Titanfall Beta begins this Friday, sign-ups now open

Go, Go, Go!

The wait is nearly over. As promised last week, Titanfall is set to enter beta on Valentine's Day, allowing PC and Xbox One owners to sample Respawn's anticipated shooter ahead of its March release, regardless of whether you've got a pre-order or not. We know you're ready.

However, you'll need to register for a space on the official site before the festivities kick off. Go, go, go!

The Titanfall beta includes three game modes. Attrition tasks teams with destroying each other outright, while the aptly-named Last Titan Standing gives every player a Titan from the get-go... but no respawns. Finally, Hardpoint Domination should handle like a like a fast-paced take on traditional domination gameplay, with players bickering over three capture zones using agility, overwatch and great ruddy robots.

Respawn are keen to stress that the beta is only a "small slice" of what to expect from the finished article and that feedback will be used to further improve the game before launch (which is in a matter of weeks). We hope that they'll also seize the opportunity to conduct thorough stress testing, because the reputation of both EA, Microsoft and the Xbox One are riding on the launch. The chips are down, and Titanfall must deliver.

Interestingly, the FAQ reveals an interesting tidbit for Xbox One owners, in that every account on the system will gain access to the beta if successful.

Now for some busywork. As mentioned, you'll have to register for access before the beta begins, and will need an Origin account to get involved. You'll then be contacted before the beta closes on February 17th if successful with further details. There won't be an Xbox 360 beta.

Titanfall will attempt to blur the line between singleplayer campaigns and multiplayer action, offering story-driven matches with AI troops, epilogues and canonical context. Its mix of highly agile infantry combat with enormous game-changing mechs whipped us into a frenzy ever since Matt tried it out, and it summarily became our most anticipated game of 2014.

Are you prepared for Titanfall?

I wonder how many Valentines Day's this is going to ruin?

Well, since all accounts can access it on Xbox One, perhaps it's the perfect basis for a cosy night in? :P Mind you, I have no idea if splitscreen will be supported.

@Jon - You sure know how to treat a girl, I hope she's getting the Collector's Edition Pack on release day!

Does releasing on Valentines Day say a lot about how EA, Microsoft and Respawn think of their core player base?

@X10: Sergeant Johnson taught me everything I need to know about Valentines Day. Armour plating, massive calibre HE shells and rolling treads are essential.

Looks like no more UK places available :(

Why do you say that, wightmad?
I've just checked and it seems fine.

Did you scroll to the bottom of the list? If so, that's where you went wrong. They've got the "bigger" countries A-Z at the top, and then the rest A-Z below those - so UK is actually quite near the top.

Thx Late.

I'd seen Australia, Austria, etc. - assumed it was alphabetical, and then gone straight to the bottom.

Thx for the advice :)

No probs. Gave me an excuse to register the wife's email addy. I'm sure she'll be overjoyed at the prospect. ;)

LOL :)

Please let us know how you get on Late.

I've heard nothing as yet, but live in hope :)

I see codes are being sold on ebay for around £35.
Damn but that's tempting!

GL mate. I believe they're sending codes out in batches, so there's definitely hope yet.

(In fact they might've screwed up the email code deliveries in some way - because I got one at 05.58 and another at 13.08, both to the same email addy. Both had identical codes. I hear I'm not the only one to get sent my code twice at those times.)

Managed to squeeze half an hour in early this evening. That allowed me to get through the tutorial, and play two games.
Early impressions are very good - I had a lot of fun.
The AI is pretty weak, though. Either that, or the AI units just don't have enough health/firepower to add anything to the game. Either way, you'll find you're racking up loads of kills - but you're not actually killing any players. Which is a little frustrating.
Aside from that, though, everything looked good. Running and jumping around are fluid and intuitive, not to mention bloody good fun; the game mode I played (basically Team Deathmatch) was fun; the maps seem very good - with a nice mixture of open space, close combat, and verticality; and the Titans themselves seem a lot of fun - though I need to get some more practice in them.

I'm unable to get back on it at the moment. It just says no servers available. Looks like it's a bug and they're looking into it - and have been doing so for over three hours now.
Such is life, on Betas.

FYI, codes are continually being dispatched, and will keep coming over the weekend. Respawn temporarily paused due to version mix-ups, but should be back on point soon.

Did everyone who applied for a code get one?

I've had four now. From three applications. (Actually I've had five, but two were identical codes).

Have given away two, got one spare. Will probably give that away on hukd.
