if anything, it feels a little more robust and impactful. There's a smidgen more crunch in the hits, a little more whomph in the sound of Batman's fists flying through the air in violent slow-motion. And he'll have plenty of fighting to do. It's Christmas Eve, there's a blizzard about, and the number one crime boss in Gotham -- Black Mask -- has put a $15 million bounty out on Batman's head. Given that there's some serious moolah up for grabs, eight of the deadliest assassins in the world have arrived in town, looking to take down the Bat.

Firefly Revealed for Batman: Arkham Origins

Good old Warner Bros. We wouldn't want any bad guy appearances to be a surprise for us in Batman: Arkham Origins now would we? So yes, WB are once again building up momentum for their new game by showcasing each of the assassin's hired to kill the Bat.

To be fair, this trailer only shows a few glimpses of the flame-throwing  jetpack enthusiast. Numerous villains make an appearance in this new video, along with a younger Jim Gordon, who's yet to earn his commissioner stripes.

Matt and Carl will be sneaking through the rafters of the Koelnmesse arena in Cologne and unleashing some smoke bombs to get their hands on the game over the next few days so we can finally see how the game is holding up without Rocksteady at the helm.

Copperhead Revealed For Batman: Arkham Origins

Lethal assassin Copperhead has been confirmed as a villain in Batman: Arkham Origins. Her sinuous movements and contortionist-inspired combat style apparently required several talented motion capture performers, including a Cirque Du Soleil acrobat. We've got a trailer below.

Batman: Arkham Origins launches on October 25th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows PC and Wii U. Handheld tie-in Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate will release simultaneously on 3DS and Vita.

Ah Balls! Panic Resumed - Conroy Involved In Arkham Game, But Won't Play Batman In Origins

Right.

Bugger.

We've made a bit of a mess of this one. Kevin Conroy is working on a Batman: Arkham [Something] game here. That much we know to be true.

But after inferring this morning, in a daze of wishful thinking, that Conroy would be returning to play the Caped Crusader after all, it turns out that he won't be voicing Batman in Arkham Origins. Sorry for the confusion!

New Batman: Arkham Origins Screenshots

Today's trailer might have been entirely CGI, but Warner Bros have also sent over some action-packed screenshots of Batman: Arkham Origins in action. The pre-Christmas Gotham setting makes for some atmospheric fights in the swirling snow (let us throw snowballs, please!), which will once again offer some brutal counters designed to simultaneously punish large groups of henchmen.

Batman: Arkham Origins releases in October, starring a younger and more reckless Caped Crusader. It's in development at Warner Bros. Montreal.

Batman: Arkham Origins Gets Full-Length CG Trailer

Warner Bros. Montreal have released our first proper look at Batman: Arkham Origins in a lengthy new trailer... wait, sorry, false alarm. It's all CGI.

Still, if last week's brief snippet of Batman fighting Deathstroke got you hot under your cowl, this extended version will probably make your day. Batman: Arkham Origins is out on October 25th, and Kevin Conroy has been confirmed as returning voice talent [though won't play Batman, by the sounds of it - Jonathan]. Deathstroke will be a playable character if you secure the pre-order DLC.

Deathstroke Will Be Playable In Batman: Arkham Origins

An early US pre-order banner has revealed that the villain Deathstroke will be playable in Batman: Arkham Origins, with the optional DLC costing around $10 according to Amazon US, but free if you pre-order.

We haven't found the deal tethered to a UK site as yet, but we'll keep an eye out.

There's a full trailer for the game due later today, and the game will release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii U worldwide on October 25th. [via GI]

Panic Over! Conroy Will Return As Batman In Arkham Origins

UPDATE: So, we were wrong.

In the immediate aftermath of GameInformer's reveal of Batman: Arkham Origins, it was widely reported that the role of Batman himself would be going to a new actor to reflect a younger Bruce Wayne in the WB Montreal-developed origins story.

However, Kevin Conroy, who played the role in both previous Arkham games, has confirmed that he will be returning to the role, speaking at a Dallas Comic-Con panel over the weekend. You can watch the entire video of the panel (the Arkham Origins stuff is right at the start) after the jump.

Ah, the circle of life. Game Informer announces exclusive reveal. Pics appear on AGB. Everyone goes crazy.

This time, the reveal in question is Batman: Arkham Origins, which has now been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. Interactive. Though I'm loathe to host the watermarked screenshots and artwork here for reasons of common decency, you can check them out through this link. Black Mask has been confirmed as the major antagonist this time, while pre-Penguin Oswald Cobblepot and Deathstroke will also make an appearance.

I've stashed the official line after the break, including all the PR quotes you could ever want.

Warner Bros. Montreal Hard At Work On DC Title

But It's Not A Movie Tie-In

Montreal is awash with new videogame outfits, popping up left, right and center it seems. The government support their burgeoning videogame scene with tax incentives and generous grants, so it's no surprise to see Warner Bros. Interactive opening their very own Montreal studio, too. And what with WB's ties to DC Comics - Warner Bros funds and distributes all the DC-licensed films, from Batman to Superman and Green Lantern - you'd be forgiven for thinking their new Montreal outfit has a superhero mandate. And you might just be right, but don't expect them to be working on tie-ins, however.
