Way Of The Samurai

Way Of The Samurai 3 tries to cater for those of you out there who love the noble Japanese warriors, unfortunately it's incredibly repetitive, which means that it's unlikely you'll want to play through it more than once, so you'll probably only get to see one of the twenty two endings. The Game Collection are parting with Xbox 360 copies of the game for £14.99, which is over £1.50 cheaper than the next best offers coming in from DVD.co.uk, Blah DVD, and 101cd.

Set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku Era, you take control of a lone samurai warrior with a choice to fight for the Fujimori Clan, Ouka Clan, or the villagers of Takatane who are caught in the power struggle between the rival clans.

You can grab a copy of the game for the PS3 or Xbox 360 from HMV for £17.99, which is almost £2 cheaper than ShopTo’s next best offer of £19.85. Considering the game came out just over a month ago, this is an exceptionally good deal.

There are a multitude of endings on offer to players depending on the actions you take throughout the course of the game. Unfortunately, in order to view them all you’ll have to play through an unbelievably repetitive series of actions, which at times make you doubt the legendary status of the samurai, I for one had never known about their rice cake making abilities. The RPG aspect of the game feels incredibly dated, for example the environment you’re given to explore feels very limited and the character customization is nowhere near as impressive as that seen in Mass Effect, Fallout 3, or even Oblivion.

Even more disappointing is the limited range of conversation responses, the poorly written floating speech bubbles above characters’ heads, and the poor in-game graphics. Combat is an attack, block, and parry set of affairs, which does require a certain amount of skill to master. However, the outcome does rely heavily on your weapons’ defence and attack rating. Luckily, they can be built out an amazing array of unique parts, which are strewn throughout the game.

If you’re a fan of the Samurai and this period of Japanese history, it's highly likely that you’ll be able to overlook the numerous flaws and lack of RPG refinement on offer, in which case this is definitely a deal for you. If you're on the fence, you might want to give Neil's cautionary review a read.

The year is 1560. Which, as any fule kno – cough, splutter – is the Sengoku Era, when Feudal Japan was in a violent political mess. Yeah, who says games can’t be educational?

Actually, that’s about it as far as the history lesson goes. It was, as that movie voiceover chap would have it, a time of war and that makes it a very good setting for this hack-and-slash title with a bit of a twist. You are an inexperienced Samurai. There are three factions battling for supremacy: the Fujimori Clan, the Ouka Clan and the villagers. Will you choose sides? Will you play one off against the others for your own gain and greed? Will you be a power of good through the land? Or will you be nasty and kill anyone who crosses your path? Your choices will determine what sort of game you have.
Only, of course, they won’t. Well not fully. For all the claims that Way of the Samurai is an “open world” game, with far-reaching decisions that will change your game, the AI for the billed “cause and effect” angle just isn’t quite up the level needed to make this a truly satisfying experience.

After an impressive start – a cut scene that wouldn’t look out of place in a Jet Li movie or, perhaps more likely, Season Two of Heroes – your Samurai (I called mine Daveymoto, because I’m such a wag) is in bad shape and is found by two passers-by. If you’re vaguely polite here, your Samurai will pass out and come round in a pretty little village called Takatane. If you’re aggressive and pull your sword – you regularly have a choice of flashing the blade or kneeling in submissive apology – you’ll make a startling recovery, terrify your potential rescuers and find yourself running through a gory battlefield... Either way, however, you pretty much end up in the same place: wandering around places trying to work out what the hell is going on.
