Xbox One Officially Revealed [UPDATE]

8-Core Processor, 8GB Of Memory, Out This Year

Microsoft has officially revealed their next-gen console as Xbox One, an "all-in-one entertainment system" slated for release before the end of the year. Their hefty black box ships with an upgraded Kinect sensor and revamped controller, while an in-built DVR captures game footage as you play. Television, sports, and Skype will play a key role alongside traditional gaming, which now seems to be just a small facet of what Microsoft plans to concentrate on over the next few years.

Oh, and as we'll be reporting soon, games will have to be installed to the hard drive, meaning that users have to pay a fee to play pre-owned games.

More details after the jump, and incoming by the wire.

Xbox Reveal BINGO | Play Along With Microsoft's Next-Gen Event

Given that 6pm might be a little too early for some to get totally smashed, and given that the US start time for Microsoft's next-gen reveal event is 10am PDT, we thought that we'd present you with something slightly less alcoholic for this evening's Xbox announcement.

If you do happen to be an interlashonal businessman, well you can just add shots into the mix for every box you tick off (DRINK RESPONSIBLY! - Ed.).

We've taken the liberty of producing an assortment of bingo cards for you, with each of the boxes representing something to look out for during Microsoft's Xbox presser. Here's a quick rundown of how to play:

  1. Print off a whole bunch of our Xbox Reveal Bingo Cards (see below).
  2. Invite some friends round to watch the show.
  3. Procure some sort of Grand Prize. Maybe cake. Or rum. Or a back-rub.
  4. Cross off the various PR stunts and reveals on the cards as they appear in the show.
  5. The first to achieve a straight line of five crosses in any direction wins.

We'll be playing along too, probably with scotch, so let us know in the liveblog how you get on.

Microsoft Apologises For Orth's "Always-On" Tweets

Microsoft have released a statement responding to "what was said yesterday", in reference to the tweets made by Microsoft Studios' creative director, Adam Orth.

Orth had expressed some surprise at the ongoing controversy surrounding always-online requirements for hardware.

"Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console,” Orth said on Twitter. “Every device now is ‘always on’. That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit.”

Microsoft have distanced themselves from the comments, whilst spectacularly failing to provide any clarity of their own.

Microsoft "Has Different Outlook" To Sony For Next-Gen

"Sony is really in to win this one"

Sony have already dealt an early hand in the battle for next-gen getting the jump on Microsoft with their February PS4 announcement and placing the emphasis fully on gamers and developers, showcasing hardcore gamer services (social, streaming, and more), and a refocused commitment to indie development.

The whispers coming out of GDC suggest that Microsoft has a very different outlook, and that Sony are pushing developer relationships decisively with an eye towards nothing less than "winning" the next console generation.

REPORT: Durango Will Require Always-On Internet and Kinect, Forced HDD Installs

"Play from the optical disc will not be supported."

Ready your pinched salt. Put on your scepticals. Prepare rain for the coming parade just in case. It's rumour mill time, and it's all about the next Xbox.

According to a fresh report that provides a look at some of the documentation for Durango's XDK, the new console for Microsoft will have always-on internet, an upgraded Kinect to watch your every move, and will force players to install each and every game they buy to the hard drive. However, a system is allegedly being designed to allow players to play the game as it is installing, minimising time spent looking at a progress bar.

RUMOUR: EA To Announce "Exclusivity Agreement" With Microsoft In April

We noted that it was a little strange to see Activision at the PS4 event a week ago, given that usually it's Microsoft who've been the beneficiary of their timed exclusives (certainly for Call of Duty) in the past. But times are changing and just as the PS4 will be getting some exclusive additional content for Destiny, it looks as if EA might be jumping into bed with Microsoft, and announcing their partnership at the rumoured Microsoft presser coming in April.

RUMOUR: Microsoft Prepping For Their Own Reveal This April

Sony's gamesmanship was cracking. First came Kaz Hirai, scoffing at the notion that Sony might be concerned with going first. Then came the news that Sony were readying a reveal for as early as February. Finally, on Wednesday, Sony lifted the lid on their plans for next gen.

For the story to be any good, Microsoft must now be scrabbling around furiously to cobble together some sort of a comeback in the hopes of not losing ground to their competitor ahead of conventions season.

The Thunderdome presents... CONSOLE WARS!! Raaaaaawwwwrrrrrr! Maybe.

RUMOUR: Xbox 720 Games "Will Ship With Activation Codes"

"Will have no value beyond the initial user"

It's rumour time, folks. That means dust off your berets of scepticism and grab some large swathes of salt. We've got some large dollops of source-based speculation coming in that point towards the next Xbox's games shipping with activation codes that will render any purchased games useless "beyond the initial user".

Hilariously, the report also suggests that Microsoft will fully capitulate when it comes to physical media, and start shipping their games on 50GB Blu-Ray discs.

RUMOUR: Xbox 720 To Simply Be 'Xbox', X-Surface Tablet On Its Way

UPDATE: The X-Surface report has been uncovered as a fake, with the 'source' revealing himself to be a hoaxer.

It would seem that Microsoft are prepping for something large. Instead of delivering a next-gen console called the Xbox 720 or Next-box, it looks like MS will be reverting to the simplest title of all and bringing all of their next-gen initiatives under one umbrella, with the home console hub at the heart of it: Xbox.

RUMOUR: Next Gen Consoles To Release For 0

There have been a number of juicy things to emerge from CES, and hear comes another little whisper from behind the closed doors of the show. We don't often cover the mutterings of analysts on this site, but this one seems worthy of discussion.

Having spent a good deal of time at the show "with a number of companies involved in video game development and distribution", Baird Equity Research suggested to potential investors that new console hardware, believed to be unveiled just ahead of E3 this year, will retail for $350-$400 in the US.

Rumour: Xbox 720 Could Be Delayed Due To "Painfully Low" Processor Quality

Oh boy. We've had plenty of Xbox 720 rumours to pick apart over the last few months, but this latest report is an absolute doozy. According to tech site SemiAccurate, Microsoft may be forced to delay their next-generation console due to "painfully low" processor yields in the manufacturing process.

That said, since the rumoured delay is technically for an unannounced console without a release date, I daresay that few people will lose sleep over this one yet.

Driver Creators: Tablets Will Overtake The Next Home Console Generation

Tablets Will Be 'Quicker, Easier and More Powerful'

Driver co-creators Martin and Gareth Edmondson believe that the next console generation will probably be the last, as tablets and smartphones overtake the PS4 and Xbox 720 in terms of practicality, convenience and horsepower. To combat this, Microsoft and Sony will have to "come up with some new innovations."

Microsoft Demands Censorship Of Leaked Xbox 720 'Roadmap' Document

So, It's Probably Legit?

Remember that Microsoft 'roadmap' document that leaked out at the beginning of the week? The one that reportedly spilled the beans on Kinect 2.0, a Blu-Ray Drive, Smartglass, augmented reality glasses and a £200 price tag? You know, the one that seemed too good to be true?

Well, a law firm retained by Microsoft has been demanding that sites remove the document from their servers, thus strongly suggesting that - at least at one stage - it belonged to the technology giant. They've even given it a name: the "IEB Roadmap."

Microsoft have issued a response following the "leak" of a 56-page document supposedly all about MS' next-gen plans, and it's typically non-committal.

In fact it doesn't even mention the document at all.
