The wait is nearly over. As promised last week, Titanfall is set to enter beta on Valentine's Day, allowing PC and Xbox One owners to sample Respawn's anticipated shooter ahead of its March release, regardless of whether you've got a pre-order or not. We know you're ready.
However, you'll need to register for a space on the official site before the festivities kick off. Go, go, go!
The Titanfall beta includes three game modes. Attrition tasks teams with destroying each other outright, while the aptly-named Last Titan Standing gives every player a Titan from the get-go... but no respawns. Finally, Hardpoint Domination should handle like a like a fast-paced take on traditional domination gameplay, with players bickering over three capture zones using agility, overwatch and great ruddy robots.
Respawn are keen to stress that the beta is only a "small slice" of what to expect from the finished article and that feedback will be used to further improve the game before launch (which is in a matter of weeks). We hope that they'll also seize the opportunity to conduct thorough stress testing, because the reputation of both EA, Microsoft and the Xbox One are riding on the launch. The chips are down, and Titanfall must deliver.
Interestingly, the FAQ reveals an interesting tidbit for Xbox One owners, in that every account on the system will gain access to the beta if successful.
Now for some busywork. As mentioned, you'll have to register for access before the beta begins, and will need an Origin account to get involved. You'll then be contacted before the beta closes on February 17th if successful with further details. There won't be an Xbox 360 beta.
Titanfall will attempt to blur the line between singleplayer campaigns and multiplayer action, offering story-driven matches with AI troops, epilogues and canonical context. Its mix of highly agile infantry combat with enormous game-changing mechs whipped us into a frenzy ever since Matt tried it out, and it summarily became our most anticipated game of 2014.
Are you prepared for Titanfall?
