XCOM: Enemy Within took an outstanding game in Enemy Unknown, and made it better. This standalone expansion is bigger, deeper, and more challenging than its impressive predecessor, forcing players to rethink their approaches, and delivering near endless replayability. Given how many weeks you'll lose to this game, paying just over a fiver for it seems like an absolute steal. Cheers Turkey!

Jon died last night. Just after reaching the rank of Lieutenant, both him and my good friend Seb got ambushed by a bunch of Thin Men and copped it. Soldier Me was back at base, nursing a grave injury after a run in with some particularly brutal Mechtoid, groaning in the infirmary with an equally bloodied and battered Carl. My girlfriend was the only one who made it out of that mission alive, largely thanks to a Hail Mary play that saw a fluke shot hit home, clearing a path to extraction. Jon and Seb and the sniper captain I'd named Starbuck weren't so lucky. Except it had nothing to do with luck, not really. I'd gotten them killed; I was the one who sent them running in too quickly after a time-sensitive resource. All those hours of careful progression and upgrading gone.

Welcome back, Commander. Everything you thought you knew has changed.

It's good to be sinking hours into XCOM again. Enemy Unknown was one of our favourite games of last year, and now, at a time when many are lamenting the absence of meaningful expansion packs like how they used to do, Firaxis have gone and dropped just such a big, fat expansion pack into the mix just in time for another run at Game of the Year.

Enemy Within presents the same outstanding turn-based strategy that you know and love, but with a host of additional maps, missions, customisation options, troops types, and enemies to face thrown into the equation. That might sound a little like a bit of a cop out, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's more like an outstanding director's cut -- a standalone package (on consoles, at least) that includes the original game, all of the DLC that's come out in the last year, as well as a host of new content. It's the gaming equivalent of those Lord of the Rings Extended Edition boxsets. And it's excellent.

Dealspwn Playthrough | XCOM: Enemy Within Gameplay - An Introduction to Meld

XCOM: Enemy Within is out later this week for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and the hefty expansion to last year's stunning XCOM: Enemy Unknown is bringing a host of new features along with it, including a mysterious resources named Meld.

We're not going to give too much away, here, but Meld basically turns XCOM into Mechs-COM. Or Genetics-COM... but that didn't roll off the tongue as nicely.

As you wait breathlessly for our XCOM: Enemy Within review, here's a little taster video showing off a couple of the Meld introductory missions. Expect another Dealspwn Playthrough featuring ridiculously amped-up cyborgs and recombined gene-stuffed commandos very soon as well.

XCOM: Enemy Within Interview | Lead Designer Ananda Gupta Unmasks The Exalt

XCOM: Enemy Within isn't just Us vs Them. Firaxis' massive expansion is set to introduce a brand new human enemy faction, Exalt, who wreak havoc around the globe unless you hunt them down and rip their shadowy organisation to pieces.

After successfully managing to defeat one of their cells in our hands-on preview, but taking two losses in the process, I sat down with lead designer Ananda Gupta for a lively chat about what Exalt bring to the XCOM storyline and gameplay experience.

XCOM: Enemy Within Interview | Lead Designer Ananda Gupta Unmasks The Exalt

Jonathan Lester (Dealspwn): We've finally met The Enemy Within: Exalt, the new human enemy faction. Can you tell us about them? What's their deal? What's their objective?

Ananda Gupta (Firaxis): Exalt is a paramilitary secret society. Their goal is to subvert, infiltrate and overthrow the council and to seize control of alien technology; to seize this power. In this way, they're opposed completely to XCOM.

Visually, they look kinda dapper. They could be anyone, they could be walking down the street next to you, be at your job, but when they get the call, they go to their secret compartment and - whoosh! Ready to go. They prefer to wage their campaign against XCOM not in the open, but from the shadows. They place covert cells around the globe that XCOM can hunt down using intelligence scans. They'll prepare operations to launch against XCOM; things like propaganda to increase panic, sabotage to go after your credit reserves and research hacks to go after your research.

XCOM: Enemy Within Designer Explains Standalone Console vs DLC PC Release

"Obviously We Don't Want Our Players To Have To Swap Discs"

XCOM: Enemy Within is going to be an absolutely whopping expansion that profoundly affects the campaign from beginning, middle to endgame. PC owners will be able to download it as DLC, but console players will have to purchase it as part of a brand new retail edition at extra cost. To explain why, we asked lead designer Ananda Gupta - and it effectively comes down to convenience and the enormous amount of content.

XCOM: Enemy Within Hands-On Preview | We Meet The REAL Enemy Within: Exalt

Platforms: PC (version tested) | PS3 | Xbox 360

Developer: Firaxis Games

Publisher: 2K Games

XCOM: Enemy Within is a clever title. It refers to the new dangerous cybernetic and genetic enhancements that augment yet corrupt your troops, and the invasive surgical operations you'll have to perform on your valuable soldiers to use the barely-tested shady technology.

However, it also refers to a brand new enemy faction, Exalt, a power-crazed secret society out to destroy XCOM from the shadows.

This new human threat strikes out against the Council through fear and manipulation, deploying cells throughout the world to spread panic and steal your funds. If left unchecked, they'll disrupt your research, raid your coffers and escalate panic ratings within your allied countries with vicious smear campaigns. They're a faceless, implacable and mysterious organisation who'll do anything to secure alien technology and see your fragile alliance crumble.

Will you stand for that, Commander? Of course you won't. There's only room for one faceless and implacable organisation on this planet. In between curtailing the extraterrestrial invasion, you'll hunt down Exalt cells, steal their intel and assault their base in a concerted effort to wipe out every last one of them. That said, these dapper operatives aren't going to make it easy for you, and fighting them is a completely new experience that will make XCOM: Enemy Within feel even more like a brand new game.

Firaxis Would Love To Work On New XCOM Sequel: It's A "Conversation Between Us And 2K"

Enemy Within Reception May Influence Future Games

XCOM: Enemy Within is looking seriously impressive ahead of its November launch, but lead designer Ananda Gupta would love to take on the strategy franchise again. Apparently it's down to Firaxis and 2K Games - and perhaps how well Enemy Within is received at retail.

XCOM: Enemy Within Interview | Garth DeAngelis Talks Mechs, Mods, and Morals

More XCOM? Yes please! Firaxis' fantastic strategy reboot was phenomenal last year, and now with XCOM: Enemy Within it looks as hough they've given us a whole host of reasons to slip that game back into the disc drive and leap back into the fray in the fight for Earth.

Only this time, there are mechs and genetically modified soldiers on both sides roaming the battlefields. Oh yes!

I sat down with producer Garth DeAngelis, who happily recognised e from the year before, and we had a bit of a chat about what Enemy Within will be bringing to the table and how Firaxis are expanding upon Enemy Unknown when it comes to gameplay decision-making, strategic depth, and the all-important balance between player choice and hefty consequences.

Hello, Commander. XCOM: Enemy Within will introduce some terrifying new alien units to Firaxis' exquisite strategy game when it releases in November, but a massively expanded arsenal is ready to wipe them off the planet. XCOM: Enemy Within Officially Announced, Is Expansion Pack

Firaxis have finally blown the lid off XCOM: Enemy Within, which has been revealed as a major expansion for last year's sensational XCOM: Enemy Unknown (my personal GOTY). Enemy Within promises a "massive amount of new content" including maps, enemies, abilities, weapons and gameplay elements when it releases on November 15th.

We'll also be able to construct a genetics lab to tinker with our operatives' DNA. And mechs. Get all the details below.
