Still "Heavily Invested" In The Franchise
Though dogged by PS3 online issues, Space Marine managed to carve out a modest niche for itself in the dense winter sales crunch. However, any hopes for a sequel are likely to be in vain. THQ boss Danny Bilson doesn't believe that there's "room" for another action game alongside the combat-oriented MMO Dark Millennium. Apparently Warhammer fans still have a lot to look forward to, though, as there's "more stuff coming in the 40K universe."
Speaking to Joystiq at a Saints Row: The Third preview event, Bilson was unwilling to entertain the notion of a Space Marine sequel since the development timeframe will bring it into direct competition with Dark Millennium Online. The Warhammer 40K MMO has recently been confirmed for a March 2013 release, which will include Space Marines as a playable faction.
We've already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play, and if you combine that it's very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I'm not sure there's room for Space Marine.
However, THQ's recently-signed multi-year deal with Games Workshop will allow them to continue creating games set in the 40K universe.
We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there's more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while.
To be honest, we're just glad that THQ are finally starting to drop some more hints about Dark Millennium Online. You can read Brendan's 6/10 Space Marine review here.
